    Medication choices.

:new:Why one particular medication over another? Expense, ability to obain it?
I feel medication is my only chance. But don't know where to start. I will need it via online no prescription. I am not willing to see a medic for this issue.
Any thoughts as to why you made your choice will be helpful to me...... I hope, desperately I hope.....

    Medication choices.

Hi sujo and welcome, I take antabuse as this stops me drinking, because I know I cannot drink it stops all the arguing in my head about should I shouldnt I drink. I can not have a drink and literally full stop. Of course there are still times when I would like a drink but as time has gone on they are very few and I dont think about it for long. I definately dont dwell on it for hours or even days on end the way I used to when I was AF without it. Because I also have anxiety which nothing else has seemed to treat I take baclofen which pretty much deals with it.

Neither of these meds are expensive at the dose I take them and are a definate bargain considering what they have done for me.

As I said this is just me and others take different meds, or in different ways, read around the forum and you will be able to see them..

    Good luck

      Hi, Sujo.
I take baclofen. I took an awful lot of it to get all the way up to indifference. It worked for me.
It can be taken alone or in conjunction with other meds.

I couldn't stop, either, and had tried everything else, too. (At least it feels that way!) Rest assured that medication can and will help you. It's not a disease of the mind. It's a disease of the brain/body. In general, medication helps those illnesses much better than the alternatives, right?

Good luck and hang in there. It's worth the good fight.

of course youve had replies, and there is a lot of hope for you. I know for myself and I think Ne as well it becomes a pretty simple matter of taking the pill and you will will just start to get better, whichever med you choose it does work! it is working for me in spite of myself.

Welcome Sujo! My advice is to look into everything. Google every med, read as many threads as you can, look at online pharmacies, compare prices. Look at side effects for each med and determine what would interfere least with your daily life. If you find a thread where someone's had success, ask questions. I think most people around here are pretty nice. Ne is awesome about helping with high dose baclofen, Space and I and a few others take low dose baclofen with antabuse, topamax has its own thread, and there's a few TSM followers floating around too.
Best of luck! Glad you're here!

All choices made or choice resigned,
And in your face the literal eye
            Trace little of your history,
Nor ever piece the tale entire
Of villages that had to burn
And playgrounds of the will destroyed
Before you could be safe from time
And gather in your brow and air
            The stillness of antiquity."

              Medication choices.

Hi Sujo: Welcome to MWO and YES, there are lots of people here who want to help.

I got sober for a few years with AA, anti-depressants, etc. Kind of the "conventional" way out. After a horrible relapse, during which nothing worked, I discovered MWO and baclofen. I have been taking baclofen daily since Oct. '09. I was drinking daily, all day long at the time. Totally desperate!! I lost the craving to drink too much the very first day, when I took 30 mg of baclofen. I did titrate up as far as 210, or so, but really found that I didn't need such a high dose - my desire for drinking too much just went away, from the first day. I have had long stints completely AF since then, and at other times, have had a glass or two of wine and that was that. COMPLETELY unlike the time when I drank one beer, and within a month was back to drinking as much or more as I ever had.

I'm am so incredibly grateful to have found MWO, Dr. Ameisen, and baclofen. Saved my life! But the same things doesn't work for everybody, which is one reason this forum is so valuable. Please, take a LOT of time and read, read, read way back into the threads regarding the meds you are interested in. I'm sure a huge part of my success was being as fully informed as possibly.

              Good luck!!

I am incredibly grateful to the time taken by so many here to help others. If anyone was under the mistaken impression that those who turn to drink are deficient in some way mentally or psychologically, they should read Dr Ameisen's book or visit this forum.
                Thank you to everybody.:bananacomputer:

Thank you. I can't believe it. I was in tears wanting to die earlier. Will research baclofen. Am in UK so its not so easy...I'm a psychiatric nurse too. I should know better.

I absolutely "ditto" what Space just said! "Knowing better" is not an issue. Don't beat yourself up. Some of us become horribly addicted and others simply don't - doesn't matter what we know.

I got sober initially using all of the tools and information outlined in the My Way Out book, with the exception of Topomax. Had a bumpy ride getting my alcohol free legs under me. Now I go to AA too. These two programs are what work for me.

I'm so glad you found us. My Way Out is such a great site because so many different ideas and methods for getting sober can be openly discussed and reported without judgement. Never give up. Keep trying and you WILL find your way out too.

                      Good luck,

                        Medication choices.

I chose the Sinclair Method, and thereby, naltrexone as my treatment option. My reasoning is quite simple: naltrexone has very few side effects, none are potentially permanent, doesn't require dosage daily for life and I understood the science behind the treatment. I wasn't comfortable with some of the other options or found no information proving efficacy. I am not quite where I want to be, but I don't get drunk every day anymore. My consumption is about 1/3 of my pre TSM consumption (around 90 units per week,) and going down. I sleep very well and can have a few drinks and stop.

It's important you research all the options and choose the one you are most comfortable. Good luck with your search!
Sinclair Method (50mg naltrexone one hour before drinking)

Pre TSM 80-90 Units Per Week, No Alc Free Days

After control: 3-6 units per month, 25+ alcohol free days!

                          Medication choices.

This is just an opinion but I would start with Naltrexone, simply because it is the least disruptive to your life.

I started with Naltrexone and it was working really well. After about 2 months It seemed to be losing it's effectiveness so I ditched it to try Baclofen. I was really excited after reading on MWO about the idea of indifference.

In hindsight and after reading more I wish I had stuck with Nal for a bit longer because I now know there are a lot of peaks and troughs along the TSM and Naltrexone road. Baclofen has worked fantastically for people here but at this stage I don't think it is the answer for me as I was one of the unlucky ones that had a lot of side effects. If I didn't have to work full time I would have stuck with a higher dose and gone up higher and just toughed out the side effects, but with my responsibilities it is just not practical.

At the moment I am either going to try naltrexone again or give Antabuse a go.

Good luck whichever way you go.

                            Bac Topa combo

I'm currently on low dose bac topa combo and doing alright.

Had to lower bac because SE, after couple of relapses asked my Pdoc for some Topa on the top of my low dose bac.
My current regiment: 25mg Topa twice a day, 10 mg Bac 4-5 times a day.

Haven't experienced any SE from my dose of Topa

My head is spinning...tempted to try bac but scared of the s/e. Nal also sounds as if it might be good. What about coming off these meds though.
Shallow I know but what about weigh gain?
