Hi I have been visiting this site for nearly a year now, in the past year I have had some success in moderating my drinking habits and I feel comortable & confident in social situations with out al..........Now the scary bit i'am still stumbling, when I do chose to drink I'm not handling it well at all and often cannot stop my latest episode was at a works function where I blacked out completely for the whole evening, I wasn't knocking em back I drank some water inbetween, there was no lead up to the black out one minute I was fine the next it was the following day, the outcome of the black out is too embrassing to go into detail about I am left feeling ashamed and scared that I cannot rememer the entire evening or the events that happened because of it...............now I think I am faced with no choice but to abstain completely.........I have decided to go 30 days al free I am on day 3 today............ I would appreciate your thought, comments opnions please love to you all I don't post but have found your support amazing since I found this site xTags: None

Yes, Welcome Phoebe. You have come to a great place for support and to sort through your issues with alcohol. Blackouts are frightening and normally result in terrible consequences. Many of us here, have experienced blackouts. With that being said, blackouts are a definite sign of a serious problem with alcohol. I encourage you to think seriously about what your next step needs to be.
Best Wishes,

Hi Phoebe. Congratulations on your 3 AF days and your decision to re-evaluate the role of AL in your life. All it takes is one black out for something really horrible to happen. I'm glad to hear that some embarrassment at work, though unpleasant, is the worst thing that happened this time.
I've often heard it said that the test of a true alcohol problem is not in how often we drink, or how much we drink, but WHAT HAPPENS WHEN we drink. If you aren't sure what's going to happen if you drink (will you stop? Will you get trashed? Will you black out?), then it's better not to drink.
There is a wonderful freedom that I found once I finally put the idea of drinking behind me. I hope you find that freedom too.

Thank you all for your frank answers and your support which I knew that you would give......... I have been doing some research into blackouts and it would seem that I get en blocs which means a black out but you are still functioning carrying out conversations etc the articles that I have read all have one common denominator the only sure fire way to stop a black out is not to drink....................it is scaring the hell out me just now thinking that I will never be able to drink again but it is looking like I will be abstaining from al..........i know that abstaining will only have a positive effect on my life and those that I love its just alot to 'get your head around'......... the comfort is that I know I have found a community who understands and thank you again for your thoughts :h

Hi Phoebe. The idea of never drinking again can be very daunting initially. I found this phrase to be helpful:
I can drink whenever I want. I can never drink safely again.
Strength and hope to you. Life WILL get better when you get the russian roullette of AL off your back.

For me, that removes my mental rebellion from the thinking.

Result is to chose to take out the risky element.
I took blackouts to mean 'functioning' i.e. not knocked-out. Most of mine were like that although often I'd have tunnel-vision recall of the situations.
They are however very dangerous, firstly they put your safety in danger (I am so lucky never to have been attacked or assualted in blackout) as well as that of other people.
Be nice and make the right choice.
