Hi, Sujo. I was wondering what happened to you. It's good to see you back. Keep on quitting. You'll get there.

            1. Yes, I am a practicing doc, and I have little to gain personally from documenting my experience and criticising bac.
            2. Every post I entered here has been stone cold sober.
            3. The thing about golf came from Alice Cooper's book - he used an obsession with golf as a way of focussing on something more healthy.
            4. I don't think I will try daily bac 30 mg because a very well conducted placebo controlled RCT from some experienced researchers in the States showed it did very little. I have found bac 20 mg to be anxiolytic, and my psych agreed with me that it has minimal downside, so it may be useful in my recovery.

Thanks to all who have made helpful and very thoughtful suggestions. All the best with your plans. I hope this post might help some people.

            It helped me. Thank you.

I think there have been a couple of other doctors who posted here. They quickly retreated. As you discovered, no one wants to hear about science, despite proclamations to the contrary. This is a support forum (everything works!), and few people understand clinical studies. It is not as easy to understand as it looks. So there are a bunch of people here pulling up Google stuff "proving" that hdb works. They really have no clue.

The truth is that there is no good treatment for alcoholism. But, it is worthwhile trying everything.

Nah...Ginger says this stuff a lot. Just because someone cuts down on his/her drinking, it doesn't mean they were not nasty, evil people to begin with.

That's exactly what I meant, Space! As I said, my post to him was targeted toward recovery from alcoholism (because he is a drunk), as opposed to the suspicious claims he made or the motivations that he ascribed to others. Really, I think the whole Golfmonster/BillF tag teaming is just another tiresome rerun from a man of many, many screen names. How boring.

                  That is completely disingenuous.

You called him a drunk to insult him, nothing else.

As I said, I don't know Golf at all. You can concoct all the conspiracy theories you want.

The guy described his serial experiences with various meds. He said that there is scant evidence in the medical literature supporting any (true).

If you disagree, do so. Don't call someone a drunk and a liar; he was very civil and just described his personal experience.

                  What's wrong with you?

                    Wow.
I gracefully bow out. The sickies can win this one.
I struggle with anger issues, but I will not indulge myself here. To argue with someone who is either very mentally ill, very antagonistic, or most likely both is below me and counterproductive to my personal recovery. Such a person feeds off of the responses and the anger they generate, and I refuse to add fuel to that fire.
So I am taking a deep breath and calmly suggesting that Bill associate with people who are smarter than us and share his values.
I will go back on my word to say one thing. Bill, we can't stop you from posting here. But don't you fucking ever, ever again take something I said elsewhere out of context to back up your point. If you're as goddamnmed intelligent as you say you are, you don't need to reference someone who is as ignorant and despises you as much as me.

Ginger, should we develop a code word when such people appear? One of us could just post the word, and we'd all agree not to post further. This is a waste of our time. Apparently very smart people have all the time in the world, but us idiots should really conserve ours.:H

Haven't been on the board for a while but this thread is very upsetting.
                          Why all the vitriol?
Supposedly, this is a support board. I've been a member here for several yrs & have seen some heated discussions, but nothing like this.
I saw nothing in this member's posts that should incite such nastiness. But even if there was, why would y'all jump on him instead of simply ignoring the post?
                          I don't get it. (But I guess I don't have to...)

A few reasons occur to me:

Fringe treatments like high-dose baclofen attract especially fervent acolytes. The less the science, the more crazy the followers.

Look, some therapies do or do not work. It is scientifically ridiculous to pretend that everything needs to be supported. Yet, in a support forum, everything is equal.

The OP, being a mere doc, wanted to invoke science. As you said, this is a support forum, not a venue for medical discussions. No one understands clinical studies.

If some one takes 200+ a day of baclofen, he/she has to believe it works. It seems impossible to me that there are no significant side-effects, and thus the they *have* to cling to the belief that their lives have been saved. Any expression of doubt is a challenge to their entire belief system bordering on the religious.
