    Thanks, DonQixote.

As well as the baclofen trial presentation, Jonathan Chick is discussing "The contribution of diagnostic systems to precision on treatment" - there is a somewhat robust discussion going on elsewhere in the forum about what really constitutes an alcoholic, some accusations flying about that some of us "aren't real alcoholics, because we don't have the GABBA-B malfunction" etc. I'm not going to get involved in that discussion, but it will be interesting to hear what the experts think.

Thanks, Don and nice to see you!

Where did you find the information about Dr. Chick, Molly? Was it what Don posted? I didn't see it but I also didn't look very closely.

I'm not a huge Dr. Chick fan, since he limits the amount of baclofen he'll prescribe to what I consider is a fairly low dose, but he has made a huge difference in lives. He also wrote a paper about baclofen being a substitute for alcohol and I had some issues with the language he used in the paper. (And yes, I know it's beyond presumptuous for me to be passing judgment on a guy who's been doing this professionally for tens of years. But whatever.)

Anyway, I'd be very interested in what he presents. Hope it gets published somewhere.

That's the same question I have.

            Hi Molly

I would not describe trying to determine whether there are different reasons why people drink to excess as an "accusation" that some people are "not" true alcoholics. When I began participating on this forum and discussing the theory that Ameisen puts forward about Gaba b anxiety many posters said they were alcoholics but never suffered from anxiety and drank because they enjoyed it.

I would say that "accusing" someone suggests saying something bad about them. Is it good to be an an alcoholic and somehow wrong to say someone might not be as heavy or as serious a drinker as others, or perhaps can get sober by not taking a medication?

I'm not really too sure where you are going with that. I think it is very important in understanding who should use which drug, what their clinical history is and the level of their dinking.

I have to say that the sub-theme on this forum which has developed that I am "bashing" (NE) Naltrexone and its users is very peculiar to me. I have never "bashed" a medication or anyone who has taken any medication. I had a long running dialogue, as did we all, way back when, with UKBlonde who was getting nowhere with Baclofen so I, yes I, told her to to see Dr. Chick and he put her on Nal and said that baclofen was not for her. After that, I had no issues with her at all or her decision and she is doing well on it. My attitude towards anyone on any drug is that it is a matter for them. Nal didn't work for my wife and it had such bad side effects that she thought she had been drugged and called the police. She swears by baclofen which works.

By the way, in relation to DUI. My wife, since 2002 has had two driving bans totaling 8 years. On each occasion she has had to get a blood test to get her license back. On the second occasion she had to get her own GP to do a report and then a specialist alcohol doctor to make a report and she was given a licence lasting only one year. She then had to get another doctors report at the end of the year. Due to other issues such as emigrating she did not apply after the second ban of 5 years ended so that ban carried on so that her total ban for DUI has been 10 years. During the two years she had her license back she was arrested again for DUI and blew 190. The legal limit was 35. She escaped prosecution because she was so drunk she had wandered off from the car and was reported to the police for staggering down the middle a busy road being nearly hit by cars in a 60 mph zone.

This was all before baclofen. With baclofen treatment she passed all the tests, including liver tests and got a full license back just last November.

            Olivier Ameisen

In addiction, suppression of symptoms should suppress the disease altogether since addiction is, as he observed, a "symptom-driven disease". Of all "anticraving medications used in animals, only one - baclofen - has the unique property of suppressing the motivation to consume cocaine, heroin, alcohol, nicotine and d-amphetamine"
