Advice on Campral
Advice on Campral
Welcome McKenize,
I have tried Campral, but it has some embarrassing and unpleasant gastrointestinal side effects. Campral did nothing for me and I wouldn't waste your money on it. Like you, I have gained 40 plus pounds because of my drinking the last 3 1/2 years.
I have had wonderful luck on Naltrexone (Revia) which is a strong anti-craving medication. My drinking went from 1-5 glasses of wine per night (or hard liquor of 1-4 shots) to 1 glass per night and now I am AF. You can get NAL at one of several online pharmacies: River, Alldaychemist, 4Rx, and Goldpharma.
You have taken the most important first step. We are all here for you and I wish you good luck in your journey,
Rusty

Advice on Campral
If you drink whilst on Campral it simply will not work - you have to stop otherwise may as well flush them down the toilet.
I've tried it and since I hadn't gotten my head around not drinking and wasn't prepared to change my outlook it didn't work. It's no magic pill it has to come from within.

Advice on Campral
I took it for 6 months and it helped me a lot. Mostly, it showed me that I can be AF and be ok.
HOWEVER it sounds like you need a detox plan first. Going AF after drinking 12 beers a day may create some discomfort for you, so you may think about preparing yourself.
True, if you drink on it it's positive effects are diminished, but on balance I am glad I took it for a while.AF since May 6, 2010
Forget the past, plan for tomorrow, and live for today.

but I asure you, you are not acting normal..
I've been there done it, and got a big Tshirt to prove it..
it cost me my son, coz I fell asleep for wot I thought was just a litle nap and could go pick him up from school when I woke..
I didn't ...
the social services did.. and I have been fighting like hell to get him back....
be very careful.. the schools are told to look out for signs of a drinking parent..
Gaia said it right..
get into detox..
and start from there.. do not just buy campral and think that will do the trick..
any anti craving drug will only work once you are clean and truly gonna start to get sober..
I use Baclofen, and it works for me.. plus L.Glut..
but my advice as Gaia said ..
get into detox and take it from there..
thats what I did
if your children are taken from you it is f'ing hard to get them back
plus the danger of drink driving, you could kill them and you and maybe others..
:l:l:l
p.s. my baby boy comes back in June.. but after 16 heartbreaking months apart..!!

Advice on Campral
Hi McKenzie,
I, too, was a 12 pack a day beer drinker. I also tried Campral for about a month. At first I thought it was really working (or I wanted to believe it was), but eventually I started drinking on it because my desire to drink was stronger than any pill. I am now on Antabuse, and I have to say it's the best thing I've done. It does not take away cravings, but it uses more of a "scare tactic" to get you to stop. I can happily say that I am now 53 days AF because of this medication. Maybe you could ask your doctor about Antabuse? I do have to say, please pay close attention to the warnings and directions for Antabuse, you do not want to mix alcohol with this drug EVER as it causes severe side effects. Please take care and let us know how you're getting along.
xoxo

Believe in yourself. You are stronger than you think.

Advice on Campral
I was like k-9. I tried Campral several yrs ago. Thought it was working (it was the thought process of "yes-I can do it & it's working a miracle"). But i decided to have a beer that led to another and well you know where that road leads to. It's not a miracle drug. I had no luck with it.
I had better luck with Topamax.:notes:
