    GENERIC TOPAMAX?

Is there a generic (less expensive) Topamax? If so, is it just as effective?

    GENERIC TOPAMAX?

Hi Jade, I'm not sure which country you're posting from, but I live in the USA. I checked the Wal-Mart Pharmacy list of generic medications, which I've found to be pretty comprehensive, and Topamax is not on there, so I'm going to guess that it is not available as a generic. I can empathize because I'm on Campral, and even with insurance it is $$$.
In the middle of my life's journey, I found myself in a dark wood, as I had lost the straight path. It is a difficult thing to speak about, how wild, harsh and impenetrable that wood is. Just thinking about it recreates the fear. It is scarcely less bitter than death, but in order to tell of the good that I found there, I must tell of the other things I saw there. --Dante, paraphrased

      Hi Jade555 & :welcome:,

There is a generic formula. Topiramate. I think the brand, Topamax lost it's patent back in 09. I don't know personally if it's as effective. I take only the brand name. I'm fortunate that I have good Ins & use my mail order benefits, making it affordable.

It was explained by my doubly board certified MD, here in the US there are fillers in generic drugs. An 80/120% cap. Now I take generic for my thyroid, so I'm not opposed to generic drugs.

You could ask the folks on the Topa board. Also under best of boards there are archives under medical, think under long termers, or general I remember reading people were taking the brand & it worked well for many, but this was before the patent expired.

I think somebody on the current Topa ~ friendship thread ordered from River pharmacy, put in an anonymous Dr's name & they don't even check. I think there are 2 or 3 other off shore pharmacies that people have been successful with. Scroll back this meds forum, if you wish.

Topmax was Rxd for other diagnoses, but it can help with cravings by calming an excited brain. It works on GabaA, not GabaB like Baclofen. Frankly, I don't think I'd be alive today with out it! I could only get so far in my sobriety ~ recovery utilizing many other methods.

"The amino acid L-glutamate is now recognized as the major excitatory neurotransmitter in the central nervous system"

As for your other ? on another thread about how many capsules are in OTC Gaba. Not sure as you can't see the quantity. I think 60, just from pricing. You can call the #, or ping admin.

Tho, honestly I don't think plain old OTC Gaba crosses the blood brain barrier & may be a waste of $. But, I'm not a Dr.

I wish you the very best on finding your "Way Out". Hope to see ya around.

      Take Care,

      WF
