    Vivitrol

I know this is mostly a baclofen forum, but I am starting vivitrol tomorrow.

I only mention this because my addiction specialist MD mentioned that baclofen might be an option if vivitrol and some other stuff doesn't work. I mentioned that I thought it was odd he brought it up cuz I go to this wacky message board where people swear by it and conspire to find docs to prescribe etc. he said its still not officially approved for alcoholism but gaining popularity in the addiction community.

Also he thought TSM was a load of crap.

    Hey, Turfbuilder,

Welcome. You sound like you have a good doc. I don't know anything about vivitrol, but I know a fair bit about bac. I'm sure someone will come along and talk vivitrol with you. I just wanted to welcome you.

Vivitrol is an injection which provides constant dose naltrexone VIVITROL? (naltrexone for extended-release injectable suspension)
Treating Alcoholism and Addiction with Vivitrol

Some say it's very good, but the general consensus is that it's not as useful as the specific targeted dose taking a 50mg tablet 1 hour before drinking does. The idea with TSM, assuming the OP is not going abstenant is to break the link between endorphins(buzz) and alcohol intake. Having the dose delivered immediately before you drink makes (or breaks)that association.

If however the OP is going for complete abstenance then that's a different matter - some people find just having Naltrexone in your system is enough to kill the desire for alcohol.

Hopefully the links will provide some more info for anyone who is interested.
I used the Sinclair Method to beat my alcoholic drinking.

Drank within safe limits for almost 2 years

        Vivitrol

        Hello!

        Hi Turf,
I took Vivitrol injections in 2010. I took them for 3 months, while I was also in an outpatient program. So while I did feel some lessening of cravings, I did stop taking the injections. The desire to drink was still present. At that time I managed to string together 5 months alcohol free. ( Plus they were over 1000 dollars per shot! ).. So I would say from my experience Vivitro was only somewhat effective. I have been on Baclofen for 10 months and have drank one time. It has truly taken away the compulsion and obsessive thoughts of drinking. It has been night and day, and I have been stable on 80 mg per day.
I have also tried Campral multiple times ( did not work for me at all ), Antabuse ( which I always drank on while taking and got REALLY sick ), and Topa ( no effect ). Baclofen has worked best for me. I hope the Vivitrol works for you, but remember there are other options. Best of luck to you!
