    AB diabetes

I started ab 8 days ago and everything is going well. I was diagnosed with diabetes about a year ago and take the minimal dose of glimipiride each morning. i haven't any problems with and mt fbs in the morning is around 90-100.

Well, since I started ab, my fbs has gone up to around 140-150. I called the diabetic health nurse and and she said that made sense, since alcohol tends to lower your bs.

Then I called the dr. -he told me stop taking the ab and to make an appt! I'm going tomorrow, but in the mean time, I'm freaking out. All the info I can find on the web has to do with the effects of drinking on diabetes, not the other way round.

Does anyone have any knowledge about this? AB has been a godsend - I do not want to stop.

    Hi Hippiegirl,

Don't worry about it too much. It might be a temporary effect.
I am a borderline diabetic and on Antabuse for almost 3 months.
Indeed it is a miracle drug. Or at least it is for me. I think your FBS will
    normalize soon.
You might want to consider to take AB every other day for a while.
After almost three months I am taking it so sporadically.
Sometimes I just realize I did not take it for 4-5 days. Then I just pop one in
to make sure that I am staying on the right track.

    Good Luck,

    Brian

Hi Hippie, did your doc prescribe the AB? if he/she didnt then they will not want you to take it, you are only supposed to take meds prescribed by docs as far as docs are concerned. The most important thing for you to do is loook after your health, and if you have diabetes then you need to look after that.

I have never heard of AB having an effect on diabetes but then I dont know anyone who takes it and also has diabetes, thats the problem with boards like this, often when things arnt a problem they dont get mentioned or they get entioned less than the things that cause problems. So I should have just said there, I dont know.

you only have to wait one day and you will find out, so try not to worry.

      Good luck

        I disagree with you.
" loook after your health" for me means to take AB if it is working for you.
If this was an interaction between the two medicines, I would rather switch my
diabetes medicine to another one, or try to manage diabetes the natural way like I do.
You do not need medicine to control diabetes, just eat foods with no or minimum carbs.

The effect of get off heavy alcohol consumption far outweighs the benefits of any diabetes
medicine. As a matter of fact I would much rather control diabetes without any medicine.

        just my 2c.

          .

          just my 2c.
You say you are borderline diabetic, not sure what that means but diabeties is a serious illness that does need treatment, maybe you cant sort yours without it but I think its dangerous to advise other people to do that as well.

I am not disputing the danger of heavy alcohol consumption but the danger of diabeties must surely be equal.

When I took AB for those 6 months it was taking it daily that I needed. Antabuse is a psychological/physical detterant, nothing else, miss a day then that detterant value has gone down, miss a couple of days then you alsmost may as well not take it, I say almost because IMO thats when it gets dangerous, I didnt know how many days it was, so I would just take 1/2 at random, when I drank I didnt know how long it was from my last AB, I guessed, correctly that I wouldnt have enough in my body to do much damage, I was still very sick tho, but drank though it. It could have gone a very much worse way that I had miscalculated totally and had too much AB and ended up dead. So when I took 100mg a day every day I was ok in knowing I couldnt drink at all. When I started thinking that maybe I wanted to drink and lost the motivation to remain AF the AB became random.

Anyhow sorry for hijacking your thread Hippie, I hope all has gone well at the docs and you have got everything sorted. I am wondering (Im not a doctor) if its just the case that you are still detoxing and this will all settle down anyway in a few days.

It is not dangerous. Anyone can cure themselves from diabetes naturally.

OK, I'm just going to answer this question with my opinion.

Its OK to skip your Antabuse dose as you have taken it for a 8 days so you are covered for the next 4 days. I don't know much about diabetes but surely anyone can see stopping to pour a 1/5 of whisky down your throat will HELP your diabetes. Alcohol has about the same amount of sugar as cane sugar and a friend of mine with serious diabetes goes into a sugar coma when he has more than 6 drinks.

I think you need to be honest with your doctor and explain to him how important this is to you. If he is a good doctor he will realise that Antabuse is much better for your health than going without. He will also find a way for you to adjust your other meds until everything settles.

Hang in there my friend, the Antabuse will cover you, this is just a blip, please report back here and get a second opinion if you are not happy with the first. Oh, and keep on researching the topic.

              :l :l :l

Hippie where are you? are you ok?

Did you see your doc, please get in touch and let us know how your doing.. Please dont go changing your diabetes meds either without consulting your doctor.

As Dizzy said you cant drink anyway for another 5 days so if you have a few days break from the AB you are still covered by it

Hi all and thanks for the reassurance. Yes, I did see the doc Monday and all is well. He agreed that the rise is blood sugar is probably due to the lack of drinking, not the AB. He is going to have me in for some liver function test to make sure that's doing ok and said to go ahead and continue with the AB. This guys actually sounds like he know what he's talking about!

Even though my fbs has gone up, it still isn't all that high. And I'm hoping that I will be able to lose a chunk of weight that might let me get off the diabetes meds altogether one of these days.

You'd think that by not drinking, my caloric intake has now gone down almost 2000 calories a day - that's gotta show sooner or later, I'd hope!

Hope everybody's having a good day?

Good to hear that your OK. with AB. Your post gave me an idea and started a new thread about weight loss after quit drinking. You would think that not drinking anymore would
make it easy to lose weight. That sounds very logical, but my experience was different.
I lost some weight, but it was not easy and not automatic as you would think.
Anyway, good luck on your journey with AB!
