I just did it pretty matter-of-factly.

"Yeah, so I'm taking between 3 and 4 times what the Physician's Desk Reference considers the maximum safe dose of this muscle relaxant that I self-prescribe and buy online from India or Germany or wherever."

"Oh. And why are you taking that?"

"Because I'm a raging drunk but everything you know about addiction and recovery is a myth propagated by the rehab industry, and this pill makes alcoholism go away usually."

"And how does that make you feel."

    "Pretty good, actually."

"That's great, so tell me more about your mother."

Both kind of. I have a few bottles of liquid left and some pills but wanted to get things in order to get pills faster.

La---it always goes back to the mom, right??!! Lol. I was just concerned they might refuse to treat me-which I guess would be fine.

No, they won't refuse money! My IM doc didn't bat an eye when I told her how much baclofen I'm on...most docs won't. Even in the ER.

You may have a better chance at getting a script from a GP b/c in the psych world, they like to push other drugs they get through pharmaceutical sales. Abilify, zoloft, the like...But you may be surprised. The worst that can happen is they turn your away.

I think talking with a psychologist would be great for your new journey. They're generally pretty open to new ideas...after all, the medical field is constantly learning and evolving. The more that baclofen is brought up, with good results...the more it will be studied.

Yourfriend, you might want your basic blood tests done first. The docs are most concerned of being liable for making things worse - if your kidneys and liver are in decent condition, the risk is much lower. Quick translation from the leaflet: dosing for children: titrate until effective, which usually falls in the range of 0,75 - 2 mg / kg BW. That's kind of against the handbook 100 mg limit. I'm 90 kgs / 200 lbs. and assume I can handle much more than you petite women. And I assume you're planning to go prepared, with all the necessary printouts with you.

edit: in the leaflet two sentences later it says: for children 10 or older the maximum is 2,5 mg/kg

                :thanks:
Thanks mandie and And. I do want to bring all the necessary print outs. I'm sure they are on the boards? Can someone point me in the right direction? Mandie, I'd like to see my GP and share my progress w Bac that I could never do on my own. I'd want to show her all the documentation, also

I got my script from my GP, although you get what the pharmacy has. She would only rx 30mg a day, and if I wanted more she would send me to an addictions doctor. Unfortunately it goes on your records if you use insurance.

Most relevant docs can be found in the first post. If you need university-level library access to download/print anything, let me know.

Naltrexone and Antabuse are the only two you should have to worry about with insurance. They are the only two that are prescribed solely for alcoholism. With bac you could have muscle spasms or for anxiety or whatever - and if your doc won't prescribe for that then f**k him he's an *ss.

Alcoholism was already on my medical record, so I had nothing to lose in trying to get bac prescribed specifically for that. I was able to find a psychiatrist willing to work with me, but it was after I switched and came back down quite a bit. I had been sober for about two months at that point, which no doubt helped my case immensely. Just wanted to let you know that this IS possible.

                        Good luck!

stuck..I hope that's true! I hope that doctors think twice before writing their notes that go on the final record. I had one doctor that looked at me and I thought, shit, I'm screwed!

We have to be better advocates for ourselves. I know in my case - especially when the anxiety is high - that's really, really difficult and I'm not very good at being assertive.

But it is ABSOLUTELY possible to be prescribed baclofen off-label for anxiety. I had one regular doc who agreed - after I made a point of asking and saying this is what I wanted - not to put alcoholism in my chart when I was going to see another doc/therapist (I forget). The doc's only stipulation was that I did tell the next person the real reason so they would have a complete picture for treating me.

Now that I think about it, I don't think I even went to the next doc, but that's not the point here.

Speak up for yourselves, people! We're doing nothing wrong, nothing dangerous, and as long as we're being responsible nothing even that out of the ordinary. We are taking a medication to treat a medical condition. So as long as you keep taking bac in that way, and not just popping handfuls whenever you feel like it and drinking on top of that, don't take any sh*t from docs, pharmacists, shrinks, anybody.

I got a script from a psychiatrist over a year ago. I had already started taking liquid, but wanted a script just in case. I brought in some info (which she didn't read). I told her also about what I'd read and sent her the link to the MRI video that is around somewhere. She wrote the script, no problem. But she is pretty open to off label prescribing. I have to go back to get another, higher script now. Taking 3 times as much as she prescribed. Should be an interesting conversation. But based on the fact that it works, I'm hoping it won't be an issue.
