    Topamax or not?

    Hi Everyone!

I'm new with a question. Did you take medications to stop? If so, why? If not, why not?

I have the supplements and hypno-tapes but the longest I seem to be able to go AF is 4 days and I have been trying to get this under control since last February.

I have ordered Topamax but am scared to take it. I was recently diagnosed with hypothyroid/Vitamin D deficiency. I double checked to make sure there would be no drug interactions; however, I'm just now starting to feel better and don't want to feel bad again.

    Thoughts?

    Topamax or not?

What do you drink? As read on here (and experienced) topamax does great for those who drink beer or wine. They taste metallic with the med.

It is a hard drug to get used to. Do it on a weekend (if you don't have anything to do).

Some people affectionatly call it Topa Dopa for a reason.

When I took it I reduced my shots from 18 to 3. I just didn't want them. I wanted lemonade.

Then I stopped taking them. And increased the shots.

So I do think they help. But they aren't a drug for the weak.

Check out the Topamax page. Lots of good info there.

        Topamax or not?

My mind keeps saying just one drink!

Thank you, thank you, thank you for your response.

My alcohol of choice is wine. Red, white, doesn't matter. I have been drinking for years but now if I take one drink, I gulp and empty the bottle and then start on the next until I pass out.
Yes, I drink at home at night. If I go out and have a drink, I get my buzz and come home and drink until I pass out.

So, I'm on day 4 AF and CRAVING! The L-Glut, supplements, etc. have helped but wow, am I like an OCD puppy wanting that drink.

Did you try to do this with 15 mg then taper up?

          Topamax or not?

Yes. Then 25mg. Then 25mg two times per day.

Did you read K9's posts about changing the rooms where you drank around? I'm going to do that this weekend!

Ahhh... I found it on my Microsoft Word; I've been copying things down for my AF weekend! Here it is. Brilliant!

          From K9:

I had one cusion on the couch that was my drinking spot...so for a while I moved to the other side of the couch. It's so simple that it sounds ridiculous, but it works. I moved a lamp too so that the light was coming from a different angle. Also, maybe you could add some soft lights...they sell these bulbs that are only 7.5 watts (lightbulb strength) but fit in full sized lamps...you can really make it cozy. Believe me, I tried anything AND everything...but it worked!

Also, I heard that day 3 and 4 are the worst. So you gotta make it to the 5th! Make sure to keep your belly full! But not too full! Just right!

              Great Advice!

              Thank you Rainyday!

I will change things around, keep busy, keep tummy full...and try to chase this nagging
wine-o on my back away. This is the time where I really always seem to trip up so I'm glad to hear day 3 and 4 are the worst. I will really, really focus on each minute to get to day 5. Thank you again.

                Topamax or not?

Hi Winning, I am on day 11 and so far so good, I havent had any bad days at all so I cant comment on any bad se', Im going with what it says in the book. The first week, 25mg a day, the second week I am taking 25mg but a bit different from the book I am taking one of a morning and one of an afternoon, for timing you just have to see how it makes you feel, it seems to make some people sleepy and others (me) wakey . About the drinking on topa, an example is tonight I opened a can at around 6pm, and had a bit, then forgot about it until about 8pm when I threw the rest away, I just didnt want it, and that seems to be the effect it has, some days I have drank more. As I say its early days but come over to the topa thread and you will get advice from more people threre as well, I post on there most days. x

Winning - I am not very good at cutting putting in links but this might work for you. it is a thread that has been going for a long time and would take ages to read through - but you can post there and all of us at one time or another have been on Topa. I have had success with topa myself - a very long story - am still drinking now, but not a lot.... but Topa works differently for everyone. I have very few side effects (SE's) and I do think it is really good. Have a look at the thread and come and post - looking forward to seeing you there,

How simple it is to see that we can only be happy now and there will never be a time when it is not now....
