    Meeting Phill

    Hi all

We just got back from a trip to Lancashire and the Lake District and on our travels we met up with Phill Thomas (Baclofen 4 Alcoholism). I called him up on short notice and we met up. Had a good laugh and compared notes on bac etc. I had never met him before but he is a very friendly, kind and intelligent man who takes what he is doing very seriously but does not lose sight of the bigger picture, that this is all about getting one's life back and not getting caught up in theorizing and obsessing over what people think of him.

My wife was very happy to meet him at long last and in a state of genuine sobriety, in part due to his always being there at the end of the phone in times of crisis.

In addiction, suppression of symptoms should suppress the disease altogether since addiction is, as he observed, a "symptom-driven disease". Of all "anticraving medications used in animals, only one - baclofen - has the unique property of suppressing the motivation to consume cocaine, heroin, alcohol, nicotine and d-amphetamine"

    Hi Arizona and Otter,
I am new to bac as well. I just started.. yesterday as a matter of fact! I've never been more excited about getting sober and staying sober, truly, in my whole life. +30 years of drinking. I've been to Dr. Phill's website and actually ordered by bac from his site. I am following the prescribing guide, version 2. 3/26/2012. It's a very slow process with this method and my impulsive side wants to move forward fast.

Even at .5mg 2x per day I feel amazing.. Maybe it's in my head because I want sobriety so badly, but last night, I was very tired. Today, I feel relaxed and motivated.. not how I usually feel.

I wondering how both of you ended up at 400+ mg per day? That does seem like a high dose, even for high dose. Did Dr. Phill recommend a different approach?

Just a newbie wannabe. Thanks again

Strike that!.. That was dumb of me.
Of course you can get to 400mg even 600mg. It's well within the prescribing dosage of mg to kg's.
      I'm sorry for my question..

            Sober and Mom,

Nothing to add except welcome! I did not use Phil, I have Dr. L out of Chicago. But just wanted to encourage you on your journey. Dr. A, Baclofen and Dr L changed my life. From 2-3 binges a week to no binges for more than 96 days and counting! It wasn't easy, especially at the higher doses but I stuck to it, it was well worth it for me.

Please consider starting your own thread so that we can follow and you can get the support from some of the Baclofen veterans who give really good advice.

            Again, Welcome & God Bless!

            Cheers!

Thank you Texas. I am an absolute mess and I think this is my last hope. I pray to God this works for me. My boys need their mom, my husband needs his wife, and I want to live!

Praying for you as we speak! I don't want to hijack Otter's thread and I just saw your thread (Doc in Alabama) so I'll jump over there.

                God Bless!

The titles in the title are not easily acquired. Further, if he is fraudulently claiming them he can easily be checked. A number of people on MWO seem to have tried the man and found him guilty.

The paper you have cited Suppression of alcohol dependence using high-dose baclofen: a self-case report - Thomas - 2012 - Progress in Neurology and Psychiatry - Wiley Online Library looks very much to have been copied from the excellent collection of alcohol/baclofen related facts http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FSCemjttDvw[/video]]The Baclofen 4 Alcoholism Handbook - 'Cure' Your Alcoholism with Baclofen - YouTube

                    Same guy, Colin.

The fact that he has a history here has very little bearing on the fact that he continues to help people in a really positive and profound way. He was a drunk. He's not anymore. His history here has to do with a very specific situation and some very specific people. Again, it has very little bearing on the present. (Not that I am belittling his mistakes. Or the profound impact of them. Or the profound, deep and painful wounds that are left.)

And the fact that he makes money (apparently a lot of money? But I doubt it.) helping people with baclofen is something I can totally understand. And frankly, support.

Thank God you said that, I was beginning to think I'd slipped into an alternate universe where where it was wrong to make a living. Does Phil help alcoholics no longer drink alcoholically? That's the only question I consider relevant. I have no knowledge of anything that may or may not have happened in the past regarding him and this forum. It's history. Let's look to the future.

                          Meeting Phill

I thought I would add my own thoughts. Ive been reading mywayout for a long time and found it very interesting.
Im a psychiatric nurse with a bad drink problem. All due to anxiety and self doubt and low self esteem. Ive lost my wife and children and home and job through it.
There is clearly a lot of excellent people here, and a lot of friendship and support. But I do have concerns about the “pseudo-medical” advice handed out.
After years of failure with AA, and taking Campral, I finally lost my nursing registration.
Desperately I trawled the internet and came across baclofen4alcoholism. I had seen bad stuff written about Dr Phill here, but thought this might be my last chance so, with reservations, I phoned him. To be honest, I couldn’t believe it. He answered personally and we had a long chat. He was so friendly and open: even about what had happened to him. Ive been under a lot of doctors and “alcoholism specialists”, but this really was like talking to someone who really understood.
As he says “it takes one to know one”.
I started under the whole of his excellent programme about 3 months ago. He told me that it would all get a bit boring after about 6 or 8 weeks because he was sure he would get me well by then. I didn’t believe a word, but it was my last chance.
And he was right. I have followed his programme fully. I send him a diary every day and speak to him at 4pm every day. He has always read my diary by then and manipulated my Baclofen accordingly.
After 6 weeks, I was on 120mg taken at the best times of day for me. The last 6 weeks has been “boring”!!!! I have no cravings, but occasional thoughts that I can easily control. I still go to the pub, but it is for the social aspect, not to get drunk.
My grown up children cant believe that they have got their “dad back”. They have never seen me so well and in control.
Im now so well that I am applying to have my registration reinstated, and Dr Phill is doing all he can to help that happen.
Everybody is entitled to their own opinion, but I cant speak too highly about him.

Im doing a PhD in astrophysics and me and Dr Phill talk about a lot of things.
He sees obesity as very similar to alcoholism and I think he's right.
His program uses food as a drug to help beat the drink problem. And it works.
The problem is that addiction to one substance or activity can more easily lead to addiction to another. The wisdom of the addiction industry is that if you are trying to stop cocaine, alcohol, or whatever , don't think you can get away with a different drug. I am inclined to agree with their opinion.

Replacing over-eating with a predisposition to alcoholism is very questionable advice. If Phill's advice is simply to enjoy good food then I don't have a problem but if he thinks being seriously overweight is a viable alternative to the bottle.....
