    Ibogaine

Has anyone tried this for alcohol addiction? Just read something about it, and it's high success rate at curing a lot of addictions after a single session. Thought I'd throw it out there.

There are several threads here and in the holistic section about it.

Thanks, NE. I hadn't recalled seeing anything. I'll do a search.

          From Wikipedia...

"Ibogaine is a naturally occurring psychoactive substance found in plants in the Apocynaceae family such as Tabernanthe iboga, Voacanga africana and Tabernaemontana undulata. A psychedelic with dissociative properties, the substance is banned in some countries; in other countries it is used by proponents of psychedelic therapy to treat addiction to methadone, heroin, alcohol, cocaine, methamphetamine, anabolic steroids, and other drugs."

The use of psychedelics as treatment for addictions is an interesting topic. The fact that a lot of people are kicking addictions after one session with Ibogaine sounds pretty promising. It appears the subject has already been explored in other threads. I shall commence to exploring them for myself.

I would suggest that you already have investigated Ibogaine. Perhaps you should look up Dr. Mote Gabriel and his experience. I do believe their is a huge benefit -just not available to many of us.

ive read over the years that it has the effect of resetting your addiction and eliminating cravings for opiates and other addictions. i got interested until i read about the high risk of death when consuming this stuff. are there any studies at all behind it?

just yesterday, in comments in an article about ASAM conflicts of interest (crazy full obviously!)...
there were few people saying "ibogaine is the only thing that work for opiods addiction..."

I'm convinced that Baclofen is not the only drug that is ignored because is patent expired and works!!...
so i thought that maybe ibocaine could be that one for heroin but really no time to go more deep on subject, full time taken by understanding and find "proofs" that too many doctors knows that Bac works from 10/15 years but they ignore it.

One general thing is that there are 2 main "areas" of the brain affected by addiction (simplifying a lot obviously): ventral tegmental area -VTA from one side and nucleus accumbens -NA, from the other.
I'm don't have a medical formation so it can be not exact what i say, but simply check for: addiction + vta + na ... is full of pdf and docs to understand it better.
Opiates seems to affect both regions while ethanol affects only VTA.
There are studies that even says that Bac works for nicotine too, me i don't drink anymore but smoke same as before, maybe little less with electronic cigarettes but still high addicted to nicotine!
I imagine that this systems are not obviously closed and that modifying one will affects in some way even the other... don't know.

So thanks BetterAndBetter to write about it and keep us updated about your findings!

PS: just tried a quick search in Pubmed and...hmmm... there are few reports not so cool about safety anyway try yourself : ibogaine addiction - PubMed - NCBI

Ibogaine can be very effective for namely the use of opiates but only for about 6 months when the cravings start to arise again. Then you'd have to go for another round of it.

You also shouldn't take Ibogaine without a trained person to keep an eye on you. You do not know if you have an unknown medical problem that could turn the trip fatal. Your heart rate slows waaay down at points in the trip. So, if for some reason your heart and body can't handle that, you'll need someone to be able to get your breathing going.

You also shouldn't take Ibogaine on ANY medications. The interactions are unknown. Except with opiates, which you must be off of them for I believe it was 24-48 hours. It'll then carry you through the opiate withdrawals.

I find Ibogaine, DMT, and Ayahuasca fascinating. Very powerful and spiritual trips could lead yourself into enlightenment. If only I didn't fear such a thing while on baclofen.

                    Ibogaine

I did find some info on this, there is actually a good bit of info online, I'm still researching the subject. It seems a bit scarey and they do not seem to be able to predict the outcome prior to the administration of the drug/herb(?) for everyone that takes it although the facilities that utilize this therapy do seem to require certain testing (liver enzymes & EKG) and an extensive interview prior to acceptance of the patient into the program. In my opinion, they need to require much more of a physical work up and testing than they do at this time before toying with someone's life. I'm sure they make you sign a waiver so that the patient/family cannot file a law suit if the therapy ends badly. It appears to work better on those addicted to drugs than those addicted to alcohol. There are experiences by those that have tried this therapy that are good, bad, and then really bad (death), but they are not sure with those that died of all underlying health issues that actually precipitated the death (heart problems seems to be a big precipitating issue to lead to death after taking this). An EKG only shows the heart rhythm at the time the EKG test is done, people can have an abnormal heart rhythm and it not show up on an EKG but occurs under various other circumstances (stress, for example). Wearing a heart monitor for a week or two would be a better look into a person's heart rhythm.

This drug/herb is certainly not something to be taking on your own since it is considered a "trip" lasting approximately 72hrs (which needs close medical monitoring and intervention) and the after effects seem to last up to a year. It is stated in one article that the residuals of the drug/herb are stored in the adipose (fat) tissue of the body and is slowly metabolized over a period of time. There really has not been enough clinical supervised testing on this drug/herb to warrant giving it to people, but unfortunately most of us in the throws of addiction are pretty desperate for a solution and some are willing to try something that is still underground and experimental. The dollar cost for this therapy is very high since they have these luxury resorts, doctors, nurses, etc to accommodate the recovery and it is similar to a luxurious vacation. One site that is a treatment center shows before and after brain scans that look really promising, but skepticism prevails in my thinking on this since the site is promoting their treatment and the scans may not be legitimate. One site even described the methods of making the drug/herb (not a good idea in my opinion, since someone may try to make it themselves).

Drugs like Baclofen have been around for many yrs, have been proven safe at very high doses, and in my research I have not found that anyone actually overdosed to death on Baclofen. Much is known and has been proven with Baclofen on different types of people with different types of health issues. Although Baclofen needs more extensive clinical as well to prove its' abilities in addiction (it has proven itself to me based on the personal case studies on this site), but the safety has been established based on those with neuromuscular issues. This drug Ibogaine appears to possibly "heal" the brain, but the risks seem to out weigh the benefits and not enough is known about the immediate effects and after effects over the long term.

I am a bit new here to this forum and still in the baby stages of Baclofen therapy (1.5 wks), but I am open minded regarding the study of new therapies, just not open to taking such a chance with my own life. Certainly something to keep an eye on for the future (if it ever makes it very far) but definitely something to be very skeptical of at this time in its' process. It certainly cannot do any harm to research. I wish you God Speed on your journey out of addiction and if you decide to try this therapy, please let us know how it turns out for you.
r />There appear to have been some studies as eluded to in the articles I read, but I have been unable at this point to find any official medical clinical trials. Below are the sites I reviewed so far. I will read more of this therapy, but Spirit is right regarding this therapy is not really available to most of us (if we were interested in doing it at all with respect to the safety issues).

Thanks! This is a pretty good documentary. Ibogaine treatment is extremely powerful and if you decide it's something you want to do seek a professional. It isn't something I would recommend doing without medical staff present.
