I haven't posted on here in a while but have a couple of questions.

I'm 4 days AF and am planning to have bloodwork done tomorrow morning, will signs of alcohol or alcohol abuse show up?

My dr. put me on effexor XR a couple of weeks ago for mild depression and anxiety (panic attacks due to AL) and I feel like I'm losing my mind. Mood swings, irritability.....has anyone had the same reactions? Or is it all withdrawal???

I'm probably not the best person to answer your Q but someone told me that it takes 72 hours for AL to leave your system but not sure on that one. I don't know anything about effexor either but I know I am 4 days AF today (and have been more than that before) and I know for sure that I get irritable and mood swings like crazy, it def. seems to be a big part of withdrawal.

Not sure about the lasting of the AL, but I can tell you my husband seems irritable and is having mood swings since he has not had a drink for 7 days.. they just come out of no where and go away as quickly as they come. I just decided to hug him and not make a "thing" out of it. Good luck.

The first 3 weeks I felt moody. It is a HUGE adjustment for the body and mind. Take deep breaths, drink lots of water and eat well. Exercise will help you too.

It takes about 4-6 weeks before you start feeling better on Effexor. So I am pretty sure it isn't the anti-depressant.

Hang in there. There will be lots of emotions and ups and downs for quite a while.

Very unlikely that alcohol itself will show up in blood work after 36 or so hours. The effects of alcohol... that's another matter! Routine lab work probably will not be looking for alcohol in the blood, anyway...

At 4 days AF it is not at ALL surprising that your emotions are all over the place. Gotta distract yourself, and ride them out! They will smooth out.

It depends on how long you've been drinking and how much. One thing that may show up if you've been a chronic drinker is elevated liver enzymes. That's about all I know. Good luck and I'm 4 days AF, too, buddy!

It's perfectly normal to be emotional on day 4.....just get through it. Get through day 5 and you should start feeling better.....just be relentless about not drinking. You only want to go through the first few days one time.....

I'm on effexor and I know it reduces my mood swings! I also know that when I first stop drinking for a few day then the mood swings are terrible! Stick with it and you will notice the improvements....

Thanks for all your responses. I'm back on day 4, stopped the Effexor on Friday and feel good as far as that's concerned. Went to Dr. yesterday who tried to put me on Xanax. Funny I don't have a problem poisioning myself with Al but not to drugs???? Go figure. Still can't sleep even with 6mg of melatonin and I feel groggy all day so don't feel the benefits yet of AF.......hangover versus grogginess, doesn't feel good any way.

Benzos are said to be helpful in withdrawing from alcohol--the longer acting ones like Valium and Librium rather than the short acting ones like Xanax which wear off pretty fast.

I took effexor and it made me terrible ill. May need another med....I was swtched to Lexapro. BUT, going sober HURTS so AFM may be correct as well. Ask your doc honey.

Certainly the alcohol is at least partially responsible for how you are feeling. Fortunately, it should go away fairly soon. First week is really hard with physical symptoms.

Effexor could also be a cause. I was on effexor for one week and got quite ill...very anxious, dizzy, nauseous. Effexor is different from SSRI anitdepressants such as Lexapro, celexa, prozac. In addition to being a seratonin uptake inhibitor, Effexor also works on norepinephrine. From my experience, it is a pretty powerful drug.
