When trying to find a doctor to prescribe, try a psychiatrist

When I first discovered balcofen on mywayout and read Dr Amiesen's book, I tried general practitioner doctor after doctor trying to get baclofen. Most had never heard of it other than the on label usage, and dismissed my studies and prescribing guide showing it worked without even looking at it, all they offered me was therapy and hospital detox. I gave up and ordered online.

I started visiting a psychiatrist earlier this year to get a handle on my anxiety which was the cause of my alcoholism. I decided to be completely honest with him today about my baclofen usage, I held back before because of prior negative reactions from other doctors. I came armed with the prescribing guide, 2 year study showing 70% success rate and a page from the "New Frontiers in Alcohol and health" which shows how baclofen works, link below, a good read for anyone who takes baclofen. All my documents stabled with relevant sections highlighted, ready for a confrontation perhaps?

As soon as a I mentioned that I used baclofen to eliminate my cravings and had been doing so for over a year. He nonchalantly said yes, baclofen being used for this purpose and there is also another gaba-b drug being worked on based on the same mechanism.

So if you're struggling to find a doctor, try a psychiatrist hopefully one that is up to date with the latest research and you might have better luck. In Australia it's tough to find a doctor who will prescribe.

edit: Missed baclofen in the subject, but these days on the forum, thats all we seem to talk about, as its the clear winner.

I second this suggestion. Even if the psychiatrist is not fully up to date with the latest alcoholism research, psychiatrists are often much more sympathetic and willing when it comes to treating alcoholism and anxiety with medications. My psychiatrist knew nothing about baclofen for alcoholism until I went to him with both articles and the success stories I read about here. He was willing to give it a try and I'm now up to 160 mg, hopefully to go even higher.

Hi Neo -have you ever tried any other medications? What was the other drug(s) your doctor mentioned. This information might help others who are unable to take Baclofen.

      Thanks

Hi spirit, I haven't tried any other medications, I did try GABA powder to try and curb cravings, but that did nothing. When I hit my low point in 2013, I really searched for some answers. I bought alan carrs easy way to stop drinking, went to a therapist and looked to find an anti craving medication. Initially I was going to go on campral and naltrexone togeather. Attempting to research those sent me here and then I discovered baclofen.

Hmmm I really can't remember what drug it was, I have an appointment with him in November, I'll note down to ask him what it is. He mentioned that it was a GABAB agonist drug operating on the same mechanism as baclofen i.e. mediation of dopamine.

I suspect that the drug is in development so it can be patented, but who knows, maybe it will be better than baclofen. Any new research in this area is a win. As my psychiatrist said, there are a lot of exciting things happening in pharmacology, it is the frontier of medicine.

I have been lucky to have a psychiatrist that is open to meds and seems to know the recent literature. I feel very fortunate.
