How can I help my husband
Thanks for all the replies. Husband went to the docs on Monday, he said if he still feels sick to go back next week, prescribed vitamins and something for the sickness. He wont give him anything for the depression he feels as that is no use when he still has a drink. He had blood tests done earlier in the year and has to go back in February for more. There was some liver damage but not greatly so. So the outcome is he has to try and cut back and maybe he will feel better, he doesnt want to take the drugs as he didnt like them, so I dont suppose we are any further forward, in saying that he appeared a bit better today, not so sick, so we will see from here what happens. Thanks again for the care and concern.

How can I help my husband
Hi Jinty,
Well, I think your GP will most likely be on the right track for treatment, but please seek another opinion if you are not happy.
Liver damage: The liver is a wonderful organ and does a terrific job at repairing itself. But what your GP may not have told you is that by the time damage is noticed, (as in the case of your husband), the liver is really starting to struggle to metabolise all the toxins getting pumped through it, and it is increasingly difficult for the tissue to repair and renew itself.
It really is a question for your husband to decide.... does he want to live a bit longer or die a fairly painful death through liver failure? It is not pretty for the patient or the family.I've been there.
You cannot afford to "pussyfoot" around with this.
Has your GP actually said that abstaining from alcohol is the cause of his nausea?
This reply is more blunt than the others. It needs to be.

How can I help my husband
Just to give an update, my husband was finally admitted to hospital Dec. 23rd and they started a detox, can anyone tell me what to expect after that for the next few weeks, no one is very helpful at the hospital and I havent seen the consultant yet.

How can I help my husband
My husband came out of detox sort of numb. Don't expect heavy life discussions or decisions early on. Be patient. Encourage him to follow any rituals of sobriety that he may have learned in any provided group sessions. You say this is detox, so remember they may not offer much rehab services. They are nursing his body back to health, but his brain will need more time. Most successful folks follow up detox with either dependency group sessions or one on one therapy.
Be kind to yourself.
