Has anybody taken wellbutrin and had success with it? Can you drink moderately on it?

Not sure about the drinking on it, but I do know this about Wellbutrin.
It helps you stop smoking, and is a good medication for people who have ADD.

Wellbutrin is a good antidepressant that does not have many of the side effects of other antidepressants, especially the SSRIs. It is not good to drink on any antidepressant because alcohol is a depressant but yes, you can drink moderately on it safely. I have been on it for a long time. It is not as good as some of the others with irritability and anxiety but does not cause weight gain, etc and does not make you drowsy. It is supposed to also help you stop smoking - but alas it has not had this effect on me. If your dr. is recommending it I would give it a try.

Hi Louise,
For smoking cessation, please consider taking the new medication Chantex. I know of three long term and heavy smokers who have taken it with great results. My mother who has smoked for 50 yrs, has tried everything, and this medication did the trick for her.

One caution. I was on it a few years ago and remember that the literature says if you are a heavy drinker and cut back suddenly you could have a seizure. Make sure you read all the information about the drug.

Hi Soccermom,

I used Wellbutrin for about a year during a rough patch. It seemed to help the lows be less low. I didn't really alter my drinking habits, nor did it help with smoking. I smoked the whole while I was taking it. If you're considering taking it for smoking cessation, I highly recommend Chantix instead, as well. I've been a smoker for 20+ years and started taking Chantix about a month ago. I'm now officially a non-smoker!!!! My husband, too!!!! If you're considering it for depression, I think it is helpful. Also, something to consider is Lexapro. I've recently started taking that for anxiety and depression (it's called menopause), and I really think it has helped tremendously. Good luck with whatever you decide.
