    Cymbalta

Has anyone here ever taken cymbalta? My doctor just put me on 30mg for depression and I'm finding that I'm more depressed now and feeling completely stoned and numb all the time. It has only been a week but I am wondering if this is just not a good idea for me or if I need to give it another week?

    Any advice?

Hi Uni, I have never taken cymbalta but I have taken prozac and it took at least 8 weeks to settle. They usually say that 4 weeks and you should be noticing a difference.
It may not be suiting you but also it may just be settling in. See how you go for while longer, but if you are at all worried, then get back in touch with your doctor.
    Good luck

      Hi Uni,
30 mg is kind of a high dose to start with, I would think. I take citalopram (generic for Celexa) and I started the 1st few weeks or so at 20 mg, then moved up to 40.

I heard a medical seminar sponsored by Cymbalta and they said "not to be used w/ alcohol". That's the extent of my knowledge on the subject, Uni.
I am on Celexa also- 20mg (I went on vacation last week and forgot my meds for 8 days without any adverse effect). I think maybe I should consider stopping completely?

Kriger, I also went 7 or 8 days without taking it (ran out of script and kept forgetting to pick up refill). I am also considering getting off of it, mostly cause this is the last refill and will need a new script -- and a new dr. Not going back to the bitchy psychiatrist!

            Hey Uni :-)

I've tried various antidepressants over the years, some of them have not agreed with me at all..

If you are still feeling bad after a week, I'd go back to see my doctor, you might need to try a different drug..

Uni, everyone takes to every med, food, experience differently. I've been taking Cymbalta several years now, since it first came out. I've been up to 90mg daily, and have to say I was SO depressed for so long before I began it, but now I really have, in the last year or so, turned the corner and become SO much better. I had a talk just last week with my neurologist, who told me the antidepressant effect of Cymbalta only works up to 60mg for about 80% of people taking it. 1, 2 % of the other 20% can have a positive effect from taking more, but taking 60% is really the norm. It also helps curb cravings (hunger, etc.) so that's a plus. I've not had ANY bad side affects.

                Hi Uni...

I just weaned myself off Cymbalta. I had a VERY hard time when I first started. I was sick for 2 weeks. It eventually went away, but another thing was constipation. I had constant constipation.

I didn't like how I felt on it, so now I am doing nothing. I have been on antidepressant for about 4 years and this is about the time that my drinking started getting worse. I wonder if there's a correlation?

I actually heard that there was a co-relation between anti-depressants and drinking. I know when I took prozac about 6 years ago that I craved alcohol and found that my drinking increased.

I know that I cannot drink on the cymbalta which is a plus as it will help me to stay AF but I really am not enjoying this blah feeling that it is giving me. We'll see how it goes, I am really not a big fan of anti-depressants to begin with however I do know they serve a purpose. I have just not found them to be a benefit to me yet, maybe I just need to find the right one.

Uni, I don't like taking drugs either. But this past year, I really needed. Think of it as ODAT with the ADs -- take them for awhile, but don't worry that you'll be on them forever. If this one doesn't work, then are plenty others to try to get the right fit. Just like a therapist, or a good bra!
Re ADs and drinking, I remember that some ADs can increase cravings for AL in those over 35 or 40 (?) My details may be wrong here -- there were posts on here a while back.

My experience with Cymbalta was that it took me from depressed and confused about my feelings to suicidal. I got off it and went back to just being depressed. It was torture for my husband and myself. He tried it also and got markedly more depressed also.

I have never tried that but take citilopram (sp? - generic for Celexa) and have no problem. I do it takes awhile to get benefits though from that. Maybe Cymbalta is the same? Or maybe you need something different. I have also taken Lexapro but my insurance wasn't covering that so my Dr. switched me to the celexa generic. I am afraid to stop taking it b/c I am soooooo much better than I use to be. I am sure the AF is helping also (although that is pretty recent).

For me if an antidepressant doesn't work in the beginning it never does. My favorite antidepressant is Lexapro but now I only take SAMe from the health food store and I'm very happy with it. Good luck with whatever you decide :l Things WILL get better!
