campral maintenance dose
Hi, After heavy drinking most of adult life, I was greatly helped with campral for almost three years (was taking 2 pills three times a day for first year, then doctor stopped prescribing). Unfortunately, recently relapsed. My question is does anyone take a "maintenance" dose of campral (like 1 pill two or three times a day); is it safe to take on an ongoing basis for rest of life. Any help deeply appreciated. Thanks,TomTags: None

campral maintenance dose
HI Tom
So am I right in saying that you took if for the first year, stopped taking it for 2 years and then started drinking again?
I also take Campral, and it has helped me greatly also and have been abstinent for many momnths for the first time in years...It really should get more recognition.
In answer to your question, the dose is always the same for everyone, there is no maintenance dose. 2 x333 mg three times a day. The only time it is less than that is when you are under a certain weight, I think around 60 kg.
I know this c=just because my psychiatrist told me, and he's a specialist in alcohol problems.

campral maintenance dose
I have taken Campral in the past. From what the doctor told me and what I have read it is recommended that you stay on the dose 2 x 333mg - 3 times daily for a year. I asked my gp about safety and he said he could find no safety concerns about staying on it longer. I dont see why there would be problem for you to take it for another year without worry, at the end of that year you could then decide what to do next.
By the way, Im not a doctor just saying what I learned from taking it myself
Good luck

TomTom, if it were me (and it kinda is!) I'd go on it for another year then stop it again. Its probably circumstance or a moment of weakness that started you drinking again, rather than physiology, get out of the habit of drinking again with the aid of Campral then reassess after a year. If you feel you're happier taking it, then by all means.
All the best,

Campral is great... so far
Hey guys, to revive an old thread...
I went on a bender for a couple of weeks then went through detox at home. My sympathetic doctor scripted me more valium than I needed, and I managed to be responsible with it just to get to sleep for the first couple of weeks of abstinence, it also helped with anxiety during the day cause of it's long half life. The trouble I have is a mid level anxiety that is with me for the first few months after I stop drinking, which is usually why I relapse.
My doctor suggested campral and explained that it has a similar action to a low dose of valium, albeit through a slightly different neural mechanism, and would probably be of benefit. Now I'm a scientist by trade and did my research and found that what he explained was true, so decided to give it a go. I also liked the idea that I didn't have to obtain it illegaly, through the internet, nor beg a doctor to prescribe a treatment he had never heard of. All good for less anxiety too.
I went through the baclofen course a couple of years ago, and it didn't help. Then my online pharmacy took forever to deliver, and I ran out, an that was hell, very similar to bad alcohol detox, if anyone's been through that.
So I started the campral the other day, and it is working as intended. So far, two weeks dry. Calm as a cucumber, and if things stay this way, I don't think I'll have much trouble keeping off the booze.
I'll keep you all posted.
Ernest.
