    Can anyone help? Baclofen

Hi I was reading older posts and Dr. L was mentioned as the go to guy for Baclofen. I have tried Kudzu and Naltrexone ( neither helped) I really would like to try the Baclofen route. I definately have anxiety issues so I hope it helps with that too! I prefer to email the doc instead of call ( not really a phone person...I know I'm a weird one!) I would greatly appreciate it if someone has it the can send it to me privately. I was also wondering if anyone could tell me what to expect from the doctor as far as exam, discussion of problem etc., how long it takes to have a script sent, how difficult it is for refills? Sorry so many questions.
    Thanks for any help,
( I figure if this works for me then I'll have my husband do it too!)

I'm sorry, I don't have the e-mail address or I would PM you. Dr. Levin pretty much works exclusively by phone consultation, although if you can get to Chicago, he will see you in person as well. I think he is charging somewhere in the neighfborhood of $140 per consultation. He is very easy to talk to and I was a little nervous about contacting him the first time, too. If you do call, try to get him at home Monday - Friday between 5 and 8pm Chicago time.

The prescription process is very awkward. I printed out Dr. L's name, address, phone number and what he prescribed on a sheet with my word processor and took it to my pharmacy. They contacted him to verify the prescription and I picked it up a couple of days later. That all sounds easy enough, but you really have to get your nerve up to walk in and do it the first time. I got a lot of judgement from the pharmacist, but he gave me the pills and that is what I went there for.

Thank you so much for writing back to me! I live in the east coast so I will definately try next week. Do you know if insurance covers any of it or if I should bother with that at all. Iknow what you mean about pharmacies tho. It would be nice if they would mind their own business and just tend to their work! Nobody needs someone else to judge them I think we do enough judging of ourselves.

Hahaha. I had my first dr L pickup the other day. Oh man I got some bad reactions from the pharmacy but whatever...I got the pills. I got the impression on the phone he did not want to know too much. So I did not try and tell him any more.

Bird, insurance will cover it, I suspect, but I wouldnt use it. I went to Walmart. It is on their list of $5 pills for no insurance. If u get a lot it is more. I paid 20 for 180 pills with no insurance. Look I totally get the phone thing if it is the same as me. I tend to get real panicky on the phone with new people. Panic I think is part of our disease. My view was he is a psychiatrist and it is safe to panic with him. I'm sure he has seen it before....especially dealing with us.

I was curious if his name is Leh-vun or Leh-veen. Anyways he answered to Leh-vun. I just said my name and told him I got his number from a forum. I get the feeling he does not want alcoholism mentioned. I just said I am taking baclofen and am going to end up running out of pills. He cut me off and said go to the pharmacy, tell them what u want and tell them to call. Just suck it up at the pharm...it is uncomfortable but worth it.

          Hi, Littlebluebird,

I ended up needing Dr L also and after what I read here I was nervous to call too. For me it went like this:

I called and we set an appt for the next morning after he got my name.

When I called the next day at the correct time he asked if I had an appt. then he asked me to call him back in 3 minutes. I did that and his # was busy. He called me back. I was already on bac and had flipped my switch but he wouldn't hear of it. I let him talk. He asked if I wanted him to mail the script. I said yes and he addressed it while we were on the phone. I took it to the pharmacy and had no trouble.

He did put the billing codes on his receipt and I believe he offered more along those lines, but I'm not insured so it didn't matter.

Take a deep breath and make the call. Good luck!

              Talltry,

Call Dr. Levin at home. I was told a couple of years ago to call him between 7:00 - 9:00 Central Standard Time. I called him right at 7:00 p.m. Here is his number: 312-642-5803.

Oh, I have a question. What if I have not yet taken Baclofen? Do I mention that? Will it make a difference? Thanks!

                    Little,

You're not a freak with your fears of calling. I had them too. At one point when we had no water in our house I bought gallons of water so we could get by instead of calling the nice guy who worked on our water system! That's freaky!

Thanks for giving me a giggle! I now can say I'm not the only"cheese who stands alone!"
I laugh that a friend of mine gets a kick out of the fact that shopping in new grocery stores overwhelms me...We walked into Trader Joe's one day, I think we were there about 3 mins. And I told her I had seen enough and had to leave...she started laughing and said I love your oddities they make you fun! ( I felt like saying just try being me ...yikes!)

Hi LittleBlueBird... just wanted to drop in and say that I totally understand and share your anxieties about phone calls (not to mention seemingly quiet/yet-unanswered forum posts)...

Just wanted to say- I get it, I undertand it. You're not alone, and you're great!

                            Thank so much Skullbaby!
You are very sweet and I have to say you just made my day!
My question is why when the person on the other end can't see you and may not even know who you are it is still intimidating? I laugh to think I had to speak to a group of preschoolers about dental hygiene. ( dental hygienist) And even those little ones made me nervous at first! All they really wanted was to see the puppet I brought and get their new toothbrushes! Too funny!

Yeah, I hear you. My theory is that even though the person can't see you, you're still putting yourself "out there", sharing your ideas and personality with speech... and those of us that have fears of judgement, the anxiety can be activated...
Anyway, I hate talking on the phone and avoid it as much as I can. I much prefer to type... which can be both a more comforting way to communicate, but can also be a crutch that causes other forms of communication to atrophy. So I think it's ultimately good to practice social skills (especially when sober). Maybe I'll join Toastmasters
