    Thinking about Antabuse for Moderation

    Hey Spectrum,

How are you doing with your AF days? I just wanted to post that I agree with both Neo and Stuck, they have excellent points. I think I was irresponsible in my last post - it should have had some cautionary overtones along with the "go for it" attitude.

Neo, I do find that on my second night of weekend drinking the tolerance is up and the next day my mood is affected (but I'm also motivated to take my Monday AB pill as a consequence).

Stuck, you're right of course. Technically I am very far from moderating at this stage! Still drinking a full bottle of wine (although spaced over dinner and the evening rather than downed on an empty stomach before dinner like the old days..). Ideally I'd like to stop at 3 drinks. But hey, I'm an alcoholic, it's not an easy thing. Maybe I'll eventually decide to do the 30 days. Or go back to completely abstaining - I have over 5 years AF in the past - but at this point in my life, I'm not ready for either.

Spectrum, what I love about the AB is that it takes the question out of your mind, the internal debate is gone, about whether to be AF for the day or not.

As for my drinking 5 days after my popping the 125mg, my counselor and doctor know about it but aren't thrilled, just following me. They do however see it as being an improvement from my daily drinking of a bottle or more (sometimes two) of wine a day...

Hi all- I'm so glad you guys are finding AB as a good supplemental med to help-- if anyone's inclined to do more reading (albeit anecdotal) I've written much on my progress thread about my experiences with how I find AB to be really helpful etc.

I know you guys already know it, but thought it'd be worth reiterating that it's important to do liver checks via blood tests when on AB from time to time when you see a doctor. I try to do it quarterly. AB can be a bit hard on the liver and it's important to know how it's affecting you. Though I'd argue it's GOTTA be less hard on the liver than drinking alcoholically is, right? Either way, get that checked, liver health is crucial for obvious reasons.

FWIW, I've been taking AB nightly (half pills, aka 125mg) to make sure I don't have wiggle room to sneak drinks. Neo's method of M/W/F would also work well. There was a time I'd considered doing something like Gum's protocol of AB on Mon and drinking during weekends but I just found that I needed to not have hangovers anymore, I just lost too many days (especially weekends) to feeling so sick/depressed/anxious, as well as alienating friends and family with my obnoxious drinking behavior... that's just me though.

You sound just like me. Bottle of wine, no problem. I'm sure I could out drink men twice my size - always have been able to. Craziness.

Side note for everyone: It's important to remember different things, methods, thoughts, work for different people. One shoe does not fit all.

I have lost 4lbs since taking the pill. I know, I know, it's bound to be water weight but I DON'T CARE . I am happy to have it gone. Oddly, I'm not craving sugar (everyone says you will crave sugar) though I am eating fruit so maybe that's taking care of it. I didn't eat much fruit at all while drinking and I've never been a sugar craver though I am sure I am hypoglycemic.... Anyway, in combination with the alchohol stopping I am also doing a vegetable / fruit mostly - diet for a while. I figured out that drinking water with lemon, real maple syrup and cayenne pepper takes the place of wine/cocktails somewhat. At least I can feel it in my body so it's kind of a mocktail.

              and probably here

Oh, and no offense meant to anyone - different methods for different folks. What worked for me for 7 months, and I'm hoping will work again soon, is total abstinence from alcohol but to do that I go to bars almost daily and keep non-alcoholic beer and wine at home (less of the AF wine, because it tastes f**king horrible). And have *good* mocktails like AF mojitos when I can find them. Really, just find the right mix of things that work for you and I'm not knocking anyone for 3 or 4 glasses of wine on the weekends, if that's your goal - wish something like that would work for me.

no offense taken by me Stuck btw, thought your post was nicely put. Had me re-think my wording for those lurkers out there - made me realize I didn't want to be minimizing the risks of AB.

Going to bars daily while AF would be my undoing, different strokes for different folks for sure! lol!

I'm having a great second day AF, managed a quick run before work, feeling energized.

Yep, that's them-- most of the AB related info will probably be found in the first of those links. Thanks Stuck.

You could do that, but its imperative that you wait long enough because even if you are not symptomatic, acetyaldehyde is extremely toxic....5 days isn't long enough. For example, its 10 times more toxic to the testis than ethanol.

                            Did you try it?

I have taken antabuse twice. I'm taking baclofen, but titrating up and it feels like it's taking forever. I tried the antabuse because I didn't (and don't) want to drink. I don't know if it was the fact that no matter what I couldn't drink, but taking the antabuse seemed to make my cravings that much worse...I know it was a mental thing, or perhaps that my cravings were that bad and I just didn't know it because I drank everyday. Two times was enough for me to call off the experiment.

I have heard of quite a few people using antabuse while taking other medications to curb their cravings. Have you thought about doing that?
