Baclofen and urine infection 4 nights i.c.u

    Hi all,

I am an avid reader of the forum but just a reader, but I feel I have a story to share. Firstly I think baclofen is a wonder drug and I think it should be made available to every alcoholic that wishes to try this route.

I have been on baclofen for six months, and I am at a dose of 120mg per day. A couple of weeks ago I began retaining urine, a problem since back surgery earlier this year, anyway due to that fact I developed a urine infection. This is where the fun begins.......

I don't remember a single thing of what happened but I was extremely confused and falling about the place, and no I had not been drinking or taken too much baclofen as my dosette box was correct, my partner could obviously see I was very unwell and called the ambulance, but they had to get three policemen to restrain me. As I said I don't remember any of this, I am a completely non violent female who works in the medical profession myself, so as you can imagine it's all been quite embarrassing.

I was taken to intensive care where they were querying encephalitis or viral meningitis. Anyway to cut a very long story short it turned out that the delerium that I had is extremely rare in young females under 35, but the baclofen due to its properties had heightened the situation.

My partner warned every doctor in sight not to stop my baclofen, but they all seemed very clued up on the medication now, so I was only reduced to 60gfor two days then 80g for two days as they needed to reduce the baclofen as obviously it was causing my delerium.

Apparently when you become septic, baclofen can cause heightened delerium, hence what happened in my case. This is due to instead of it being a muscle relaxant it almost works in the opposite way. I believe the same thing can happen with baclofen overdose.

Please let me state again that I think baclofen is a wonder drug, and I am on 110mg at present, but it really shook me and scared me. So without being a scaremonger my only advice from my experience is if you get an infection please keep an eye on your confusion level before it gets to where I got too.

    Thanks for reading

    Xx

Hi Jane, yea it's really shaken me, I think it's the not remembering and then waking up in intensive care and being told this crazy story!

I have had two back operations so my doctor prescribes me 80mg per day for spinal injuries......but obviously it has a double benefit for me. But my doctor knows the dangers of running out of baclofen so I put my script in every 20 days and that covers me for my 120. I know there is a few places you can buy baclofen on the internet from that are reliable sites, or depending on what country you live in their is specialist doctors that prescribe it. I live in the uk and there is a couple here now.

I do still think it is a wonder drug, it's just a very powerful drug in the sense that it tweaks your receptors in your brain. There are lots of indepth posts on here about baclofen, where to buy it, how to use it, what to expect and lots and lots of success stories.

    Xx

Renal insufficiency due to injury or impairment (like infection) can cause baclofen plasma levels to rise with the consequence of overdose side-effects/toxicity. It is mentioned in this article: Clinical and Phamacokinetic Aspects of High Dose Baclofen Therapy

Glad that you are ok now.

Thanks for that terry. It's something that I don't think a lot of people know. A lot of people get urine infections, but these people are not on hdb so do not experience what myself and my poor family went through.

I don't want to scaremonger just beware if you get a urinary infection. I also believe gabapentin can cause urine retention and in turn cause urinary tract infections. A lot of people use both gabapentin and baclofen together so I thought it was a story worth sharing
