Baclofen treatment for alcoholism

This is an outstanding website created by Dr. Amanda Stafford from the Royal Perth Hospital in Western Australia. It contains extensive information on Baclofen, including a section for physicians interested in prescribing it. I sent the link to my doc although she is already on board the Baclofen train. :happy2:

Have a read of the site. It says some docs won't. I just walked into the docs, actually not my regular and he just wrote out a prescription but I did explain why and the research . 11 Dec 15 when I got them but I think xmas relapse got me. They expire 06 - 17 so why not try. I'd still have valium on hand when first quitting and at least have that. This is a new trial for me and have quit a few times without it so can't give anyone my experiences with it

Having read into the article more , it shows tiltration and you can use it while drinking and work up to the dose to find out what loses your craving for alcohol. Wish I knew this in Jan when I relapsed as could have tried it

                Re: Baclofen treatment for alcoholism

The best info site is definitely Dr. Stafford's site. The Soundcloud testimonials from users of baclofen are particularly interesting and truly resonate. I listened to one, Patient 6, and it could have been our situation she was talking about.

Here is what President Obama wrote in support of Baclofen treatment for baclofen. A couple of months later the NIH started its trial of Baclofen for anxiety and alcoholism:

Thank you for writing. I have heard from many Americans whose lives have been affected by a wide range of health conditions and diseases. Whether they are common, preventable ailments or rare, life-threatening illnesses, we must do more to find cures and improve treatments for patients.

I have always been a strong supporter of medical research because of its power to lead to discoveries that save lives, relieve suffering, and improve quality of life for those afflicted. Medical miracles do not happen by accident. They often result from painstaking and costly research, as well as years of trial and error. From the sequencing of the human genome to life-saving vaccines and pioneering cancer treatment, Federally-funded research has led to scientific progress and improved health care for countless Americans.

To advance medical research, the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act made over $10 billion available to the National Institutes of Health for scientific research grants. This money has helped fund an array of research projects in labs and hospitals across our country. I also lifted the ban on Federal funding for embryonic stem cell research, which has the unique potential to help us better understand—and possibly cure—some of the most devastating diseases and conditions. To explore the steps my Administration is taking, please visit National Institutes of Health (NIH) | Turning Discovery Into Health.

At times, our pride in discovery of innovative drugs is tempered by shortages of vital medications, including some used for the treatment of cancer. That is why in October 2011, I signed an Executive Order directing the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) to take action to help reduce and prevent drug shortages, protect consumers, and prevent price gouging. Since then, over 100 drug shortages have been averted. Additionally, the FDA has taken action to increase drug companies’ notifications of potential drug shortages so they can work to prevent or mitigate a shortage before it becomes a crisis. Through these and other aggressive efforts, we will continue working to protect the health of Americans and ensure patients have access to the lifesaving medicines they need.

Thank you, again, for writing. Together, we can keep America at the forefront of medical research and disease treatments. This work is essential not only for our health and well-being, but also for the progress of all humanity.

                Sincerely,

                Barack Obama

In addiction, suppression of symptoms should suppress the disease altogether since addiction is, as he observed, a "symptom-driven disease". Of all "anticraving medications used in animals, only one - baclofen - has the unique property of suppressing the motivation to consume cocaine, heroin, alcohol, nicotine and d-amphetamine"

It worked for me. I started 12/12/12 and I followed the titration protocol. So much changed for me because of baclofen. I relaxed, I was less anxious and I drank 1-2 drinks on special occasions with friends. I took better care of myself and my home. I got new hobbies and started exercising. I quit baclofen a year or two ago because I had bad side effects running in heat and I don't think too much about alcohol anymore.

                    Give it a try.

mach101962 Yes. It worked for me. If you do try Baclofen, I would recommend the titration schedule I listed in a post above. I couldn't go one day without drinking before Baclofen.

Look here for lots of additional information as well as the site I listed at the beginning of this thread: Baclofen for Alcoholism and Alcohol Dependency

It did not stop me wanting to drink.

What it did was alleviate the anxiety that caused me to need drink as a crutch.

Baclofen has definitely worked for me, but I have been dropped by several physicians and am now having trouble finding one who will prescribe at high enough doses. Does anyone know a reliable online pharmacy?
