    I need to detox alone...how?

Hi all, thank you for giving of your time to help so many. I am in a rather urgent situation and could realy use some advice from those who may have been here. I am a heavy drinker, recently and daily for years. I have high blood pressure and at the moment pneumonia as well. I have found in the last few days that I am entering detox within 6 hours of a drink or less. I know that I can be vlulderable to the more severe effects and complications. I Must quit! I can't afford to go to a detox center or hospital so I self medicate with a small amount of alcohol every couple of hours. I plan on gradualy reducing this amount over time untill my body becomes less dependant. I don't know if this will work but can't see much alternative at the moment. My husband is absent but I have teen sons that can help. Frankly, I am frightened of what may happen to me physically. Does anyone have informed advice about this type of aproach? Thank you.

I can only tell you what I did. I went to the doctor. I had to suck up a $68 charge, but I would have spent that on booze anyway. I got a prescription for Ativan. It is a sedative. I got it at Walmart for 4 dollars for a month's worth. I have never been able to taper off alcohol with alcohol, but that's just me. I hope u feel better soon.:l

Thank you, I went to the doctor at the tune of $250. and got told to enter a rehab center. I wish I could, realy, but that is not possible. I am actually more worried about the serious withdrawl effects. Again, thank you.

        Hi Binny,

Welcome! Have you seen the sticky at the top of this forum about alcohol withdrawal? It has info about possible side effects which you might find useful. I don't have any experience of tapering off alcohol either but hopefully someone will come along who does.

            Binny,

There are a few on this site who did it that way.

Gradually reducing how much, how often. It does work but it is difficult.

You can do it if you really must, though.

            Good luck!!

[COLOR=SeaGreen]I was on a real binge when I deceided to stop this insanity...I got Valium to make me sleepy....I think Valarian.melatonin, chamomile tea and natural sedatives is a better choice. Then I forced my self to start with half the AL(I watered down lite beer with ice)and made myself drink a large glass of ice water in between.LESS AL more and more water....I went with a friend to a outpatient rehab....What a joke and waste of money...I think you would do well to go to a MED clinic and tell them what you aree doing...While there, get yourself some Antabuse[so you must think before you drink....Dr. will not as judgemental as you think. You are reaching out for HELP,after all.Med. Clinic is not as expensive as buying BOOZE or a funeral, which would have happened to me if I could not stop the madness!!!!Please post and let us know how you are doing....I CARE,I REALLY DO !!!!!/COLOR]

I did taper off alcohol once successfully, but I stuck to beer while I was doing it. Started out with 4 a day with a few hours between. Then less and less. I remained AF for 4 days. Just don't fool yourself into thinking that you have it under control because you did it. That's what I did. I was wrong. If you're doing it for detox, in an attempt to quit, I wish you all the best and God speed. Don't get frightened if you get the shakes a little. Cause you will. Give it a few hours. You'll still be shaking between beers, but I didn't experience halucinations or anything more sevier than heavy shaking. If you feel you need to start with more than 4, then that's your call. But that's what I did. If you haven't already, I would advise you to go to your family doc and get some blood tests just for your own peace of mind.
                God bless and stay strong.
                P.S.
Using the chat room helps a lot as well. Keeps your mind off of the booze and get some great first hand advice.

                  I need to detox alone...how?

                  Binny,

Please keep us posted. I know how scary this is.

I ended up going to a hospital detox to get of this darn drug. It helped a lot but if it had not been an option, I would have weaned down.

I absolutely do know if I had quit cold turkey, I would have seized. That is really dangerous.

However, trying to wean down is hard because once you take the drink, you want more, you WANT MORE. It is difficult.

But, like I said, if you are determined, you can do it.

Please keep us informed. We do all care. Been there done that, Binny.

                  Love,
                  Cindi

Hi Binny, there are some detox centers now that use chlonindine or another bp med to help as the bp goes high during detox. Water, juice all of the vit. B's. There is a thread somewhere on this subject. Good Luck and let us know how you are.

                        Hilary,

My non-insured daughter went to a doctor for help. Nope. Nada. Nothing.

                        "Go to AA"

This is the plight of the uninsured alcoholic. Her livlihood depends on her being able to cut hair and do highlights, etc.

Do they care? Nope. It is her problem. She put herself there and must get out herself.

                        LOL

Do you want to sit in the chair of someone whose hands are shaking so bad it is visible? Nope, I think not.

She was in tears the last time I took her to a doctor. He told her, "Have you been to AA?" She said "Yes but that doesn't help the shaking hands." He said, "Sorry, I can't help you...
                        "

Our (USA) medical system sucks. It really does.

She is an incredibly hard working, dedicated professional who happens to be an alcoholic. Oh, and she tries hard to make the best of it.

                        Love,

i had to detox by myself and to tell you the truth it was hard but do able .. what you need to do is get all the al out of the house.. you have your kids there so they can help you .so it only take 72 hours for al to get out of your system and you need to eat as much as you can.. bread and soup.if that the only thing you can get down..drink lots of water. tea with honey and juice vc.. that will take care of your sugar by that you are taking care of the craving for alcohol.. and there is one weird thing that i did and it help with the shakes .. is put rubbing al or isopropyl alcohol on your hands and thats what help me go cold turkey..
and it is all possiable. just give it your best .. you can do this..good luck
peace , love and god bless

                            I need to detox alone...how?

                            Hi Binny,
I too have tried the weaning off AL gradually and has not worked for me although I was a bit more successful when I switched wine for a lower strenght like beer that I dont like as much. I think a lot about the withdrawals depends on how much you have been drinking and for how long. You mention that it started recently? but not sure how much you are drinking. Always safest to get medical opinion but I know what you are syaing about the cost. Not an option for me either - I am always looking at the amount of celebrities checking in into rehab and paying top dollar and wondering what happens to those that need it so bad and cannot afford it.
I am currently going AF and detoxing by myself. It is very very hard but I generally was an evening drinker so don't feel it too bad during the day but by night, different story.
I am lucky in that I do not find the days too bad as I have young kids to look after and then what I do is kind of get my husband to take over at night - put the kids to bed if necessary, I go to bed if I have to, he feeds me if I can't be up to cooking etc.
If you have two grown sons in the house can they take over for awhile - could you go to bed, have baths, get your sons to feed you simple stuff like toast and soup - I bought a thing called complan which is a kind of liquid soup/drink designed for people who have been sick to, keep the fluids going. I am basically treating it like I am sick and need the help because I am sick.
                            Wishing you the best
                            :h

                              I need to detox alone...how?

I understand your words, so very much.

I have been through withdrawls from many different drinking sprees. Of course, straight Vokda 24/7 was the worse to ween off. There was no cutting down. Tried the same with wine, then was in trouble and had to suffer withdrawls.
I have been dumping champagne in for a time, tried to quit and only went through the discomfort if I had started from the early hours.

I have gone through medical detox and the medicines were alright.
But, I have done this privately m a n y times. Tried to ween off, but, as spoken, it was still alot going into my system.

Recently, I have experience some discomforted that started 3 days ago (AF since the 10th)
I have to share, I have tried everything, most recently accupuncture for I was border line about to have seizures, never been so frightened. But, it did pass.

This will pass for you, dear one. What helped me was alot of Vitamin Water and The Aminos Acids and Gaba. They have been a wonder to me, bringing such relief. I also have been taking the True Calm and what a difference.

It is the 3rd day withdrawls not passing, as I tried to ween, that would finally send me into the next bout.

I pray comfort your way. You can do this for it is doable. You can, you deserve to be at peace and free of the torment.

                              Feeling for you,

                              Karen
