I know this is an older thread but I feel the need to bump it up. I just started taking l-tryptophan (Amazon.com: Source Naturals L-Tryptophan 500mg, 120 Capsules: Tommy James: Health & Personal Care) and I cannot believe how well it works to get me to sleep. I should have listened to Joan Mathews Larson way back when I read about it in Seven Weeks to Sobriety back in 2009. Read the reviews! This stuff is great. I take two pills at 8:00 p.m. or so, and by 9:30 or 10:00 I cannot keep my eyes open.
For the record, here are a few of the drugs/supplements I've used in the past for sleep:

Doxylamine succinate
Seroquel
Trazodone
Amitriptylene
5-HTP
Valerian
Kava Kava
Xanax
Ativan
I can't believe it took me so long to try this stuff. Just wanted to give a heads-up to my fellow insomniacs out there. I am feeling wonderful, sober and well-rested!
