If I know there's a problem my God in heaven there is a problem. ,can anyone relate or direct me? I mean do I have to be half dead to get others to wake up?

      Hi there, welcome to you.
Yes, I have heard this happen before and it must be awful to feel you dont have the support there from the medical profession.
I am not sure how much you are drinking, but maybe you can do this without meds? Many people here have done it either by going "cold turkey" or by reducing their alcohol consumption gradually. Neither way is easy, but they are doable.
Of course if you are a very heavy drinker you need to be careful of seziures while withdrawing.

i don't know either but are there alcohol treatment offices or facilities where you could get an appt with a doctor...that sounds kinda scary to me to walk into a 'facility'....or how about a local AA chapter...members there may know where to direct you and you wouldn't have to become an AA member unless you wanted to....just ideas i may be totally wrong...are you near a college campus? they usually have a drug and alcohol office or something and could maybe give you a doctor's name

          Hi Helpme,
When I went to a doctor to ask for antebuse he nearly fell over. He did however prescribe it.
I know that some doctors might be concerned about giving Topamax, particularly if they have limited exposure to psycho active medication.

Try seeking out someone with experience in this field.

I have only ever used antebuse and it has certainly been a deterent and silenced that little voice that tells me that I deserve a drink after a hard day.

Do Nartrexerone, Camprell, zofran and therapy.... sorry for the sp...

It's only an idea.... check the details you have to carry a card as if you need immediate surgery, the drugs i.e. opiates will not work to put you out ... so you need a different drug.

I'd never do anti buse... but that's just me...
however, I can't throw up... so that's a problem for me...

"Given your appearance" - what does that mean??

I'm thinking that's a good thing - that you SO don't look like a drunk?!

I think, after looking at myself in the mirror after a tough day at 3 AM... that I DO look like a freakin' drunk.

                OH dear.

                Perhaps I'll shower tomorrow.

I don't mean to make light of what you wrote... really. Just seemed odd to me.

I had the same kind of response from the medical profession so I bought my meds on line from River Pharmacy...I found them to be a reliable source and will continue to use them.

                    help,

My physician was no help either. What about a psychiatrist? In the US they can prescribe meds.

The thing is, Addiction is a "specialty", just as a man would not go to an OBGYN Doctor, for headaches, the same is true to think that any doctor is trained to treat addiction is simply not true. Though doctors have some knowlege of addiction, there is far more to the treatment of addiction than just prescribing medications. We know that there are multilple issues concerning addiction, curbing the cravings is only one step....even if drugs work, at least for a time in curbing the "craving", other areas must be treated as well, if one is to gain long term sobriety.

I know that online pharmacies are used by many here and that is certainly a personal choice, but, I would give some thought to what is really needed in the treatment of this problem. Is an individual truly qualified to self prescribe? Where is the rest of the treatment going to come from? Though one might get some immediate relief from the cravings, is this the long term answer? And, what are the long term affects of being on self prescribed prescription drugs?

These are just my thoughts and concerns, they are not mean to be a "judgement call" on anyone else's decisions. This is just another point of view!

I think Kate brings up some good points.

I would just add that you should have it as an option if you want to go that route.

We had someone post on here recently saying how great it was to have a doctor checking her while she was on meds. You know there can be interactions and side effects. Also the online stuff is not necessarily reliable.

You should research it all and know what these effects are, then as Kate suggested, be aware that most doctors won't have the necessary knowledge about addiction. You could find an addiction specialist or a psychiatrist. And you could go armed with the literature as suggested by Roberta Jewell in the book My Way Out.

I also think there might be some regional/cultural issues here. In some places, people are focused on the 12 step regime and don't really believe in using medication for alcoholism. But I don't see why it is ok for things like cigarrette addiction and not for booze. It sure does seem to have helped a lot of people on this site. I would consider it if I had a serious problem, serious enough to make the side effects worthwhile.

                          Good advice

Both Nancy and Kate bring up some excellent points. Starting off with drugs before being properly assessed can be dangerous. When a Doctor is in training they only have a minimal exposure to addiction treatment (something that hopefully will change) If you live in a large city most hospitals will have an addictive treatment facility. If not most will be able to point you in the right direction. The important thing here for now is YOU know you have a problem and believe it or not that is one of the biggest hurdles you will face. There are many directions to try. I just googled " I have a drinking problem" and got over a million sites, I clicked on "am I an alcoholic.> then, find help> find help> find a treatment program in your community I live in a small town in Montana and it pulled up 6 results, As suggested go to an A/A meeting and talk to someone with some sobriety I am sure they will be able to give you the name of Doctor (you don't have to talk at an a.a. meeting if you don't want to if you by any chance are called on to share just say "I am new here I would rather just listen for now") That applies to anyone nervous of attending a.a. meetings. Its not as scary as you can imagine. You are headed in the right direction keep looking and keep coming back here.
Best of luck to you. if you have any other questions by all means feel free to contact me.
