    Baclofenman - My Story of Baclofen Two years in.

    Greetings fellow forum users

    Today is the second anniversary of my abstinence from alcohol thanks to Baclofen

    Do not be mistaken - Baclofen is NOT a miracle cure on its own - With good organization, planning, patience and understanding, Baclofen can help you attain and maintain sobriety

    I began my programme in November 2015 following the titration schedule. Initially starting @30mg oral Baclofen (Zaclofen 10mg tablets) daily, increasing by 10mg every 4 days - This is considered slow, however having drunk irresponsibly for 30+ years, I wanted to be sure I gave myself the best chance I could - I spent many hours researching Baclofen (Science) and Baclofen (anecdotally) - The anecdotal evidence I read on this Forum was priceless and informative. On January 1st 2016, I had my last drink. I was on a dosage of 150 mg oral Baclofen (Zaclofen 10mg tablets) per day - My side effects at that time were;

    Runny Nose - Like I had a permanent cold
    Tingling finger tips - Not a major issue, just a bit of a funny feeling
    Daytime somnolence - Knackered, each and every day - This is where my determination and understanding this would happen was a great help
    Mild but sometimes serious constipation (This cleared up when I changed generic)
    Loss of quality eyesight - This has improved of late
    Reduction of libido
    Episodes of a manic nature - this involved generally being "very enthusiastic" and noisy - lol - So i am told!!
    Some states of confusion and memory loss - This side effect is still moot with me as although it has now improved I think some of it is a hangover following my stroke in March 2015

    The bonus was that I slept all night, solidly - Sometimes too solidly! - This lead to several bed wetting episodes

    I titrated up to 180mg oral Baclofen daily and maintained this until January 2nd 2017 when I tapered down to 150mg oral Baclofen daily - By now I had a NHS prescription and was dosing on 30mg Mylan tablets - I was able to put a decent enough case to my GP that she agreed to prescribe for me - This is fairly unheard of in the UK - I would like to thank tk for many of the case studies and information he posted on EOMA, which with all the information in the same place helped me greatly - My GP was so impressed she suggested she might try Baclofen on some of her other patients - I suggested this was not a good idea and have subsequently been criticised for this - I stand by this as although Balcofen will help people, their commitment to the programme cannot be guaranteed and after all, alcoholics are not the most reliable of patient by their very nature! The results to the patient following abuse are severe - For her to risk her reputation on an off label "cure", with the fuddy duddys of the GMC waiting to "bust her balls", is not a risk I would want her to take, on my say so - FWIW, I do think about this a lot....

    My side effects dwindled in the summer of 2017 with constipation being the major player but it was certainly less intense under Mylan as it was with Zaclofen, which was a relief! I was still suffering from confusion and some mania, the mania usually just after a dose

    In September 2017 I started tapering at 10mg less every 3 days until I got to a dosage of 60mg oral Baclofen daily - I spent a week at this level and then fluctuated between 0 and 60mg oral Baclofen a day - Currently i can take 60mg oral Baclofen, on demand with ZERO side effects

    My attitude towards alcohol had over the 18 months or so, changed dramatically - I despise alcohol and generally the effects is has on some individuals that consume too much - The bravado, the bullshit that goes with a pissed person - The smell, attitude and irresponsibility that some display is awful but a welcome reminder and incentive - The lack of hangovers is nice too.

    Why did Baclofen work for me? - The science is tedious to explain but the essence is that Baclofen allowed me to change my reward programme from a demand for alcohol to a demand for.....something different. Baclofen seriously reduced my anxiety and craving for alcohol as the reward. Simply Baclofen alleviated the anxiety I never knew i had - I think anyone who has has anxiety relieved will know what I mean - It's the relief which identifies the existence

    Responsibility;
    There is no point in taking Baclofen unless you are going to commit to a strict titration regime. Baclofen can (and will) hit abusers hard, whether you titrate too quickly or fail to maintain your dosage having established a routine - Baclofen is a long journey, patience is essential - Titrating too fast will not speed up the process, it will make the side effects worse and usually ends in failure and termination of your programme - Determination to succeed is the key - I knew that if I carried my course through I would succeed

    Side effects;
    Most, if not all have some side effects to Baclofen - Be it minor irritations or major inconveniences, we all get them - Just bear in mind if they get too much, one can taper to the previous dosage amount - Side effects tend to be more severe whilst consuming alcohol

    Reprogramming my default presets;
    I found it very important to change my focus' - (Obviously keeping out of pubs and away from alcohol was a given) Once Baclofen had got a hold on my anxiety and I could feel it (sleeping well at night was the telling sign for me - Not waking at two in the morning worrying about....? - nothing really) working I could get to work of the restructuring of my basic behaviour - The most important aspect was to nail the first drink, every afternoon when I arrived home I had a glass of wine - I replaced this with coffee and within a few weeks this became the norm and I could do this without thinking - Weekends and social occasions were more difficult, I basically shyed away from most social stuff for the first six months or so and for the following six months or so I vetted where and when I went out and who I socialised with - In fairness this was not that difficult as I am a fairly unsociable person anyway - I always take 30mg of oral Baclofen before I socialise even now as I find it helps greatly with my apparent social anxiety

    Currently I take 30 or 60mg oral Baclofen (Mylan) daily, depending on how I feel - Up top......My GP has suggested I dump Baclofen for a more "traditional" medication but I prefer Baclofen as it does the job and I know where I am with Baclofen

    The whole Baclofen scene is really quite depressing at the moment. You have got the business in France and despite having several blogs published i have only had two replys to the 47 emails and contact us requests I have sent - 20% of these were to Imperial College London, who have been procrastinating as recent as last year about their work with Baclofen - As a reminder I have sent some more!!!!

    I would strongly suggest anyone considering starting a Baclofen programme read THIS publication and the information on EOMA

    It is my opinion Baclofen works best for abstinence - Certainly in my case I still feel I am one drink away from a relapse. Baclofen has helped me get to the other side, it is my duty to hold up my end of the deal

    To be continued............

            Happy anniversary! What a wonderful report.

            Note to any new Baclofen users: THIS is how it is done correctly. Titrate up at a steady, sane level. Don't jump around with your dosage. After indifference, stay close to your switch dose and avoid alcohol for several months to a year.

              Bacman, an excellent post offering so much hope. I am so very pleased for you. You did it sensibly and responsibly. A lot of Bac users titrate up too quickly. Well done.

                Hello,

                I have been taking 90mg (daily) of Baclofen for approximately 2/3 months, plus recently (approximately 4 weeks) of Acamprosate 333mg 6 tabs a day. I have a follow up appointment with a nurse on 19th Jan. My question is how did you convince your GP to increase your dose to get to your goal and then taper down?

                  @dolphincat

                  Are you already prescribed these medications at these levels?

                  Are you still actively drinking?

                  Regards,

                    Hi Bacman,
                    Yes I have been prescribed these via LCAS with my GP's knowledge. Yes I am still drinking! First starting the meds, reduced my drinking mostly because I was tired and went to bed! Slept a lot better and had great spurts of being active initially. Not a social person, always drink at home alone.

                    One nurse (although a brief consultation) believes I am a habitual drinker and not addictive? Too much to go into this theory, but got me thinking as I have never experienced severe side effects whilst de-toxing in the past.

                    Best wishes,
                    Dolphincat

                      Hi There,

                      I would expect that to prescribe you with Baclofen at a fairly substantial dosage the prescribers would (I assume) have some understanding of how Baclofen works, the responsibilities of the prescription and also the need to titrate to a high dose to effect the programme successfully? I think it is important to understand WHY they have prescribed this for you - If it is because you asked for it and they said "OK", then this is one thing - To have prescribed 90mg oral Baclofen daily it sounds to me like they have some idea of the method and structure of the program

                      Has the provider mentioned that they may not want to increase your prescription further than 90mg oral Baclofen daily? You may or may not be aware that in France, prescribers are likely (or are i am not sure it is very up in the air at the mo) to have to restrict the maximum dosage to 100mg oral Baclofen daily

                      Are you able to stop drinking ? No, I expect - Therefore as far as I am concerned you are drinking against your will, therefore it is an addiction - If you need more and more of something to achieve the same result (buzz) you are an addict - Whatever!

                      So, to answer your question - It is my opinion it is most important to know your subject;

                      What is Baclofen and how does it work in alcohol addiction.

                      Baclofen Titration Schedule.

                      Understand about the dangers of Baclofen through accidental misuse. Using the links at the top of this page you can familiarise yourself with trials and documents supporting high dose Baclofen.

                      If you would like a copy of the original email I sent my GP, send me an email @ baclofenmanuk@gmail.com

                      If I was in your shoes and wanted to continue with a Baclofen program? - i would certainly tickle their ego's a fraction, along the lines of

                      "As you know I have been taking Baclofen for 2 or three months and this I am finding is certainly helping me as I am findings my cravings waning slightly. The Baclofen program requires a titration. I feel I am ready to go to the next stage as although i have had some of the typical side effects, I have managed these well so i would like you to support me further to a level of (say) 180mg oral Baclofen daily which I have read and had personal anecdotal reports I would expect to see some further improving results" - etc.

                      Or the like.....

                      Re Tapering - My GP is unaware I have tapered down - She will prescribe as long as I ask her to as the results are testament to her convictions. The simple reason I have not told her is because I do not want the discussion with her that I should swap Baclofen for an anti depressant for my anxiety which she has alluded to before

                      Regards,

                            Dear Baclofenman,

                            I have been taking back for 9 months now, getting up to 100mgs daily which I have cut down to 75 mgs. It was wonderful for my anxiety attacks, helped a bit with drinking. Could sometimes go a few days AF but then bing on 2-3 bottles of wine. My major problem, apart from lethargy is an awful cough, stuffy nose and sore eyes. Even worse incontinence. Do you think these side effects are likely to wear off? I so want to stick with this but it is very hard. Thank you.

                              Re: Baclofenman - My Story of Baclofen Two years in.

                              G'day Elizabeth

                              I suffered from all the side effects you are experiencing - My experience was that these tend to improve as you go further along the path, however unfortunately this is the "reward" for your anxiety reduction - Do you find a reduction in your side effects between 75 and 100 mg?

                              The issue as I see it is that my anxiety caused me to drink to feel fresh headed - The drink then caused me anxiety - Baclofen allowed me to drink (as it subdued my anxiety) to a point where I could make the decision to stop drinking altogether - It is a mind training thing, Baclofen does some of the work, I had to retrain my thought process for the rest

                              One thing I do feel now is I have replaced the addiction of alcohol with the "addiction" of waking up in the morning with a clear fresh head rather than the hazy mess and finding myself knackered at midday!

                              Obviously as you have found once you pop the cork you cannot stop - I and everyone on this site understand this - This is why (there certainly used to be) heated debate in the abstain V's moderation debate. I am (have to be) an abstainer however I have a massive respect for those who can successfully moderate - HA - I think this is because I know I cannot but wish I could!

                              The only advice I can give you is to find something to take your mind off the booze after you have achieved a couple of days off - i watched soooo many series on TV with a coffee, sometimes when I was really going to burst I went to bed, sometimes at midday even! I got in my car and just drove and drove knowing that this would mean i could not drink, well I could but I am suitably respectful of the laws of the land! - I looked at my children and thought "what do they think of me", pissed, asleep, making stupid decisions and staggering around -

                              The side effect went completely when I had reduced my intake to IIRC 30mg a day - I still pop a 30mg dose every now and again when I expect I may be pressured into taking a drink

                              I do hope this helps you Elizabeth - Please keep with Baclofen, It does work.

                              I am not sure where in Oz you are but if you have not visited Dr Amanda's site I recommend you do

                              Best regards
