Is there a doctor in the US that will prescribe baclofen over Skype?
Thanks -
Hi, Star. I don't know of any doctors that will, or even can, prescribe medications over skype.
If you're interested in more information about baclofen, please join us at http://www.theendofmyaddiction.org/
We may be able to help you find a doctor, or find an alternative.
No matter what, hang in there.

Hi Star, I believe there are restrictions that prevent doctors from prescribing across state lines (I know for sure that applies to controlled substances; not sure about other meds). Just to share my experience with you though, baclofen alone was not a cure for me. I have a whole slew of psychological disorders including generalized anxiety, panic, ADD, PTSD from early childhood abuse and depression. Although I am medicated for each of these conditions, I have not found an adequate substitute for talking with others. I have a therapist who works in the same practice as my psychiatrist (they both use the same chart) and I know 12 step is not everyone's cup of tea, but if nothing else it is an opportunity to share things that I might otherwise drink and drug over with others who can understand. I also go periodically to SMART meetings. It's my experience that people who pooh-pooh AA and "wish" they could go to a SMART meeting end up not liking SMART either because both programs require you to follow certain guidelines and if there's one thing an addict likes the least, it's being told what to do.
Good luck finding an addiction psychiatrist that will play ball with baclofen. They're out there, you just have to dig sometime. And if you can't, there are other effective meds as well. Although I'm not on it anymore, I found Campral (acamprosate) cut down on a whole host of obsessive behaviors including not only drinking, but impulse buying and obsessing over sex. Naltrexone is commonly used as well. I think only the least progressive psychiatrists will recommend antabuse anymore. For the most part it's considered an outdated therapy. I know I "gamed" antabuse, stopping when I knew I wanted to drink. I even drank on it a couple of times and it didn't make me nearly as sick as it's supposed to.
By the way, it would help to know where you live.Last edited by aihfl; April 4, 2016, 11:24 AM.First, a man takes a drink, then the drink takes a drink, then the drink takes the man. --Chinese proverb

I am not aware of any doctor who prescribes using Skype and I would seriously doubt that any insurer would insure such a doctor but good luck trying.
I suggest you go to the new forum for some good advice about this. I'm not in the US anyway but I have been involved in medical malpractice cases and I don't think you'll find any doctor who will stick his neck out and prescribe baclofen in that way without seeing you.
Best wishes in your journey.BACLOFENISTA

In addiction, suppression of symptoms should suppress the disease altogether since addiction is, as he observed, a "symptom-driven disease". Of all "anticraving medications used in animals, only one - baclofen - has the unique property of suppressing the motivation to consume cocaine, heroin, alcohol, nicotine and d-amphetamine"

Why are you not willing to help Star on this site? Why does she have to come to your new site?

Terry and the medical doctor that works with her are prescribing a combination of Baclofen and Naltrexone for those that they find are physically and mentally able to do so.
The number one requirement is a true desire to stop drinking -"now".

This site was much better several years ago when there was a good atmosphere and lots of people with the same goal. Now all of those people have left because of the trolling of the site which, as you can see, has brought the meds thread to a standstill.
We have all gone over to the new site www.theendofmyaddiction.org which doesn't suffer from trolling and is devoted to providing a supportive environment for anyone wanting help with their addiction.
We hope you will join us there.

I know someone who has access to a doctor in Chicago who prescribes high dose baclofen. Are you near there?
My own therapist (in Virginia) offers therapy via skype or over the phone. But it isn't clear yet how and in what ways she will be able to prescribe for people out of state. In the meantime, until she figures that out, she will not be doing any prescribing. Which is not to say that she might not be able to help you if you find doctor who will prescribe. (And her prices are VERY reasonable...)
The reason people keep encouraging you to step on over to the other site is because it is newly created for the purpose of (among other things) helping people find and get information about medications for alcoholism treatment.
There have also been real problems on this site related to the fact that there are not any moderators, so people have been able to post really negative or untrue or malicious or ridiculous posts. That said, there IS a lot of info to be found here. Still, I think you may find the other forum has more information and more support, should you choose to participate in a forum regularly. If nothing else, please take a look over there!

If you post there, I think the person who knows the physician in Chicago would be able to reach out to you directly, and much more quickly, than me following up with her, and then you, here on MWO.
Best to you, either way.

For anyone in the US, I put some general info on the legality of telemedicine (using licensed and board-certified health professionals through phone or internet consultations) here.
The gist of it is that generally, prescribing *controlled* medications need at least one face-to-face visit (with some exceptions). Baclofen, Natrexone, Acamprosate, Topiramate, Antabuse, Gabapentin, and SSRIs are not controlled substances. Benzodiazapines, Pregabalin *are* controlled substances.

there's a doc in Barrington Illinois. Its listed on the new site http://www.theendofmyaddiction.org/topic/63-illinois/The individual has always had to struggle to keep from being overwhelmed by the tribe. If you try it, you will be lonely often, and sometimes frightened. But no price is too high to pay for the privilege of owning yourself.
