Antabuse. Can mine be a placebo?

So I took Antabuse the first time today. It was prescribed 2 years ago. For some reason I wanted to drink to see how I'll I would be. Nothing.

    It's an oblong white pill with a Greek "Z". (Backwards Z) and 28. It's 250mg.

This was prescribed by my long time psycharist. He's retired now.

I tired doing a pill id but nothing came up.

    What's going on here?!?

I would be very, very careful experimenting like that. I hightly doubt that you were given a placebo. And I read that the shelf life for antabuse is about 5 years.
I know that I had a reaction when I drank after I had been off the pill for 5 days. So, I wouldn't mess around. I know people that have had VIOLENT reactions.
    Good luck to you.

Antabuse. Can mine be a placebo?

I have never had antabuse, but I have read enough people that took it and THEN drank....and I can assure you.....as much as I like dancin' with the devil, and going Mach II with my hair on fire..I would never try that.

That reaction from what I understand is like the worst thing ever....and then worse. Id say either A. You have Rasputin's stomach, or B. You got very lucky. Just my two! But I totally understand the curiosity side of the whole thing

It takes a few days to build up in your system, which is why it stays in your system for so long. Its not like a pain killer. However not a good start is it popping one then drinking, a bit like playing russian rouleltte.
Its easier not to start than stop

Why in gods name would you take it then drink? Part of the beauty of antabuse is the fear of not knowing what horrible effects you may suffer. You took a pretty old pill, even if the shelf life is technically 5 yrs a pharmacist would probably tell you to throw it away after a year. You can see your pill if you google "antabuse generic oblong" and then select images, btw.

Hi JRons, I can only wonder why you did that, it is a pretty weird thing to do. I have however heard of people having been prescribed it and then advised to drink a bit as a one off to feel how awful it will make them to put them off doing it again, was that what you where doing or where you just very bored and couldn't find any daytime tv to watch.

I have never had a bad bad experience with it but have drank too soon after it once and did get sick just not drastically like its supposed to say it makes you. Ive never heard any first hand experience from anyone who has had the bad reactions but do just have to go along with the warnings.

Either take it and don't drink or don't take it. The whole idea is that the two don't mix.

It sounds crazy but I wanted to feel awful so I won't be tempted to even touch or think of drinking again...

Take it to your pharmacists. They will tell you what it is. My Hubby drank a small amount about two weeks after starting ab. It was not fun. He didn't have to go to emergency room, but he will never do that again. It really does work. Good luck and hang in there.
No matter how far you go or how fast you run, you can't get away from yourself. ....said at an AA meeting. It stuck with me.

You seem to have a strange way of looking at it to me. I take AB to use as a tool to stop me drinking through making me ill so my choice is take the pill and dont drink. You seem to be to curious as to how ill and how long for, almost like your building your self up to drinking on it and thats not what its for just drink without using it and forget AB find another way to quit is my advice

Hi JRons I too am still confused by what you are doing somewhat. I get tho that you want to know how bad you will feel but why do you need to? If you take it again and drink and nothing happens then what would be the point of having done that, you would probably find out then that you have dud tablets but that's about it. If you do take it, drink and get very ill then what would that do, would you continue to take it knowing you absolutely cant drink so not do it or just not take it when you want to drink. I do kind of understand why you want to do this but it is dangerous, apart from the feeling very ill you could possibly cause irreversible damage to your body so really don't bother, doing it intentionally is pretty stupid idea. Most people nowadays take it knowing they should not drink on top of it to get rid of the should I shouldn't I argument as they just accept they cannot drink.

What is your goal? Is it to stop drinking reduce or what.

I can vouch for all of these personally. It's really extremely unpleasant and I'm lucky I didn't give myself liver damage/failure.

It can put you in the ER or in a few cases, the morgue. Seriously. DON'T DRINK ON ANTABUSE.

Sounds like you're looking for some kind of aversion therapy such as Schick Shadel. That can definitely work, but drinking on Antabuse is NOT the way to do it, JRons- even if you avoid the liver damage/ER trip-- Using this method of making you sick as a deterrent, it may be more likely that next time you'll drop the Antabuse instead of the bottle, which would of course keep you right were you are, which you presumably are trying to change.

I'm not sure why that first dose didn't make you sick when you drank- much more likely that it's just expired early, not an outright placebo-- but that'd be the exception not the rule. My guess is that you took AB but then cravings got so intense that you're trying to drink asap? If so, believe me I been there... but it's not worth it man.
