    Starting over

Here I am back again, starting over day 1. I made it a week AF a few weeks back and then started again. What is wrong with me? I feel like such a failure.

I had posted about how I was worried about my liver. I have to go to the dr in 2 weeks for a physical. I have to have blood work done and I'm so scared that my liver enzymes will show bad damage. My doctor has know about my drinking since last August. I went to him in Febuary and admitted I had started drinking again. He put me on Antabuse. I had to stop taking it because of side effects.

I wonder if my doctor will fire me for drinking again? I am so ashamed.

I really want sobriety now. I must stay sober to stay alive.

I have 2 weeks until my appointment. Hopefully my liver will be cleaned up at least a little by then. I am taking Milk Thistle and drinking lots of water.

Does anyone know if liver ezymes can go down in 2 weeks? Not necessarily to normal, but just slightly out of range?

    Thanks again

    Hi Laura,

Unfortunately I can't answer your question about your liver results - that will entirely depend on how much you drink and for how long. You are doing the right thing with drinking lots of water and taking milk thistle. Try adding fresh lemon juice to your water to help cleanse the liver even more. There are also foods you can eat to help - liver, yellwfin tuna and brocolli rabe off the top of my head - google for more.

Sorry to not be of more help - I hope your liver is mending well, but really it's not about the short-term results. Although I understand why you want good results now it's really over the longer term that matters.

Depending on how your liver function was previously, two weeks AF should make a big improvement in most of your liver enzymes. (GGT can take longer, but it's not always tested.) Your doc isn't going to 'fire' you if he/she believes you're trying to get control of your problem and making a genuine effort to remain sober. Take a breath, relax, and give yourself credit for taking this step to a healthier life.

        Hi Laura,

I can understand your anxiety and Kimberly is right....this is about the long-term battle and your sobriety. On the short-term, I am speaking from my own experience...my liver enzymes were abnormal because I was binge drinking a few years back and went on a binge the night before the blood work was done. So that explains the elevated levels. But but the next time I went to see my doctor just a few months later, I was AF for a week and my enzymes were fine. Like Red said, the results depend on how long you've been drinking and how much....every day, hard liquor, etc. Your AF time will definitely help and drink ALL the water you can with fresh lemon in it as its an antioxidant. Good luck, keep posting and let us know how we can help.
