What are you going to do today?

I'm pretty excited because there was a hummingbird eating in my garden this morning. I've never seen one there before, and it's not for lack of trying!

So today I'm going to fill up and hang the hummingbird feeders.

I'm also going to put down my cigarette and get on my very neglected bicycle. For at least a minute or two. *sigh*

I'm going to either buy some clothes (which I need) or some plants (which I really don't but would rather buy). Anyone else gardening?

I'm also going to take a minute to reflect on what Memorial Day means, and email my family's veterans a thanks. Any vets here in the meds threads?

I'm not going to have any booze to drink today. I'd like to lose a little bit of weight, and if I'm going to indulge, I'd rather have chocolate calories than alcohol calories. (Which reminds me to be grateful that I can choose, now. It was a long haul!)

So what're you gonna do? (Or have you done, for those down under.)

hmmm. All of that depends on whether or not I turn off the interwebs.

    Must. Turn. Off. Now.

We have them in the garden every day, but hey, what do you expect when you live in the tropics.
We have the green ones, which are quite common and we have red ones, which are rare.
You could buy some plants that attract them.

      Yugh, cigarettes.
Bicycle, is that the rusty thing with two flat tyres that's hanging in my shed? :H

I'm trying to garden, but because we have a semi-desert climate, not everything will grow.
I had some success with grapes, carrots and lemon eucalyptus.
Also tangerines, bananas and mangoes do well and I'm trying to grow a Meyer lemon.

I also just received seeds from coffee, tea an an ornamental Jacaranda tree. I will see how that goes.

Actually I should go working to make some money, but I've been working on making a stairs for the basement all weekend long and it's still not finished. Last night I dreamt of it almost the whole night, so I think I will take the day off and try to finish the stairs, so that will be out of my mind.

But first I have to do some phone calls and some send some e-mails.
Today is the first day of the rest of my life.

Oh my. Bananas and mangoes and grapes and tangerines and oh, wow. Coffee and tea?!? I might plant a tomato, but I'm afraid that the rest of the garden/landscape is perfectly useless--except that it's pretty (or hopefully will be) and I've planted stuff for birds and bees and varmints.

I'm going to take advantage of being dog-less for the moment, and fill up my bird feeders to feed the squirrels. When my dog was younger, she was fast enough (and they were dumb enough) to catch them. When she got older, it was torture for all of us because she couldn't catch them, but that didn't mean she didn't try. She chased one through a fence, and cut her eye open, several years ago.

Hope you get the stairs done and earn a bunch of money tomorrow!

Yup. Mine's chained to a lattice of cobwebs outside my back door.

Today I'm going to drink my morning coffee and work on revising an article that's been *almost* accepted for publication in a peer-reviewed journal. Or, not accepted, but at least on the very right track toward being accepted, and they'd like to see it again after I revise it based on their suggestions.

Then since my hot water heater is on the fritz, I'm going to go to the gym like I did yesterday. Work out for a while, and take a nice long hot shower there.

After that I plan to stop by the bar in the early afternoon for a spiced tomato juice cocktail, the kind that goes with beer to make a michelada, but for me without the beer. Not sure what I'll do with the rest of the afternoon, probably work more on the article and have an espresso somewhere.

This evening I'll go to this quirky little hole-in-the-wall bar downtown that I really like. It's a Chicago bar, so they'll have the hockey game on with the volume turned up, and I'll wear my jersey and hopefully the Blackhawks will win. And probably make my way back to my bar by the end of the evening.

No drinking today, but it's Memorial Day and my birthday so I definitely want to take it easy and hang out in the places I like to be.

          Thanks for asking, Ne.

Happy Birthday, Stuck! Is there no cake planned? Maybe an espresso-flavored one to go with the theme?

Huge hugs and wishes for a nice day.

Spending the weekend away at my sons baseball tournament. Today is championship seeding so say a prayer for my sons team:thanks:

SO grateful not to be drinking here. Last year would have been so different. Everyone at these tournaments drinks, but it's so much cheaper not to :H

I'm also saying thanks to all the men and women who have or are keeping our country safe. I am eligible to be a DAR..my fathers relatives all served in WW1 and the civil war. How cool!

              Hugs to you all:l

Thanks for the thread, Ne. Happy birthday, Stuck. You sound damn good! I'm staying inside today because it's dang hot out. I'm also enjoying a 4 day weekend and do have to face some work later today. On Saturday I walked some trails for about 8 hours and I'm thrilled to say the combination of heat and baclofen wasn't as brutal for me as last year AND we saw a 10' gator. Too cool.

What are you going to do today?

I love hummingbirds too. I had set up some feeders and then never saw one, so I kind of gave up. It's been a quiet day here...a quiet weekend. I finally finished the garden this morning. I changed my mind on Saturday. I decided to plant my tomatoes in containers this year to open up more space for other veggies. I ran around and got things for that as well as find some heirloom tomato plants. So four different heirlooms in pots. In the garden I planted: zucchini, cucumbers, 3 varieties of lettuce and then mesclun, cantaloupe, eggplant, green beans, radish, green onions, carrots, and bell peppers that will eventually be red. I think that's all.

It's was in the 80s here and sunny, so the kids played on and off in the sprinkler. Then to the park. A thunderstorm is brewing up now, which is why I purposely didn't water after the last few seeds I planted today.

Xadrian, you can grow some really neat things. Good luck finishing your stairs. It's great you're handy and can do projects like that!

Happy Happy Birthday, Mr. Stuck! I agree that you do sound somewhat settled and well. :l

We had a bird's nest under the deck with four baby birds. It was just on a rafter and the nest fell over somehow. One of the babies died in the fall, I assume. There are still three that are alive. It doesn't appear the mother bird is coming back, or at least we haven't seen her. We are careful not to touch them in case. I'm just wondering if I should call around to a wildlife place to see if they could take them? The birds are big enough that they could survive if fed either by the mom, or a human who knows what they're doing.

What do you guys think? It breaks my heart to not do anything and just let them die. I wouldn't want to move them if the mother was feeding them and we didn't know it either.

                            Nice walk, Kronk.

                            Fingers are crossed, Sam!

Red, I think it takes time for mama bird to come back after a fuss. (I don't know why I think this.) I wouldn't do anything except hope for the best, but I can also understand your consternation. Maybe you can reach someone to ask tonight? I think the wildlife rescue places around here have someone on call. Your garden sounds amazing. And delish! I'm almost inspired to plant a veggie!

                              What'd you decide, Red?

I got nothing done yesterday. I wasn't able to cross one single thing off of my to-do list, and didn't even hang the hummingbird feeders.

I did have lunch with my aunt. That's much more important. But still. And I bought some clothes. (I don't have a scale, but I have gained enough weight to move up 3 sizes. Just in the last 8 months! ugh. Buying a bathing suit is going to be hellish.)

My aunt invited me to join her women's group. They meet once a month and do something interesting together, then lunch. I am SO thrilled that she invited me. Seriously, that's huge. She and my uncle bore the brunt of my alcoholism in so many ways. Missed dinners and no phone calls. One memorable afternoon when my uncle was so worried showed up at my door in the mid-afternoon and I was too drunk to answer, but he knew I was home. That was almost a decade ago! I stayed with them for several months after I got out of rehab the last time (2005). I never really stopped drinking, but learned to hide it better, so my behavior was still erratic even though everyone thought I was sober. Building trust has been a hard thing to do, so this is momentous.

I really don't want to go, though. All of my standard excuses apply. I don't like groups or strangers, I've got nothing in common with these women, I'm very likely to make a fool of myself, I'm not nearly accomplished enough to fit in...

Just typing them out makes me realize how lame they are, and how important it is for me to go for my own sake.

So today I'm going to a museum and then having lunch with ladies! The rest of the stuff will get done, or it won't.

                              What're you guys doing?
