How often to take Antabuse?

Hi,

I will be starting Antabuse tomorrow and I am very nervous. The directions are to take it everyday, but I would like to take it less than that. From everything I have read it stays in your system for quite some time. I am absolutely terrified of the effects of drinking on it having read all the horror stories so knowing it is in my system will work for me. I also am quite worried about the general side-effects and adding more damage to my poor liver.

How infrequently can I take it while keeping it consistently in my system? I hope that makes sense. I am not looking to have it wear completely off at any point.

Basically, wouldn't taking it every 5 days work the same as taking it everyday?

I take AB (antabuse) every morning with my vitamin. Yes, taking it once every 5 days would work, for some but not for me. My AL (alcohol) brain would tell me that I haven't taken it for X amount of day so X more days and I can drink. My safety net is to take it everyday so there is no argument about whether or not I can drink.

And, in case you decided to drink after 5 days, it can still be in your system and cause some SE's (side effects). Depending on the person, it can take up to 2 weeks to get out of you system.

That's just what works for me. I am sure others will chime in with their methods!

If you are going to take it, it should be daily. It will do far less damage to your liver than alcohol will. I know it's frightening, but the side effects are few, unless you drink. I can't take it now, but it gave me so much confidence, the desire for alcohol left me immediately. There is nothing better than knowing you will be violently ill if you drink, than this drug. I have never heard of anybody dying whilst taking it, on the other hand alcohol kills people daily.

I suggest taking it every day. Make it a habit, and just do it. My daily mantra is TTDP (Take The Damn Pill). I gave up "messing" with Antabuse a long time ago...taking it here and there, "forgetting", etc....all that led me to was drinking. Commit to taking it, and make it part of your daily routine. And please do NOT test it...I drank on it and it was like something out of poltergeist...

Lost, everything affects our liver, but nothing quite as badly as alcohol. I couldn't take it because I have a heart problem. The drug was discovered about 60 years ago. It is a safe as any drug can be, as long as you don't drink. I would suggest you do as K9 says, TTDP, as long as you are medically ok.

ditto K9 and Paula. it can save your life. if you feel you need to you can take 2X the dose daily.. just drink lots of water. and please don't test it. not fun.

No way I am testing it. I am doing ok for now but I am thinking it might be a good way to bolster things for me.

I think the idea of how sick I would be if I drank would be the nail in the coffin.

I took antabuse everyday for 6 months and it worked great for me, then I started taking it every other day and the next thing I knew I wasnt taking antanbuse anymore and I was drinking. So for me, and for most people I think, take it every morning.

Excellent post Space...for me, skipping one day became skipping two, which became skipping five, which became me going back to drinking. TTDP....EVERY DAY! :l

I have taken Antabuse every 2 or 3 days but I began deliberately waiting until it was out of my system so I could drink again. Now I take it every morning and it stops me wanting alcohol that way, as it has become a habit to take it and I know I just can't drink. I only take a half a pill, as even that is enough to cause a horrible reaction with alcohol while reducing any chance of liver damage.

If you are like me, and others here, taking it every morning can really work to stop all the planning ahead to drink!
