    Question about Campral

I'm on my 5th day of Campral. My cravings for alcohol have subsided. I don't want to be to quick to say this is the result of Campral. It could also be a result of me repeating the consequences of my last binge in my mind. I don't want to go back there again. I want to have a sound peace of mind, and put all the stupid things I've said and done behind me. I'm focusing on the fact that I have a disease, that its only getting worse, and that the next drink will either kill me or land me in jail for killing another due to alcohol.

      Question about Campral

On my 6th day of being AF. No cravings. Taking 2 tabs of Campral 3 times a day. The only side effect I'm feeling is sleepiness. I'm sleeping soundly at night. I don't like taking perscription pills. I fear taking them and am afraid of what their side effects are or how they will effect me. In this case, alcohol was killing me. If I can consume alcohol to know end, then I might as well pop my Campral as perscribed. I'm damned if I do or dont. Hence, if I have to feel sluggish and tired the next couple of weeks, so be it. I rather feel sleepy than hungover. I'm waking up feeling great today.

        Question about Campral

I have been taking campral for 3 days - no cravings - but I do not like the gastric effects (stomach a wreck) or overall feeling. I think I am much like db2. Topa is very strong for me also but it was effective at 25mg/day for moderation. Today I am going to try flooding myself with Gaba capsules and see how that works. I don't think kudzu works for me.

          Question about Campral

I have been on Campral for three weeks now. The cravings were gone after the third day! My problem is that I have gained weight while on it! Amazing since the calories from drinking averaged 800 a day, and lack of excersize. For three weeks I have walked and ate properly, no alcohol, only Campral - I gained three pounds~! I have sent away for Topamax, hopefully that will work better for me.

                Question about Campral

                Campral or Topamax??

I just started Campral, but my goal is moderation. I keep hearing you have to abstain from alcohol completey. Should I try Topamax since my goal is moderation. I don't drink everyday only Friday and Saturdays, but have problems stopping. Do you have any advice???

                  Question about Campral

                  Moderation is my goal

                  Jas,

I just started Campral. Seems to work fine, but my goal is moderation. I want a glass of wine on the weekends. I am scared to drink if it will wipe away the effects of Campral. Should I try Topamax? I hear crazy things about it, but I hear you gain weight on Campral. Any advice?

                  Wish you luck,

                  tug

                    Question about Campral

I'm of the opinion that Campral/Naltrexone/Topa must work for some and not others. I suppose since our body chemistry is all different, it makes sense that one drug might work good for one person but not another.

I for one am feeling great success with Naltrexone (though admittedly, it's early in the process).

Also, to address one previous poster's question- my doc did not say that 5 sober days were needed before starting Naltrexone. He said I could start it that day, and that some people take it while still drinking, and that it can help you cut down.

However, don't necessarily accept anecdotal info- ask a doctor!

I posted my recent findings with Naltrexone here, for anyone who's interested....

                      Question about Campral

                      Hi,
My doctor had me quit drinking for 3 days before starting on Campral, 2-333mg 3 times a day, at first I felt cravings a couple of times and then decided to dump my stash. Now I feel stronger and have a happier outlook on life. I thought I would keep my booze to test myself, not smart, take away all temptation, I haven't gone back to AA yet but I know I should, being around the same kinds of people is probably a good idea. I pray that any of this is helpful, I also have a strong support in husband, son and family, so rely on them if you can. Also have decided to lose the weight (282 lbs.) and get healthy all the way around.
Keep on trying one day at a time.
                      God Bless
                      S.

                        Question about Campral

I have been successful on Campral for a year and a half. After 12 months I cut the dose in half and have continued my success. My one recommendation is to stop thinking about drinking and move on with life. I no longer even like the idea of drinking so I focus on things that I do enjoy. When driving, focus on not hitting a pothole in the road-you will find that you hit it more than you think......we gravitate towards what we focus on, EVEN if we focus on avoiding it. Just my thought.

BTW, givin the above statement, why do I visit this site? Because I hope to learn and help others in regards to Campral. It is a wonderful drug for SOME people.

                          Question about Campral

I'm drinking on Campral and it seems to be still doing it's job. I don't drink during the week then have a couple of glasses of wine on the weekend. Naltrexone didn't work for me, and I'm too scared to take Antabuse! ha

Has anyone had any undesired side effects from Campral? I've noticed a massive change in my mood - ie I'm really angry and irritable and it also knocks my socks off like a super strong sleeping tablet. So much so that I've had to stop taking my morning dose otherwise I'd be asleep all day.

                            Question about Campral

Be careful that you aren't conning yourself, it's quite easy to fall into the trap of thinking just the few at weekend are ok. Then it creeps up on you again. If you are missing doses too perhaps the changes are due to something else.

I didn't think Campral was a sedative so can't explain the sleepiness since it didn't effect me that way, and I don't think I've heard of anyone else feeling that.

                              Question about Campral

                              Thanks Ukblonde!

Unfortunately I can't get my head round abstinence atm, hence my reluctance to take antabuse. Clearly need to work on that one! Fingers crossed, down the track I'll be able to stop drinking full stop without going into a blind panic. ugh. Counselling seems to be helping though and I only started campral 12 days ago so hopefully the side effects stop and I can face a life of sobriety.

                                Question about Campral

By the way, angry and irritable can be side effects from cutting out AL too. I know I go through a very stroppy phase some days after a binge, that's after the initial poor me and depression bit.
