Got My Antiabuse, but Hesitant To Start It

Most of my concern is my liver. I have abused it with alcohol and Tylenol sometimes up to 4000 milligrams a day that I want to give it a rest. I was thinking weekly or every three days. I am afraid of the side effects and feel I want drink unless I was off it at least ten days. I want to do what will be the most successful though. Also does anyone have problems with vinegar? I eat that a lot. :thanks:

If you are worried about your liver why dont you go to your doc and get it checked out, Im in UK so I can go anytime and this is free, I do realise tho tht in other places this may be costley, I dont know where you are but I do think it would be worth doing.

With regards to antabuse, when I had 6 months AF with it that was when I took it every day although I did cut the pill in 1/2 so was taking 100mg not the whole 200mg. By doing this I knew I totally could not drink and it became part of my daily routine to take it. When I started taking it every few days was when I was thinking about drinking and did eventually drink. So my answer to that is I would always recommend taking every day, even at a lower dose.

I found no problem with any food, mouthwash, perfume or anything, I am wondering whether those se's come from when people take antabuse at high doses, my daughters bf was prescribed it at 400mg a day!

Are you still taking the Tylenol, we call that Parecetamol over here, why were you taking it, if you have a problem that is causing you that much pain have you seen a doc about that. If its the same strength as paracetamol then 4000mg so should be ok but Im still worried about how long you have been taking it and what for. Do you have a free medical phone line there that you can call to get advice, I mean regarding the cause of your pain.

I take milk thistle extract, its said to help cleanse and heal the liver, there are robably other supps as well you could look into. Try and drink lots of water and eat plenty of veg as well.

Yeah the Tylenol is probably not good. If it's just for hangover headaches, I take ibuprophen. I also take a lot of milk thistle--that's been shown to help the liver recover, but in people who have stopped drinking. Not sure if it helps while still drinking, but I take it anyway.

I have no experience with anabuse, but I do think it's one of the cruel ironies of the world that it's kind of tough on the liver.

I second the liver tests. Where did you get the anabuse? If it was a doc they should want to do tests anyway...

I got it from an online pharmacy. I don't want my doctor to know about this. I have a very good reason. Today, I went off on my husband. I don't know if I am irritable from withdrawal. It has been only three days. I have to control myself better. Even the Ativan is not working.

you wouldnt have to tell the doc exactly why you want tests done, ask him for routine healthcheck can you have you bloods done.

            Antabuse concerns

Definitely get your liver checked out, whether now or after starting the AB. My liver enzymes were going up steadily when I was drinking, so I worked out this plan/schedule and prsented it to my doctor. He approved it.

So I starting taking the AB. After a couple weeks of AF and AB, my doctor had me get my enzymes checked again. They were sky high! He called and said to stop taking the AB immediately :-(

I don't think this is very common, at least from reading here, but you should know what your liver is up to regardless.

I had my liver checked before starting AB, I will get it done again soon and let you all know what happened.

Hi bebe - doing well, thanks for asking. The week and a half that I was on AB turned the corner for me. Haven't had a drink since and I haven't had much in the way of cravings. Every now and then, I think how nice it would be just to get a bottle and get drunk - just once more. But then I think - wait, I don't drink :-)

Still, I don't think I could have done this earlier in my drinking years. But for whatever reason, I was just ready now. For a while after I stopped, I didn't really feel all that much better ( except for no hangovers, of course) but now - I feel great - happy to the nth degree, back into my life.
