    A question about withdrawal

Of the few times I have detoxed one of them was with a vitamin program specifically for newly sober people. The program is called "Seven Weeks to Sobriety" You can Google it and find lots. I have a lot of allergies and I was allergic to some of the sups, but it was my most mellow detox. I still have some of the sups. The multis are great because they are specially formulated for the newly sober- then there are tons of others. I think it was 56 pills pills a day for six weeks. It took "massive doses" to a whole new level, but my urine wasn't dayglow yellow for the first few days so I must of been using all that up at first. Too many of them caused me too much trouble so I didn't stick with it.

I'll hit the B1, B12 and C hard. They are all water soluble, so you can't really overdo it. It's only A,D,E and K that you have to watch out for and even those you have to overdo for a long time to be a problem. Along with the meds, I hope it goes well. Thanks for all the advice.

      A question about withdrawal

Well, it took until now, but I fnially went for the detox last night. Sunday, I had to bring my wife to the airport at 6:30 am (which was tough of course- in fact I don't know how I did it). Now that she was gone I was "free" to let loose. Drank until I passed out, got up in the late afternoon and drank until I passed out again. Woke up around 11:00 and almost did it again, but I need this job. I was a little late, but somehow I dragged my ass in.

Got home at 6:00 pm and hadn't had anything to drink all day. Threw up. I have to fly on Friday, so it's detox time. Baclofen is supposed to help and I had taken one in the morning and one around 3:00. It didn't help all that much- or maybe it would have been worse without it. I had everything though- shaking, sweating, freezing, anxiety and a wee bit of halucinating. Couldn't eat at all, but was able to sip water. Took one more Baclofen at 10:00pm and finally tried to sleep at 2:00am. Slept about half the time between 2:00-6:00 but that was it. I took the vitamins at night and in the morning.

I don't know if it's the vitamins, the Baclofen or if it just hasn't started yet, but it's 3:00pm now and apart from being really tired, I only feel half like shit. And may hands are hardly trembling (normally they are shaking by late morning).

More vitamins and a second Baclofen now and I'll see how it goes tonight. Wish me luck; I'll check in tomorrow.

Pete, thanks for checking in. Sounds like things are going a bit better than expected - that's great. Hopefully you'll get through it pretty OK. Keep on doing what you're doing and, yes, check in tomorrow... And as much as you can! It's a good fight - keep on fighting!
AF for two years. Slight relapse. Working on it at the moment.

            A question about withdrawal

Thanks guys. It's the end of my work day now and I have taken more vitamins and Baclofen and I feel OK. I mean my head is not 100% but even though last night sucked, I feel OK. This is the time I normally start drinking and you know what I am coming away from this positive experience thinking? "Well, if I can get over the hard part in one or two days, that means I can drink tonight and tomorrow; tough it out on Thursday and still be in shape for the family reunion Friday night". Sigh.........how can AL scew up logic so badly?

I'll go read more on the consequenses thread over in "getting started" before I go home.

Pete, glad it is going better than expected. Have you read the threads on baclofen? Maybe you can do that tonight to keep out of trouble. My recommendation, from all I have been reading there as well as the various links posted on those threads, would be to keep taking the baclofen as it helps with detox and with cutting desire to drink.

                    A question about withdrawal

I think seeing your doctor (who is, hopefully!, understanding) would be the best thing. He/she shouldn't look down their nose at you since you're TRYING to stop!!

Maybe a scrip for anti-anxiety meds would help, like some have suggested.

And the old "BREATHE" thing is good to calm down when you catch yourself being fidgety... Stop, breathe in for 8 counts, hold a sec or two, breathe out for 8 counts.

GOOD LUCK! (And have a good vacation - lucky You!!)

                      A question about withdrawal

                      Hi Pete,
Sorry about the shakes, but I'm glad you got some good responses.
I'm on Campral and it's working pretty well so long as I remember to take the right number of pills at the right time. Sometimes I feel so strong I haven't taken it - and have slipped. But July is a new start! My record - out of 17 days, 13 were AF. Only one really bad slip, others were moderate.
I'm also taking milk thistle, morning primrose oil, folic acid, magnesium. a multi-vitamin and calcium citrate.
For your situation I'd be careful about mixing bac and campies - please talk to a doc before mixing.

Success is not final, failure is not fatal, it is the courage to continue that counts.
                      AF since May 6, 2010

                        TREMBLING HANDS

Pete1;637399 wrote: Does anyone know what makes your hands tremble? Is it low blood sugar or something that causes the shakes? Last time I detoxed was on a vacation and my hands were still trembling when we got home two weeks later. I had to have my wife write for me etc. Now we are going on vacation again and I want to (have to) do it sober and hopefully stay sober after the detox period, but I would really like to curb the trembling hands.

I have some Baclofen on the way, does anyone know if that will help?
Hi there- Magnesium deficiency in alcoholics can cause severe trembling, also check your blood pressure (another prob w/ alcoholics)! Got that info through Seven Weeks to Sobriety by Joan Mathews Larson--a nutritional guide to help recovery. you can find this book @ just about any bookstore. Hope this helps! I have taken the magnesium so I feel I can give you a thumbs up on this.

                          Trembling Hands

As simple as this may sound, magnesium deficiencies may be a big part of your problem. I got this info from a book called Seven Weeks to Sobriety by Joan Mathews Larson. It's a nutritional guide to help fight alcoholism. i personally did this and it helped me a lot w/in a few days. But I do agree, be careful and if needed go to the doc. Hope this helps

PS. I have been up here a while, but forgot my name so I had to register again- just wanted you to know I've been where you are.

                            trembling hands 2

Also- don't forget to check blood pressure! I have have high blood pressure which will go up and cause me to shake if I forget to take my meds. HB is another obvious problem for drinkers.

                                A question about withdrawal

The shakes are apart from vitamin/mineral/water deficiency, caused by the nervous system rebounding. Best way I heard it being described is that basically your nervous sysyetm has been operating under heavy sedation (alcohol) for some time, so when you remove the stuff your nerves go through the roof. I also believe there is also damage done to the nervous as well.

Depending on how long/much you've been drinking shakes can last for 6-12 months.
