    The Sinclair Method / Naltrexone

Newbies nest suggested I join this thread as it seems inappropriate to discuss "drinking with Naltrexone" with people who are courageously trying to be AF. I understand very well but my goal is to stop drinking and many roads lead to Rome.
My attempt to be AF on Jan 1st was a total failure, as many previous attempts. It took me over a week to get 3 days AF then that was it. My husband drinks every evening at dinner so it's been difficult. So I did alot of research on The Sinclair Method (TSM) and decided to try and wanted to share the results with you.
First of all, I live in France and my GP easily gave me a prescription.
I researched excerpts from the book "The Cure for Alcoholism" by Dr. Roy Eskapa, most of the information on the Sinclair Method comes from this source. Did not buy because I didn't want anyone to see the title in my mailbox.
It is important to read because you must understand how you take the meds and drink to re-program your brain. I think it is a worthwhile investment but you can find the info on internet.
You can also get good information here...
Sinclair Method - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

I started with 25mg of naltrexone, 1 h before dinner/drinking time and drank the usual amount, maybe even a little more.
    Day 2 same
Day 3 same but drank less
Day 4 went up to 50 mg as I was not having any side effects except vivid dreams and minor stomach cramps.
Kept on with 50 and very careful to always take at least 1 h before drinking. Keeping a close account of consommation and effects using a diary.
Seems that the buzz or high and the desire for more drinks kind of diminishes little by little. So after a glass or two of wine, i just think 'ok, what now?' , finish my dinner and go do something else.
Then we went on a 4 day trip to town, friends, restaurants... and drinking, lunch and dinner but always taking the naltrexone. Now back home and we've decided to stop drinking TOGETHER. So no naltrexone. It's been quite easy. That huge urge around 7pm has gone and since my husband makes a big pot of milk thistle tea instead of opening a bottle of wine it helps.
BUT, we are going back to town in a few days for some dinners and I plan on taking the naltrexone and having some wine.
I hope that this will create a situation where the desire diminishes with time and I can carefully decide in advance if and when to drink, like a normal person.
Always have the naltrexone beforehand if you drink, or not drink at all!
This may work for me because although I've had a very hard time with many attempts to be AF, I am not such a heavy drinker.
Also, I find the idea that I can drink if I take the meds helpful because it prevents me from panicking and obsessing over the subject.
I would be happy to know about others experiences with TSM and will repost my progress.
Go as far as you can see.
When you get there, you'll see further.

    Hello, Mywayin,

I can understand the Nesters not wanting to have someone posting about drinking on their thread. Please don't take it as a slap, as an AFer, I have the same issue when others talk about moderating, etc, on the AF thread, purely because it starts the chatter in the brain about, well maybe I can do that, too. (Tried and tried and tried and tried to no avail.)

There are several here who use Naltrexone and I am hoping they jump in and give you some pointers, etc.

I wish you the best of luck in your way out. I have seen Naltrexone success stories and anything that helps one of us is a good thing.

I do know, NEVER drink without Naltrexone and do not take it if you are not going to drink. Seems rather simple.

      MyWayIn,
If you haven’t already checked out the TSM site, here is a link to it.

      thesinclairmethod.com • Index page

There is a wealth of information there on TSM and some very supportive members. I have been practicing TSM for about 18 months. During this time I have posted my progress on this forum, so if you would like to review it there it is under “Diver’s Progress”. Also if you have any specific question let me know and I will try to answer them for you.

Best of Luck on your TSM journey!

        Welcome Mywayin

Like you I couldn't handle abstanence, it just made me worse each time I tried it - and I put in some very good AF time (5-6 months several times, 2-3 months another couple of times) but the cravings were always there, and I would go bananas over it.

I've been using Naltrexone for almost 2 years now and experienced great success with it. I never drink without it and there have been times I've taken it and not drank. It took approximately 6-8 months for the cravings to go away completely but I have had the odd 'spike' during and after that time but I've never drank as much as I used to. Don't be afraid of drinking, abstenance was my perfect goal but I just couldn't do it so chose this slightly different route instead. It does confuse outsiders but as long as you get the required result(cravings and issues around alcohol gone) then it doesn't matter.
I used the Sinclair Method to beat my alcoholic drinking.

Drank within safe limits for almost 2 years

        AF date 22/07/13

Have been AF for 4 days, without naltrexone. For the first 2 days no cravings at all and I realise in retrospect that drinking wine every evening with dinner just becomes so habitual - cultural and not necessarily a need.
BUT, day 3 (and 3rd day without naltrexone) the craving came back! I plan to stay AF until Sunday and for 2 days while in town drink wine with naltrexone. I will go AF afterwards and be interested to see how the cravings are.
I am also taking vitamin and mineral supplements that are supposed to help reduce craving. There is alot of interesting information regarding the effect of alcohol on deficiencies and those deficiencies on alcohol craving. Some research suggests that drinking in the first place is a result of certain deficiencies !

I use Naltrexone although I dont use TSM I have a problem with drinking to get off drinking.

I am 20 days booze free using Naltrexone without TSM and it controls the cravings.

Although that is just one mans story!
If drinking is interfering with your work, you're probably a heavy drinker. If work is interfering with your drinking, you're probably an alcoholic.

                            Hello Naltrexone Brothers and Sisters,

I, too, am about to commence on that path having tried total abstinence several times and failed (maximum 2 months but actually put on weight as I allowed myself cakes and chocolate and other stuff I would normally not touch, as a reward).
I suppose what I really want is to be as normal as I can be. By that I mean drink when it's appropriate and don't make a spectacle of myself. I had a bit of a trip-up over the weekend and am anxiously awaiting my tablets.

Good luck to everyone, talk soon.
