I went through treatment recently, was given a script to Campral after the detox part. Starting taking it and know myself and could tell it does work (I was doing therapy, meetings multiple times a day as suggested and all of that and then some). Of course while I notice less cravings, actually no cravings, that one single split thought that we all know too well got to me recently. I started a four day binge and stopped taking my Camp. I am tapering off now and doing so-so. I am almost done with the taper but was wondering of any experiences anyone may have had while taking Camp while drinking, lightly drinking, tapering, once in a month drinking??? I'm just curious because I know I read somewhere not to take it until AFTER you are completely off of alcohol. I have another day, possibly two, three, four at the most of tapering if all goes well. I'm just trying to get an idea about starting it back up tomorrow???

Campral while drinking
Hey Woody!
I've taken Campral in the past. It says on the literature that comes with the drug that you can still drink whilst taking Camp but it may have an impact on how effective it is.
All the best.It is not what we do, but how much love we put into the doing.

Campral while drinking
Thank you nicelife, I just found it too and yup, the label was where I read it! I'm thinking a taper might be different, but I am not a Dr. and do not know for sure (heck I'm not sure anyone has even done a full study on it yet), so I am going to wait until until my first full day off to be completely safe and get the full use out of it. Thank you again

Campral while drinking
Hi Woody, I'm on campral right now and am over two weeks sober. I credit campral for basically making me indifferent to alcohol. I can be around people drinking and not crave a drink. I am also highly motivated not to drink. I don't think campral magically trips an off switch, but I think if you are motivated to stay abstinent, it gives you a little extra nudge without which you might cave. My doc recommended I start campral right away, even while I was experiencing acute withdrawal symptoms, but after I had stopped drinking. He said to keep taking campral even if I end up drinking, but I haven't (nor do I plan to), so I can't tell you what campral is like with alcohol. My doc didn't come out and say it, but like nicelife basically said, the impression I get is that if you drink on campral, you're basically wasting your doses.
Good luck with your taper. I think campral is a great drug. It's not mood altering, the side effects are minimal (the only one I had was diarrhea, and that only lasted a few days), and you can start and stop the drug at will without having to taper. In the middle of my life's journey, I found myself in a dark wood, as I had lost the straight path. It is a difficult thing to speak about, how wild, harsh and impenetrable that wood is. Just thinking about it recreates the fear. It is scarcely less bitter than death, but in order to tell of the good that I found there, I must tell of the other things I saw there. --Dante, paraphrased

Campral while drinking
I also found Campral helpful at one stage in the past. In addition to what has already been said, I'd like to point out that it can take about a week for the drug to reach maximum levels and effectiveness. This is what I have read in the past anyway. Since it doesn't react badly with alcohol, you could be better off starting it ASAP, so that once you taper off you already have a high level of Campral in your system. That could better protect you from urges to drink.
