    Trazodone experience?

I've used antihistamines (mostly diphenhydramine aka benedryl, etc.) to help me sleep. I came across a study reported in the NYT that found that strong anticholinergic drugs--and diphenhydramine is a strong one--were correlated with cognitive decline and death in the elderly. More troubling, the effects seemed to be cumulative, i.e., the longer someone takes them, the greater the correlation. It provided a list of substitute medications for different conditions that have less anticholinergic activity.

Now to my point: it suggested trazodone as a hypnotic. From my online research of this drug, it seems to be relatively safe, and has even been studied as an aid to both acute and post-acute alcohol withdrawal (PAWS). Has anyone had any luck with this one?

I've tried baclofen two seperate times, and despite titrating up to 250 mg/day, it didn't seem to do the trick, and the high-dose side effects became too difficult to tolerate. Should I talk to my doc about trying trazodone as a sleep aid? Does it rapidly lose it effectiveness with frequent use like a lot of other sleep meds? Does it have any anti-craving properties? Any experiences would be appreciated?

    Trazodone experience?

    Hi, Bill.
I don't have any personal experience with Trazodone, but my sister has taken it for quite a long time, and it was prescribed by her doctor for sleep. She told me she doesn't feel groggy in the mornings. But when I was in rehab, the patients who couldn't sleep were given that and a few complained that they were very groggy in the morning. I think they cut back on the dosage and were better.
I'm sure there are people here who can provide more information than I can, so hang in there!

I did not have any luck with it. I felt like a zombie the next day since I never really slept and it was still in my system. It works for some I here. Be careful what you mix it with.

This may sound silly, but have you tried any sleep supplements? 3 x 450 mg valerian root, a 3mg melatonin, and 1000 mg tryptophan knock me out. Just sayin...
"Yet someday this will have an end
All choices made or choice resigned,
And in your face the literal eye
        Trace little of your history,
Nor ever piece the tale entire
Of villages that had to burn
And playgrounds of the will destroyed
Before you could be safe from time
And gather in your brow and air
        The stillness of antiquity."

Thanks for all the replies. WCL, I've tried copious amounts of valerian root extract and 5-HTP with no apparent effect. I haven't tried tryptophan yet. I take melatonin every night. It seems to help a little, because the nights I forget to take it, I end up tossing and turning. I guess I'm just looking for something to practically knock me out without making me groggy in the morning (and that isn't addictive). I've taken various SSRIs, but they only make me sleepy during the day, and don't help me sleep at night.

Bill, they work for me. I think the pill comes in 50/100/150. If you start out at 150 you will be groggy. I am on 150 now but have been taking them for years.

            Good luck.

When I was in rehab trazodone was the one thing people got in terms of non-life-necessary meds. I was jealous because those people slept really well. Hope it's a good option for you!

Hi Bill, I've had good luck with Trazadone. I usually take 100mg, as I wake up and can't get back to sleep with 50mg. There's a little morning grogginess, though I suspect it's the drinking, not the pill. When I don't drink much, I'm fine the next day.
