    Librium and weight loss

I'm new here but have been lurking for some time. I appreciate all who post on this forum. I find it much more positive and helpful than AA.

Anyway, I was a very heavy drinker i.e. liter of vodka and 6 pack beer per day.

I finally had enough and went to the dr. I was given an rx for Librium which has worked wonders! No problem with uncomfortable withdrawal symptoms much to my relief.

But, My have no appetite. (Not that I am complaining as the extra 10lbs on me I would be happy to let go)

Just wondering if this has happened with anyone else because it seems that what I read is that one of the side effects of Librium is increase in appetite.

    Any responses would be appreciated.

Also want to say congrats to all who have had success being AF

    Gucci,

    :welcome: to MWO.

I took Librium on one of my many (sigh) detoxes and also lost my appetite. Librium is a depressant, so it does make some sense.

One of those gift horses I would not look at too closely. :-)

Have you got a good plan for staying sober?

Many here can jump in with advice. There is a good thread called the tool box, there are several threads for those just starting out, etc.

I hope you find the support here helpful in your journey to sobriety.

I am new to this too, but was prescribed librum, did you take the prescribed dose? and how many days before you felt decent again? I have not had an appitite, but chalked that up to withdrawals in general.
Wishing you the best of luck! and did they make you feel loopy?

Great topic. Does librium flag your health insurance that you're bipolar or al.kie?

Thanks. I don't see it sold on All Day Chemist. I'd like to try it for AL loss and fat loss. The fatness drives me to drink!

                  Thanks for the responses.

Brief background about my physical response from drinking is that I could only sleep 4 hours at a time without getting up and getting very sick with out a few shots of vodka to get me back to a comfortable place to go back to sleep (which didn't always happen). More times than not I would just stay up for the day and continue until I could crash for another 4 hours again.

So I go to the doc and I get an rx for 25mg librium to take 3 times a day. Of course, I was terrified of being sick so I took 100 mg per day.

First day, I felt VERY LITTLE withdrawl...almost couldn't believe it but I welcomed it.
Did not feel loopy at all but just a little tired at night so I went to bed and slept for 9 hours straight. Can't remember the last time that happened! Loved it. I have felt great ever since.

I want to be a social drinker and have a beer now and then but I know I got to stay away from the vodka.

I don't know if its my body chemistry or what but that librium and me agree. After I get past the first few weeks I'm going to get a low dose rx just for general anxiety. Not that I want it all the time but I havent felt this calm in so long....even before I started drinking.

One of the beautiful gifts of being sober is now I can drive again!!!! (I always refused to drink and drive for fear of my kids having a mom in jail). So happy that we can go anywhere anytime. I love this life!!!

Good luck to all of you and I can not thank you enough for all the posts and support for this site and this forum

                  Grateful!!!

Congrats gucci, you have what we all want, I hope you keep it.

That anxiety you speak of is something that has egged alot of us on in our drinking. Many people use low dose baclofen for it.

                    Librium has me intrigued...

                      Librium and weight loss

Hi gucci, great work. I have detoxed several times using Valium, which is similar to Librium. I have sometimes had less appetite as part of the detox process, but sometimes my appetite has increased too. My digestive system and appetite change partly due to no longer having alcohol there all the time.

Staying sober is definitely the hardest part. Valium has helped me amazingly with the acute withdrawal symptoms but staying sober afterwards has always been a challenge.

I'd say look around the forum and ask others for advice on staying sober. Many manage by taking baclofen in large daily doses. I'm looking into a new treatment which I'll post about on the forum when I find out about it. I have used Antabuse to get periods of sobriety I would not otherwise have had, and I used a controversial (and not recommended by me) combination of low-dose cannabis plus 1 mg Xanax at night to stay away from alcohol for 19 months (but tolerance to the Xanax finally set in, and cannabis gave me a few uncomfortable psychological side effects). I also had two months sober many years ago with the help of Campral, L-glutamine, and the antihistamine promethazine (Phenergan) for sleep. I have thought of long-term Valium but am worried about tolerance, and then having to withdraw from it.

Many others have found it far easier to be alcohol-free than myself, and I have a 20+ history of serious untreatable depression in addition to alcoholism, so don't feel put off just by my story. I only wrote my bit to emphasize how much effort and desperation is often needed to stay away from alcohol. I have tried having a few beers too, but have never once managed this without a full-blown relapse within days or weeks back to my original 15-20 drinks per night level. You may have success just having a beer or two if also taking baclofen, or perhaps naltrexone.

                      Best of luck!

                        Hi Bruun,

You won't find it at any of the online pharmacies. The drug is a benzodiazepine so it's a controlled substance.

                        Congrats Gucci!

Gucci- how are you doing now? i was just prescribed librium and am a little nervous about all of this. my best friend is alcohol and am afraid of giving it up but i know how bad this is for my body and soul! i just want to sleep. this habit/addiction is ruining my life. i want my life back.

do you have any suggestions on how to get through this loss? i don't agree with AA so i will not go there. family is no support for me. Im doing this alone and am scared.

any words of advice or encouragement are appreciated.
