Controlling Enjoying my Drinking with Baclofen

A little history about me: I'm the alcoholic who has tried every imaginable remedy to quit drinking, including almost a decade of AA. Nothing worked. Yes, I've been to hospitals; became well-acquainted with Librium for detox, and have made the rounds to recovery homes.

I've resigned my fate to a life that must necessarily include alcohol. So how to live a life with alcohol, sans the misery that accompanies heavy drinking? I read "The end of my addiction," and decided to try Baclofen. Fortunately, I have two fractured vertebra, so I was able to cajole my Doc into prescribing me 60Mg Baclofen for "extreme spasms and pain as a result of my broken back. And no, Doc, I don't want narcotics; I don't wanna get hooked. I'll only accept a script for Baclofen." The lie worked, and am now placed on the 60Mg.

After experimenting with the drug, I found a regimen that has enabled this diehard alky to manage his drinking; nothing worked before, including management that included benzodiazepines.

What I used to do: I'd wake up shaking, thirsty, and miserable, and need drinks right away. After pounding those, I'd excercize superhuman efforts at willpower to not drink for another three hours. The three hours would come, and with it, massive alcohol consumption. I'd keep drinking like this until I passed out, late at night. This went on for years/decades.

What i now do: I take the full 60Mg of Baclofen about two hours after I awake. This dosage reduces (but does not eliminate) EtOH cravings for about the first six hours I'm awake. I then drink three drinks at the seventh hour. I wait four more hours and drink three more. This is nowadays all I ever drink in a given day. Over the past year, I haven't had a single hangover, nor have I had the shakes. I now drink coffee every morning, something I could never do when drinking without Baclofen (I also take 30Mg Mirtazepine for my depression).

Baclofen merely attenuates and reduces cravings; it does not eliminate them. Baclofen serves to give me additional willpower to stay away from EtOH for the time the Baclofen is psychoactive (about six hours); I still have to excersize a measured amount of willpower if I wish to avoid those morning drinks. However, Baclofen--partnered with my existing willpower--has been allowing me to control and enjoy my drinking. This is the 'Holy Grail' and great obsession of every abnormal drinker, and I finally found it!

It says this in the Big Book:
Physicians who are familiar with alcoholism agree there is no such thing as making a normal drinker out of an alcoholic. Science may one day accomplish this, but it hasn't done so yet.
For me, it appears that Science has at last accomplished this seemingly impossible feat!

How many of us here on these threads did just that? Some people think Ameisen deserves the Nobel prize and they might just be right.

Welcome to a lot of like minded addicts.

I think you might even be able to do better. I have to say at the higher doses I messes around with drink here and there. I just don't even get a high from it anymore. Just SE's. I really don't get much from anything. Odd med baclofen is.

That's what started my healing. A noble prize is the least her deserves. I'm so glad he was gifted the 3/4 million for research!

Thanks! It's why Dr L will 'scribe benzos also. He does not feel you will get addicted to them or get the "highs" most folks take them for.

Hey COS I may be right there with you... I'm off bac entirely right now, and still don't feel a high or nice buzz from drinking, just anxiety and withdrawal symptoms after getting drunk. So basically I'm not really drinking, since there's not much benefit (is there ever? :H). Few if any real cravings, either...

That's awesome. I am afraid to come off of it. I am up there high still at 220. I don't want the enjoyment to come back. When I do screw up all I do is get more SE's. Screwing up for me is like 4-5 drinks.

No buzz really at all. Very odd.

Glad it's working out for you!
