    Experiences with Topa?

I keep reading threads created by people who've been successful with baclofen, but haven't seen much about experiences/successes with Topa. I'd love to hear from you that have tried this med, and if anyone has some good links to articles about it, I'd appreciate it if you shared. I've read the article from The Lancet that RJ cites, but that seems pretty outdated. :thanks:

    Experiences with Topa?

I got some for my wife. It had no effect at all. It was a waste of money.

I also got some Naltrexone. It had a very unpleasant effect on my wife and she called the police and told them I was trying to poison her. She was fortunately very drunk at the time so they didn't believe her. I hid the Naltrexone in a hedge across the street so I wouldn't be charged with possession of a drug without a prescription.

The one benefit of the Naltrexone is that because it didn't work and my wife was drunk, I didn't get arrested.

I can also give the same endorsements of other treatments such as Campral, a completely ineffective treatment, you might as well swallow a piece of chalk.

Then there is Sodium Valproate, given out for the "underlying condition!" in many "alcoholics" viz., bipolar. That drug will make you depressed, get red blotchy skin and gain a lot of weight. What it doesn't do is cure either bipolar or alcoholism. It will make you feel lousy and eventually, a doctor will stop giving it out because it is only intended for short term administration.

I think you will find that there is a thread here about "Starting Topa with a question". Some time ago there were a number of people, or maybe only one, who tried to stop the thread from continually appearing at the top of the medications page. The thread is about everything but success on Topa. It is more of a chat room for people who have once tried Topa and it gives a misleading impression, because it keeps popping up, that Topa is actually a useful drug in alcohol treatment.

I did some research into it several years ago but the actual experience with it was disappointing. I am sure there are a few people here who have taken it and felt some benefit.

    Best wishes

In addiction, suppression of symptoms should suppress the disease altogether since addiction is, as he observed, a "symptom-driven disease". Of all "anticraving medications used in animals, only one - baclofen - has the unique property of suppressing the motivation to consume cocaine, heroin, alcohol, nicotine and d-amphetamine"

RJ had success with it, at least that's what I read in her book. I hear much more about something called baclofen. Seems to be pretty effective. I have an appointment with my naturopath in 2 weeks, so I'll get the skinny from her as well. I may do just fine with the supps and tapes. We'll see. Thank you for your input! (I'm glad you didn't get arrested, btw!)
