    Meds and Breastfeeding?

I realize this might sound like a strange question, but does anyone know of any of the anti-craving meds that are ok to take while breastfeeding?

I'm meeting with a doctor on friday and I really dont want to have to stop breastfeeding to get help with this. I have already been prescribed Librium for withdrawel (which i dont think i need) and I just can't bring myself to take it because I cant breastfeed or save any of my milk if I take it.

BTW, I've been scoping the forums for a couple weeks now and this is my first post... couldnt sleep last night because I kept thinking about asking this here. Also, my dreams were devestating... talk about really high anxiety...

Anyways, any info would be great. Oh, and I've looked up a few but not all of them... if anyone has personal experience, it would be great. My baby has breastmilk, formula, and baby food at 8 months old.

    Thanks!

    Meds and Breastfeeding?

I'm not sure about other medications, but I don't think baclofen is recommended for breastfeeding mums. I remember reading that somewhere, so it might not be right, I'll see if I can find what I read and confirm it.

The translated Dutch information is "Only use baclofen after getting your doctor's approval".
      A bit mealy-mouthed but still ....

        "Baclofen Breastfeeding Warnings
Baclofen is excreted into human milk in very small amounts. One lactating woman received a single 20 mg dose of baclofen and 0.1% of that dose was recovered in her breast milk. However, the effect on her infant, if any, was not reported and no other information is available concerning the effect of baclofen in breast-fed infants. Baclofen is considered compatible with breast-feeding by the American Academy of Pediatrics."

Source: Baclofen Use During Pregnancy and Breastfeeding | Drugs.com

        "Summary of Use during Lactation
Limited information indicates that baclofen has low levels in milk and would not be expected to cause any adverse effects in breastfed infants, especially if the infant is older than 2 months. Monitor newborn infants for signs of sedation."

Keep in mind that the above information is probably based on NORMAL use of baclofen and not reflects on HIGH DOSE baclofen.

However, according to the info above, a woman that would take 200 mgs of baclofen, theoretically would excrete 0.2 mg baclofen in the mother's milk. I doubt if that would be dangerous for an infant, but as Colin says: Get your doctor's approval. Don't take any risk.

By the way, taking baclofen while pregnant will give some more complications. (same source).

            Thank you!

This is so good. I was able to get an earlier appt with the chemical dependency meds doctor for this afternoon and it will be good that I have something in mind that might work.

Thanks again for your inputs... its hard admitting that I even need anti-craving meds while breastfeeding... but it is still the case and I'm ready to make this change NOW.

            :thanks:
