    Baclofen works

    :new:

    Hello all,
I discovered this forum in November and have been lurking since. I started on Baclofen in early Dec 2011.

I'm a 44 year old professional woman. I didn't have a problem with alcohol in my 20s. But then in my 30s I was living with a guy who was a heavy drinker and got into the habit of drinking wine every night. I've been drinking a bottle of wine every night for the past 10 years - more at weekends. I was a functioning drinker as I managed to do very well at work, although I was down and sick a lot from the AL. I was tired of the lifestyle, but unable to give up the wine habit.

So, I went up 20mg a week (at the lower doses it was 10mg every 3 days) on Baclofen and had very few side effects all the way up - except mild somnolence after lunch every day. Luckily I never had the insomnia SE. However, at 180mg the SEs did kick in, but not as badly as those I've heard described on here.

I hit my *switch* at 220mg on 28th Jan, but went up to 240mg and then to 260mg (however could only stay at that level for 3 days as I was barely functionioning - it was a w/e so I slept most of the time).

I also drank the whole way up, but maybe 50%-75% of my weeknight normal amount. The only time I had a big binge, was the night before I hit my switch.

I stayed at 240mg for two weeks. Even though the SEs were not pleasant, I was actually able to do a lot of business meetings during that time. I was gauging people's reaction when I spoke and got a positive response/no sign that there was anything untoward in my outward communication. I probably was a bit slower and relaxed (impossible to get the adrenaline going, even when I was running late lol!), which wasn't a bad thing as sometimes I'm a bit high-energy and intense in work meetings.

Despite that, I felt very removed from reality, buzzed and like time was whizzing by (if that makes sense?) since I began Baclofen in December so made the decision to titrate down. Strangely, the SEs are worse coming down.

I am now at 120mg and plan to say here for a while (although there are much more SEs at this level than at 120mg going up). I've had no urge to drink since 28th January - even though I've had some very stressful/upsetting days. I haven't decided if I will remain entirely AF or have a drink every now and again. For example, my office has arranged a wine-tasting event for our clients at the end of April and I'm the main 'host' so it might be too obvious that I'm not tasting - although I've no urge to do so (i.e. it's the social pressure). I'm thinking right now that I will just sip on sparkling water and say I'm on antibiotics or something. If I have to take some sips I'm not panicked about it - having read Dr A's book, I'll just dose up 40mg the next day.

I don't plan to become a poster on MWO but did want to put my success story here because of the help I got from reading all of your accounts. I might come back to update in 6-12 months on my progress. I'm going to cut and paste this into the 'success' thread too, if I can find it.

Most of the SEs have already been covered on here, but to highlight a few:

    - waking in the middle of the night thinking my alarm has gone off and getting up to make breakfast etc, then after 5 mins wandering around realising it is only 2-3am.

    - my throat became very relaxed and I had nasal drip - which could be annoying

    - titrating down, I've had diarrhoea a lot, didn't on the way up. frequent trips to the bathroom at night too, which seems to be a common SE.

    - numbness in my toes and sometimes my fingers. some drooping in my face ('relaxed').

    - I had a 'hair-loss' stage that lasted a couple of weeks. My hairdresser commented on it, but it seemed to stop.
/>- I put on weight - even tho I'm a chocoholic and on the 2nd day of baclofen I became indifferent to chocolate or anything with sugar in it (that lasted until i had the *switch* and stopped drinking wine, then I started on choc again, but much-much less than before)

    - I had no energy to go to the gym from day 1 of baclofen - but restarted at 180 and I'm now killing it - lifting bigger weights, much more stamina, and no muscle ache/stiffness, even after the most strenuous workout.

    - my taste buds seem to have changed and I'm making healthier food choices - salad suddenly tastes delicious!

    - I'm hypothyroid and my body temp appears to have changed from Baclofen (or being AF). Despite the diagnosis, when I was drinking I was very sensitive to heat (preferred to be in cooler rooms/no heating at night, wore lighter clothes than everyone else etc) - which is not typical of someone who is hypo. Since this bac journey, this has changed and I now need the heating more, and on a cold day brrrr I'm freezing. I also no longer sweat profusely at the gym. Maybe this change in body temp is temporarily causing the weight-gain? I'm not too worried about it as with my healthier diet, lots of exercise, a big reduction in my chocolate habit, and no drinking, my weight will come down eventually (I'm not 'overweight', just want to be slimmer).

    - very dry skin on my body, but that is resolving now I'm at the lower dose of 120mg.

Anyhow, thanks again:l I'm also posting this for other lurkers like me.

*restarted the gym when I was at 180mg titrating down (as 180 going up I was still drinking).

oh and the most serious SE! I lost ALL of my libido - like a numbness of the body - since the first week. It is now returning - but i think i will have to go lower to have it return to normal. That sucks and is my most negative experience of Bac.

Great story, Julianne! Very precise info! Congratulations on your sobriety.
I wouldn't worry too much about the wine tasting. Having been subjected to many wine tastings (for work), I can tell you it's completely socially acceptable to spit the wine out after tasting. In fact, the most knowledgable wine people tend to.
Sorry about the libido. Bac seems to effect people differently in that department. Some people get raging libidos, others lose it. Good to hear it seems to be coming back.
Thanks for posting your experience and best of luck to you!
"Yet someday this will have an end
All choices made or choice resigned,
And in your face the literal eye
        Trace little of your history,
Nor ever piece the tale entire
Of villages that had to burn
And playgrounds of the will destroyed
Before you could be safe from time
And gather in your brow and air
        The stillness of antiquity."

          Hey Julianne,

Sounds like we are very similar in the switch dept and SE dept. I have been on BAC for about a year and 1/2 now and have switched twice. It does certainly work, but you are able to "push" yourself out of your switch if you continue to drink through it... I learned that the first time when I thought this was a miracle moderation med!

After moderating successfully for a while, my daily drinking came back (even at a steady 200mg maintennance dose). I learned that moderation just wasn't for me. I then titrated back up to 300 for a couple of weeks and switched again (lucky me). With the worse side effect being weight gain (again). This time, I'm cherishing the switch and NOT taking advantage of it. I am grateful and trying hard to accept sobriety completely.

          Best wishes to you!
Indifference is in your future with Baclofen. It works!

My frustration with Baclofen, which is shared by Dr. Oliver Ameisen, is that because Baclofen is an off patent medication there is no profit motive for drug companies to support clinical trials that would demonstrate its efficacy in treating addiction.

that's interesting, help4me. thanks. yes, i'm quite wary of drinking for that reason. I don't miss it at all. I've developed a taste for pellegrino - sparkling water - love it!

At the same time, I am a little 'curious' and think i may sometime drink a glass of wine to see can I take 40mg and go back to abstinence again. Like Dr A. did. But not for the moment, and I don't want to 'break' the magic.

funny, a few people today commented that I look 'great, refreshed, have you lost weight?'. I was pleased with that

I am having surgery at end of April - not serious but it will involve anaethesia and I don't know whether to tell the docs about baclofen - I'd rather not tbh. I'm going to titrate down beforehand to 80mg and take 1/2 dose before surgery and the other 1/2 when I wake up.

              Hi Help4me

I see you mention weight gain. I know this is not very frequent but I have gained a stone in weight in the last month sice starting Bac. I really did not want to put on any weight as I have been trying very hard to lose the 4 stones I put on 8 years ago due to anti depressants.:egad::egad:
Can I ask how your weight gain is now?
I am looking on Bac as a means to an end and hoping that once I am Alc free I will lose weight through that alone. I know I have a lot of fluid retention as my ankles look like an elephant :upset: but I would be greatly encouraged if you have any good news. Don't worry if you don't though.:thanks:

                julieanne,
i dont think it would be wise to not tell the doc about bac before going under. really risky. could cause complications with anathesia. at least google it like i just did. it's your life but also not fair for the anathesiologist who is trying to keep you alive. just sayin'.

thanks gratitude. yes something to consider. I def don't want to tell the anaethesiologist about baclofen, so might just have to tritrate off it before surgery. I can always start again afterwards. I'd rather do that.

                    Re: weight gain.

Yes, I most definately gained about 10-12# each time I titrated up to 250+ mg of Baclofen. I craved carbs and packed on the pounds.

Seems when I titrate down and remain at around 160mg with no drinking, my weight slowly goes back to normal. I do think that there is even more weight gain with BAC if you continue to drink whilst on it.

                      update

down to 80mg and feeling more normal (SEs seemed worse to me as I came down). no urge to drink and no anxiety.

still killing it at the gym - lifting heavier weights and can run for an hour (9 km today).

I have never suffered from any major depression, but I have been for the last 2-3 weeks. I am very down, and not used to feeling like this.

my weight is coming down, but slowly. I purposely didn't weigh myself as was titrating up but think I must have gained a lot from bac (had 10lbs to lose before) - even tho I was indifferent to any sugar for two months and am now AF for 9 weeks. still can't fit into some of my clothes.

I plan to go down to 20mg or less (if time allows) before my surgery at the end of April. Afterwards, I will prob go up for 80mg for a while.

That's awesome. I have/had so many of those very same SE's. Dry skins, sinus issues that wake me up, etc. I am at 190mg and I was getting worried I won't hit my switch but your story is reassuring. I am gaining weight also and it's very annoying. I thought I would lose some as I drank less.
                        Congrats to you!

Rock on sister (and you too COS)!

The weight will come off, eventually. It's got to, right? And it has happened for lots of people.

I miss killing it at the gym. but that's got more to do with lack of time...
And I really miss sugar-ambivalence. It is an obsession for me now. Dreadful. (That probably also has something to do with lack of time. I keep forgetting to eat. Anything but MnMs.)

down to 50mg and no sign of craving for a drink - 40mg tomorrow - reducing 10g every 3 days so I'm off bac completely for my surgery.

very annoying about my weight. I've resisted weighing myself until today - turns out I am the heaviest I have ever been. 14 lbs heavier than my previous highest weight (which was when I gave up smoking). So 3 months AF, lots of exercise (I've started running 7 miles x 4 times a week) and yet this.

I'm hoping that whatever baclofen has done to my metabolism will wear off soon as I wean off bac completely.
