I couldn't sleep at all last night

Yesterday was first day AF in about a year. I knew I'd have trouble sleepeing, but SERIOUSLY, I'm not sure if I got even 2 or 3 hours of sleep. It'll get better, I know.

Anyone know, does L-Glut or Kudzu cause tiredness or the opposite? Don't want to take anything close to bedtime that will prevent sleep. I have Melatonin, too.

Glad I've had day 1, looking forward to day 2, great not to be HO.

    Hi sassy,
I dont take any meds but I suffered from serious imsonia the first few weeks. I hardly slept at all.
Now I am just knackered all the time. You cant win!

      Hey Sassy,

Unfortunately, insomnia's pretty common when you first stop drinking, and a real drag. I can tell you after a few days, you'll likely be sleeping better than you have in years, depending on how long you've been overdoing it.

I use self-hypnosis tapes at bedtime and they help a lot. I looked around online and found a couple I like. (Some can irritate the heck out of you!).

Congratulations on a successful Day 1. :goodjob: If you feel overwhelmed by sleeplessness, read the thread below. Insomnia's got nothin' on the train wreck of alcohol dependence!

SO well done on day 1 Sassy - Melatonin helped me get to sleep, but I did wake through the night - those first few days/that first week can be really hard - your body is so used to having AL to help you sleep - although they say that Al actually causes restless sleep - but maybe you could try an antihistamine - I only have to LOOK at those and am asleep! Well done though - you are doing really well!

          Hugs to you, Sun xx

I hardly slept for the first few weeks too. Basically you have been overloading your system with a sedative, remove and your nervous system will rebound in a serious manner. I looked at it as something to get through, another thing to put me off drinking again. I would recommend camomile tea though, and you can get used to the taste eventually. Be careful about relying on other meds as you can become dependent on them, even if it's only psychologically.

              Hi Sassy!
I use Melatonin from time to time because it is natural and is something our body produces anyway, so taking a small amount just kind of convinces your body that yes, it is time to go to sleep! I have a couple of relaxation tapes I listen to sometimes (but as someone else mentioned, choose carefully because some of them can be annoying!). Usually just a nice dark room and the sound of a ticking clock does it for me. Maybe you could try some bedtime tea, and a nice hot bath just before bed? If all else fails, try reading a really boring technical book. j/k
              Good luck to you!

By the way, I also found mind-numbing soaps to help a lot too!

                  Hi Sassy,
I started AF the same day as you - well done to you! I am waiting for a lot of my vits/supps to arrive so I am only taking Kudzu, Primrose Oil, Milk Thistle & Magnesium at the moment. I didn't sleep too badly (not brilliant) last night so one or all may be helping? I think it may also be our bodies getting used to actually falling asleep as opposed to slipping into an alcohol induced slumber. Plus the body is probably working overtime trying to get all the cr*p out of it that we have put in for so long (well I certainly have been doing anyway!!). Good luck, keep strong this will repay us a 100 fold!

Well it is 3.11am here and I have to be up by seven, and I am still wide awake. I have tried literally everything. It is driving me crazy. So I know how you feel. It sucks!

                      Welcome Sassy,

You?ve had some good advice so far, I?m on day 21 and still not sleeping through the night but everyone?s different. When I was drinking towards the end I was awake every night with sweats, anxiety, racing mind and I?d be awake 3 or 4 times and was exhausted every morning. My sleeping has got better and now I wake a couple of times but just roll over and fall back asleep quite quickly and I feel fresh when I get up. During my fist few days I managed to get a couple of days off work and combined them with a weekend and slept through the day to catch up. I take L-glut and Kudzu three times a day and don't feel they have any impact on tiredness.

Hang in there it does get better.

                      Dewdrop :h
Enjoy today - there will be no other one quite like it....

                        Hi Sassy

I thought that was me when I read your post, I am a walking zombie during the day due to so little sleep, however it can not take away the greatest feeling of not being hungover at work everyday!

It will get easier well done and keep up the good work.

I use promethazie or doxylamte all the time. (Phenergan and Somnil in SA). Not like everynight. AL used to stop me sleeping, unless I drank a lot, but six beers could not keep asleep after 2pm.

Don't fek around with sleep - If all else fails use a chemical. I find one night's good sleep encourages another one. Before long you'll have a 3/4 full bottle of sleepig pills unused, in the cupboard, just for emergencies.
