About to start a Baclofen Journey

Hi Tim: Just want to pop in to add to your warm welcome to MWO. Sometimes it takes us (okay, me) a little while to get around, but you've found a truly incredible group of support and experience and information here.

I found MWO in Oct. '09, which is when I started taking baclofen, and it was reading everything I possibly could from the early baclofentists that gave me the confidence to give it a go. I encourage you to do the same thing. Knowledge is power, 'ya know. There have been a lot of threads and a lot of stories about baclofen go by on this board that contain amazing, powerful, information. Reading them ALL helped me understand what the possibilities might be, and empowered me to make the right choices for myself. I encourage you to do the same and read, read, read, all the way back.

I have a good feeling about baclofen working well for you fairly quickly. Not being an "all-day" drinker, not having the physical addiction; continuing to research and seek out all the tools that you can add to your resources; not capitulating your entire life to drinking . . . all of these things will work for you, with baclofen.

FWIW, I was one of the "lucky" ones. I started on the "olden days" titration scheduled of 10 mg, 3x/day. I took my first dose in the parking lot of the Post Office where I picked up my "letter." It was morning, but I'm sure I'd already been drinking. Within 10-15 minutes, I literally felt a deep, visceral "letting down," in my body. It was the release of anxiety that Dr. Ameisen describes, that was driving my craving to drink. I KNEW then that baclofen would work for me. I did not know that the first day that I took bac would be the last day that I drank against my will and choice.

AND, my side-effects ranged from negligible to enjoyable. Really. Never any somnolence, never any insomnia due to a non-addictive med I was already taking for sleep, never any breathing issues - maybe due to long-time yoga practice.

I see your question about when to take your doses. That will depend upon what dose you decide to start with. If you're going to start with 5 mg/day, I would suggest taking it mid-afternoon, in order to stave-off the evening cravings. If you start with 5 mg. 3x/day, you might try 5 at 10 am, 5 at 2 pm, and 5 at 5 pm.

Reading back (notice I'm mentioning that AGAIN!), you'll find this is one of the "person-specific" issues that many people have grappled with and resolved in many different ways. Having been a morning drinker, it was best for me to take my first dose when I woke up. I've always used the 3x per day format, regardless of my dosage. It's worked perfectly well for me. It does not work perfectly well for everyone. But starting from somewhere will inform you about what works for you.

Also - if you have not read Dr. Ameisen's book, I'll take a strong stand and say that it's really a "must" if you are going down this path. Keep posting and asking questions. . Baclofen works!

About to start a Baclofen Journey

Ok the Baclofen has finally arrived. For information purposes only I ordered from Goldpharma on the 14th of March and they have arrived in the UK to my doorstep on 26th of March.

So here goes, I am going to follow the titration schedule given Krs, so that's me starting on Monday 26th March 2012 with a 5mg dose. I will take this at 12 pm and do the same for the next three days before taking the dose up to 10mg on Friday Saturday and then Sunday.

I hope to report as frequently as I can on the effects on my anxiety, mood and drinking habits and to try and be as accurate as possible with any SE's.

      Wish me luck.

About to start a Baclofen Journey

Oh by the way had a pretty anxious weekend this weekend, had quite a lot to drink yesterday, although it was spaced out over the day from around 12pm until nine thirty in the evening, but then woke up at three in the morning and had a shot of vodka to get me back off to sleep. Feel crappy today but managing to get work done. Lets hope this works out.

            Hey, Tim:
I have had NO medical advise, am not a medical expert, and am only reporting my own experience.

I have used valium while taking baclofen, with no bad effects. I'm not encouraging or discouraging you, but wanted to let you know that someone has been there, done that, and found it useful. And I AM wishing you luck

About to start a Baclofen Journey

              Hey guys,

Thought I would do a quick update. Day three, fiber msg on Monday and Tuesday taken around 12 pm.

Mood, seems fine, but the depression has lifted for me with the prozac

Anxiety, got very anxious when i took the first dose, nothing to do with bac I am like this with all meds. Similar yesterday. BUT I have noticed a very slight decrease in my generl anxiety. Possibly a placebo effect.

Drinking. I have stopped gulping down the first couple of glasses. But still drinking a similar amount

Hi Tim. I just hit on your post at the right time. I have Bac in the drawer here and almost scared to take it. Made in India has me freaked. Will it be ok to take? I'm in Ireland and had to get shipped to uk and then over here. I am same as you and just need to stop the evening drinking. I think I will follow your schedule.

About to start a Baclofen Journey

Hi Satz: Don't know where Tim is. Probably he will check back in soon. But just wanted to tell you that I took baclofen made in India in October '09, and I haven't been drunk since the first day. And I was drinking all day - from the wee early hours when I would wake up shaking and sick - at the time.

I am full of encouragement for you, if you want to try bac. I had almost no side-effects, quit drinking alcoholically right away, and am still on-my-knees grateful to Dr. Ameisen, MWO, and the early baclofentists who were posting at that time.

I read EVERYTHING, and that gave me the confidence to give it a go. Once it worked so brilliantly for me, I went to a Dr./friend to get a prescription, and now she occasionally refers patients to me to help them through their titration. I can see that it's really great for those patients to have the support of their Dr. (who will only prescribe the bac if they agree to work with me, because she has no real clue about side-effects, titration rate, etc.) and someone who has "been there (drunk), done that (achieved indifference to alcohol)."

I continue to read almost everything that has been posted here and anywhere else about baclofen. The knowledge I gained in all of those posts has kept me safer and surer than I could have ever been on my own. May I suggest you give yourself a huge gift and read back through the baclofen posts- even through a couple of years. Knowledge is power . . . or something like that.

The only precaution I would have for you, noting what you mention above about having to get it shipped to the UK and then on to you in Ireland, is to make sure that you always have plenty of balcofen on hand, and a reliable source for more, as you move into this journey. Baclofen is not a "silver bullet" (well, actually, it kinda' was, for me), and, just like any other "way out," requires diligence and determination.

Those things said, I heartily support you to make a plan, read, read, read, or ask around to find out where you want to begin your titration dosage, and GO for it.

And, actually, I spend a lot of time in India. I buy a LOT of meds there, OTC, that would cost me and arm and a leg here in the U.S., for fractions of the cost. Truly, nothing to be concerned about taking medications from India. Only be concerned that you have enough and can get enough to help you find YOUR way out. Bestest of luck!!
