Please help me to sleep. PLEASE!!!

I need to find a way to sleep.

I can fall asleep, no problem.

I work so hard. I get up at 04:30. I push myself physically through the day. I eat well. I take all the supplements I need. I take/have taken every sleep aid I can think of. I just can not sleep for longer than 3 hours at a time.

I sleep for between 1 and 3 hour periods. I wake and eventually sleep again. I get 6, 7, 8 or even more hours in total, I just can't get an uninterrupted sleep. In the last 2 years I think I have slept for a full, solid 8 hours only twice and I think it is killing me. To not sleep for an uninterrupted period of 6 or more hours is really unhealthy, for all sorts of reasons.

Please give me some ideas. This is what I've tried/taken/do every day:

    Exercise
    Melatonin
    Z.M.A.
    Tyrosine
    Trytophan
    5-HTP
    A.D.s
    Xanax and other Benzos
    Gabapentin
    Benadryl
    Unisom
    Herbal sleep aids
    Physically exhaust myself.
Mentally exhaust myself ( that's a given and a constant since I was a small child)
Emotionally exhaust myself (again, a given)
Sexually exhaustion (Nah, tried that (FREQUENTLY!), doesn't help)
    Alcohol

There are probably other things I have tried, which now escape me.

Please, any suggestions you can make I will gratefully accept. If it's a really good suggestion I may even send you an original artwork that is almost certainly guaranteed to become really valuable after my death (which may be imminent if I don't get some good sleep soon). If it's a really REALLY good suggestion I will send you a vial of my man-goo which will be absolutely priceless after I die and my works become world-renowned.

    Please help me.

I know you're suffering, IFul, and feeling the effects of not getting enough rest. So this might be more than unhelpful--it might just piss you off. But I hope that's not the case.

There's a great deal of evidence that the uninterrupted 8 hours of sleep is a historical anomaly--virtually nonexistent until the industrial revolution. Because the sun is down about 1/2 the day, and you can't really do anything else, people would go to sleep early, wake up, and then have (what seriously was referred to as) their "second sleep." And in between they'd read or whatever, and some 17th century equivalents of the modern day life guides suggested that it was better to wait until after the first sleep to have sex. Because you'd be rested.

So I'm only saying this to maybe take some of the anxiety-edge off of not getting a solid, uninterrupted 8 hours. Any way to restructure your day and shoot for 4 and 4? Maybe an hour of doing something in between?

Take baclofen before you go to bed and when you wake up. One other theory is you should have a baked potato before bedtime because you might be waking up due to sugar lows and the potato starch is slow burning, If you look at Nightol type formulations they are just sugar and vitamins so maybe a dose of multivitamins too, can't hurt. Also just take a melotonin at bed time. I got it from Biovea and go a good night's sleep with it. The rest of it is junk. I you can't sleep then read a book and listent to some music. I used to be on 24 hour call out so I can say that it is possible to get used to being woken up every night of your life for years. It won't kill you an you get used to it. That is all I can usefullly say.

In addiction, suppression of symptoms should suppress the disease altogether since addiction is, as he observed, a "symptom-driven disease". Of all "anticraving medications used in animals, only one - baclofen - has the unique property of suppressing the motivation to consume cocaine, heroin, alcohol, nicotine and d-amphetamine"

I am with Stuck on this. Since I got sober I usually wake after 4 hours and then go back to sleep an hour or so later. I am actively trying to go to sleep earlier to accommodate this change.
It is very cultural, I observe that many of my Chinese clients have no set sleep patterns and will often be active in the wee hours of the morning.

I am also working on the same attitude to food, as given in my signature ' eat when you are hungry, sleep when you are tired'.

Perhaps you could use the night waking periods to draw.....you have a gift and many artists are at their most inspired at night.

Sorry your suffering so much with this but you didnt say how you actually feel. You are getting enough sleep and its not the quantity of sleep that matters anyway but the type of sleep. I didnt know the history that stuck talked about but I do feel and function much better when I can have my second sleep. To my knowledge it doesnt effect your health getting multiple shorter sleeps as its natural for the body to go through rythems. If you are tired during the day then it is a problem but if not then Id say dont worry. I dont know of any med that will consistently work for sleep without making you drowsy the next day which you wouldnt want.

I got nothing. Except sleep apnea. Is it physical? Do they have Cpap machines in your part of the world? They give them out like candy here, because they're expensive and insurance companies cover it. For the insured, anyway.

              Helpful? Doubt it. Sorry Murph.

I'll second that, remeron being my #1 pick for any form of insomnia.
Another one to consider is trazodone.

I wake every 2-3 hours on average and have read this is normal - the body operates on a 3 hour sleep cycle. I turn over and am back to sleep within 20 minutes no problem.

I agree with UK Blonde - I tend to sleep in increments of 90 mins - will wake up, and can usually go back to sleep. 90 minutes is the sleep cycle. so as long as I get sleep in 90 minute increments I don't worry how much I sleep - when I used to work shifts, sometimes i would sleep for only 4 1/2 hours and still feel fine. You said that sometimes you sleep for 3 hours - so maybe you are doing better than you thought? Do you ever go back to sleep after you have woken up? if you can sleep for that 90 mins, you should be okay .... just my opinion of course.

                        hugs, sun XX

If I recall, Leonardo da Vinci used to sleep in snatches, but throughout the 24 hour cycle, so that might explain your prowess with a pencil.

Funnily enough, or not, depending on your point of view, it is 3:11 in the morning as I'm typing this, and I've just got out of bed after a 4 hour nap. It irritates me a little, but c'est la vie. I hope it's not killing me, but I don't think it is. That said, one of the markers for longevity is the ability to sleep for at least 8 hours or more, but I figure that although those people might live longer, they have been asleep for most of it, so it evens out in the end. Small consolation as you shuffle of this mortal coil early though.

I have nothing for you, I am sorry to say. Perhaps you should try design a helicopter in your waking hours?

This may be off the mark, LoveLife but I have observed that very successful people, artists, entertainers, business people or athletes all confess that they only need a few hours of sleep each night. In fact I think it's number 5 in the Seven Habits of highly effective people...
