    Liver Pain?

If you goggle Edgar Cayce you will see that he recommends Castor Oil packs and a warm heating pad to heal the liver...also gently massaging it will help bring blood to the the area and speed the healing process. I love the product Liv52 and buy mine on Ebay...my liver in working fine now...It was a mess and I was in fear of liver failure...it is a self healing organ if you stop poisoning it .

      Liver Pain?

      Hi All

Newbie here, but felt compelled to join after reading this topic. I too have spent sometime looking for what could be causing this ache, and even thought I was imagining it. it?s a relief to see I?m not imagining it and something is not right, but looking at other posts it appears that complete abstinence can reverse it.

I am going to see my Dr on Monday where I too will be completely honest with him. I have drunk nearly every day for the last 2 years, ranging from 4 or 5 pints a night in the week, going up to 7 or 8 at weekends (just reading that is quite scary!). Prior to this I would go days without a drink because of shift work, then usually binge drink for a day when I was off.

It has caught up with me, I get the pain being discussed, along with feeling exhausted by about 2 in the afternoon. The ironic thing is a few beers after work seem to increase my energy levels!? I know I suffer from anxiety which gets worse the next day if I have been drinking the previous evening.

I went 8 weeks sober recently, (fell off the wagon a couple of weeks ago) and noticed the pain subsiding, but there was one particular day about 4 weeks into that dry spell where it came back with a vengeance and I felt ill all day. It cleared up the following day. Its also worth mentioning that on a couple of occasions I have been lying in bed at night and all of a sudden had a sharp burst of pain in the same area that lasted no more than a second. It was very painful and can only be described as having a hot poker shoved in my side! After a heavy session, the next day usually comprises of palpitations, increased levels of anxiety, the twinging sensation discussed, complete lack of energy and, when going to sleep the following evening, suffering from 3 or 4 hypnic jerks, which is where you come too with a startle just as you are about to fall asleep! At the age of 32, these symptoms have been worrying me hence the 8 weeks abstinence. Then I started feeling better and thought ?well a couple won?t hurt?. And they didn?t , but then a couple turned into 3 or 4 and before I knew where I was I was drinking the same as before. I have a full time job, but I know my drinking is a problem if it causes these effects to my body.

This site has inspired me to the point of actually feeling happier. The last couple of days have been hell and I have convinced myself days were numbered!! This has given me the courage and motivation to go and see the Dr and find out what damage I am likely to have done. I will also climb back onto the wagon, but remember that the next time it goes away (if I?m lucky enough it does) that its not the bodies green light to start drinking again.

Sorry for the long first post - I don?t usually waffle on like this - honest J

Best wishes to you all - a great site. I will let you know the result of the Dr appointment.

        Liver Pain?

        Hello everyone,

I just ran across this thread, have read through it and am suprised that no one has mentioned other possible causes for right upper quadrant abdominal pain. We all have a gall bladder and a pancreas tucked into that area as well. All 3 of these organs can be irritated by alcohol use, which probably explains the lack of significant changes in liver enzyme levels.

During my nursing career I don't think I ever ran into a patient that c/o liver pain. They were in for detox and probably had so much else going on at the time...........
Personally, I can bring that RUQ pain on simply by ingesting fatty food, spicy food and of course alcohol. My blood work has always been normal. I can totally eliminate that pain by consuming a low fat diet, avoiding the spicy stuff and of course avoiding alcohol.

It's always safest to have things checked out medically. I just wanted to put my thoughts out there so you know that you can help yourself tremendously by making a few dietary changes.

        Just my 2 cents.........
        Have a great weekend

wow just read through everyones posts and how scary.
i have been in pain on and off for years some worse than others. i once remember waking up, after a full on weekend, in a hot sweats and excruciating pain in the liver area, just as jriver explained like a hot poker, it lasted a few hours i was petrafied. the pain went and i didn't get it again for years. now i have almost a constant pain in the liver area and i get a very sore back around the kidney area especially in the morning, once i have got up and had some water the pain goes but i have an ache in the stomache, it isn't swollen and i have had tests over the years and all came back ok. i am on day six af and hope to carry on, and hope that my liver and kidneys will become better, the cravings are going all though on gard for them coming back. i am eating healthy foods and drinking water and fruit jucies, i am hopeing i will feel an improvement in the next few weeks, i wish everyone well, reading these posts today has made me feel i am not alone or imagining it off to buy some milk thistle monday.

                Liver Pain?

Lavande, your expertise is greatly appreciated here. in fact I have a question if you don't mind: would high sugar consumption also cause RUQ pain?

                  Liver Pain?

I had gallstone pain about 3 years ago. It was agony, I had to phone emergency doctor, a scan was arranged but I never went, too scared. Antibiotics cleared the pain tho'. Apparently you can do a home flush, with citrus juices and olive oil. If it is gallstones, that might clear them, anything else really needs checked out.

                        Liver Pain?

                        Hi

Well I went to the Dr's and was completly honest with them in terms of average alcohol consumption, the pain (in my liver???), and how I was feeling generally.

He didnt seem as concerned about the pain as I was, and put it down to a torn muscle (even after I told him that it had been there in excess of 6 months and got more noticable when drinking alcohol). He said that the sensation would probably be the same if I drank 4 pints of water in the space of 3 hours....might try that to prove him wrong.

Anyway, he prodded and pressed my stomach area and said that if my liver was getting out of sorts he would be able to feel that it would be 'harder' than it should be and that mine was soft. But he is sending me for blood tests and a chest xray, and said that a lot the other symptoms are linked to increased anxiety and not eating a balanced diet (guilty on both counts). He also said that I should be seeking ways to find out why I was habitualitly drinking as a form of socialising, rather than finding other avenues to spend free time. (I think that was his polite way of suggesting councilling!).

I will let you know the result of the bloods, but hope this goes someway in eleviating others fears. As already mentionmed, Liver problems do not usually present pain wise until your in a very bad way.

                        Regards

                        Jon

                          Liver Pain?

                          Liver pain

Hello, I have experienced a very similar pain. I actually have it right now. My liver/bloodwork also came back normal but all I know is when I drink, I feel the pain. When I'm sober for awhile I dont. Just like Accountable for Me said, I'm simply affraid that I've harmed myself. I have also noticed brown spots in my eyes when the pain is present. Anyone else notice this? Thanks.

                            Liver Pain?

It can be pancreas, gall bladder, bowel pain. Yes thats about where the colon does a little flip and can go into spasms which can be anything from mild aches to severe. Its call Irritable Bowel Syndrome and episodes can be brought on by alcohol. Not necessarily dangerous but painful. Still with all the other stuff in that area its a good idea to get it all checked out. Ive had the gamut from ultrasound - ct scans and nothing big showing up - in my case its IBS and it is painful. Due to the stress in my life right now its almost an everyday occurrence but is somewhat manageable. We are fragile vessels.

                              Liver Pain?

pancreas is on the other side right?

well, at any rate my pain/swelling on my right side still flares up when I eat like a pig. After overeating rich foods earlier this week I had the swelling/pain come back although much more mild than when I was drinking. it still bothers me that no doctor has been able to explain this. the area feels firm sometimes and softer other times. wierd! and the area of swelling is quite large ranging from my centerline to my far right rib cage. I wish someone had an actual answer for what this is.
