    DMAE Question

Hi, through sheer determination and some serious life changes, I have currently gone 8 months with no alcohol. This is maybe a silly question, but I'll ask it anyway. I know some members like taking DMAE to decrease cravings, I'm more interested in it for it's function to increase acetylcholine, for a memory/mood enhancer, as I feel I have my cravings under control. One thing that worries me is the fact it's called an amino alcohol. Since I managed to quit my drinking I've been nervous about putting anything in my body containing the word alcohol, ie mouthwash etc. Is DMAE alcohol?? And if not, what is an amino alcohol? Is this anything for me to be concerned about? I purchased some DMAE, but have been reluctant to take it until someone can put my mind at ease lol. Now I truly feel like an idiot for asking such a silly question, but oh well! :H

    DMAE Question

Hi, first off I think you would probably get a better response if you post this in the holistic section. Also I dont know anything about DMAE but amino acids are present in our bodies and we either get them from food or make them, so depending on the formula I would probably think that it doesnt contain alcohol, unless it is in liquid form, then alcohol may be used, check on the bottle. In UK alcohol is also called ethanol, not sure but there may also be other names for it, google them.

Relax! DMAE is diethylaminoethnolamine. It's not alcohol. Seriously, dude.

        DMAE Question

I studied chemistry in some detail in my younger years, so I can at least look at a name and a molecular structure and be able to understand it (although not pretending to be an expert).

I agree with Krill 100 percent, this substance in pure form does NOT contain ethanol (drinking alcohol). Many organic (carbon-based) chemicals have names that make them sound like alcohol, but all it means is that they share one common feature (a hydroxyl group, represented by an -OH part if you look up their chemical structure) with drinking alcohol. Normal ethanol, for example, is CH3-CH2-OH by chemical structure. DMAE is a different and more complex chemical, but one that still contains the -OH group.

If you get this substance in pill or other solid form, it would definitely not contain alcohol. As already said however, if it is in liquid form, then alcohol could indeed be an added component of that liquid, and you would need to be sure of what is in it.

Huh? Really? I've not heard of that before. I've heard of it being used as a face cream though. Are you sure people are using DMAE to decrease cravings?
