    Have you had genetic analysis?

I got my spit test back from 23andme.com(cost 150usd). They provide some genetic analysis on our problem.

I have been using sinclair method - but its not going well for me, i initially had some success but there was a gap due to a supply issue. The method isnt working well for me now at 50mg.

    On the results

I have one gene that confers a 1.2 times chance of alcoholism and another with a 1.35 times higher then standard chance of alcoholism. Not good news for me.

I also do not have the naltrexone "good response" gene which gives x5 times chance of good results.

Wonder if anybody else has gone down this road.

    Hello Blue:

I have never had a "spit" test so I can't speak to that. You may already know you have a problem, so what is this test going to do for you that you don't already know? Maybe you are not giving NAL a fair enough chance to work. If nal doesn't work for you, try Baclofen. I'm AF because of it. Good luck in your journey and keep reading and posting.

Baclofen is actually dangerous when im driving. I have tried it. I am afraid I would kill someone behind the wheel on it.

I'm nearly 9 months into TSM and for the most part its been great. I started to wobble about a month ago but I can definitely tell its working. I felt it from day one. Before it if I wanted to get drunk I could at the drop of a hat. Now I have to really push it. To be honest though, I'd have liked it to be game over at this stage. It never really touched my cravings from the off but it did stop me in my tracks (most of the time) from getting out of control.

Where I went wrong slightly with TSM was trying to speed things up and letting myself just go with it. I'm now battling for AF days as I've gotten in the habit of drinking everyday. I was never really an everyday drinker before hand although I was getting there.

Regarding genetics, I do't know much about them. I do remember reading somewhere about it though. It does seem interesting. I come from a long line of drinkers but I try not to use that as an excuse as there's many in my family who just aren't fussed either.

Baclofen is the next step for me. Maybe in the next month or so. I'm lucky that I can take a bit of time off work. I plan to dive straight in at a high dose and hopefully catch a break pretty early. I'd be a lot more wary if I'd to drive or be on the ball at work like a doctor or whatnot.

I've not had the gene test, I did respond very quickly to TSM.

One thing that's definite with TSM is the need to be consistent, gaps where you drink without Naltrexone result in readdiction fairly quickly. I've not drunk alcohol without Nal in the entire almost 2 years since I started using it and I do not intend to do that at any time in the future. Luckily my cravings were soon under control so I could decide not to drink if in a situation where I'd forgotten my dose (does happen), possibly not so easy if you still have that drive within you.
I used the Sinclair Method to beat my alcoholic drinking.

Drank within safe limits for almost 2 years

          AF date 22/07/13
