Antabuse question - need dose help

    Hi all,

I just bought Antabuse from an online pharmacy - 500 mg pills. I'm thinking of taking half a pill every day for the first week, then half a pill 2-3 times a week thereafter.

Does that sound OK to those more familiar with it?

I'm also planning to get a blood work-up and tell my doctor (I just don't want it on my permanent record).
Well it's all right now. I've learned my lesson well. You see you can't please everyone, so you've got to please yourself.

Hi Siren - I'm taking Antabuse prescribed by my doctor. I'm on one 200mg tablet every day and have been prescribed this level for up to six months. I have to see my doctor once a month to check everything's OK and get my next prescription. I've also been prescribed Thiamine and Vitamin B tablets which you can buy over the counter - apparently this helps the body when taking AB.

Someone on this site recommended always taking your AB in the morning when your mindset and resolve is at its most positive - and I would second this. For the first couple of weeks when the craving is really bad it's easy to be tempted not to take it (even though it takes over a week to get out of your system).

Good luck - Antabuse has changed everything for me. Its like the option to drink has been completely removed from my life and so I don't need to waste another minute debating with myself as to whether I should or shouldn't, Oh go on just one etc etc. You CANNOT - so just move on and get on with it!!
Never put off to tomorrow what you can achieve today!

Vit B and thiamin are regularly prescribed for any alcoholic, often when quitting because alcohol abuse depletes the body of vit B, so I'm not so sure it's something specific to the AB.
I used the Sinclair Method to beat my alcoholic drinking.

Drank within safe limits for almost 2 years

        Hi Siren!

I would take the 500mg per day for one week, then take half the pill every day there after. Antabuse has literally saved my life...I am happy that you are able to take it too! Let me know how it goes.

Thanks UK - wasn't sure why he was so adamant that I should take them - but would highly recommend - my hair and skin has never glowed so much and I've only been taking for three weeks (of course that could also be to do with the fact that I'm no longer poisoning myself with alcohol!!)

Hi K9! Thanks for the advice! You can ignore the PM. I'm a little scared to take that much as I'm doing this on my own - not with my doctor. I am going to see him but couldn't get in until May 17. I've been doing a lot of research and my liver still hurts a little.

I just took my first pill. I did cut it in half, because I'm not sure when my last drink was last night and I'm not sure what side effects I'll experience. If nothing happens and I feel OK then I will take the other half in the morning and then a 500 mg pill on Thursday. I'll stay on 500 for a week and then go back down to 250 every day or every other day.

Whew - I'm really looking forward to this working!!
