Not sure if today was a step forward or back...7 days sober....worked a long shift and its very hot where I am at. Went to the pub, got A beer, went home, made dinner and some hot tea, and am going to go to bed shortly. Not happy I drank but the way I handled myself and the cravings aren't eating at me. Maybe I am just overthinking.
Say, Mr. Fields, I read in the paper where you consumed two quarts of liquor a day. What would your father think about that?
        WC: He'd think I was a sissy.

i often think of you pw, funnily enough, maybe perhaps because of your amazing quandry of being who you are professionally & dealing with the problem you (& all of us) have.
              i really admire you.
your dedication, your realism, your honesty.
i'd like to have a coffee with you one day.
              good luck.

Give it a go, there is a lot of wisdom in the rooms.

                    PW,

I don't know if this book will help you, but it did a lot for me as it pertains to AA. I could never quite make the higher power leap, so I didn't give AA a chance. But, statistically, people who can believe in a HP seem to have better odds at beating addiction.

This book takes AA concepts and relates them to a secular kind of definition. If you have trouble with AA, you might try the book. I think AA would be worth it just for the company of others who are struggling. Also, going through their steps seems to work - there are usually underlying issues with addiction.

Anyway, if you're so inclined.............the book is called:

Waiting by Marya Hornbacher - you can get it through Amazon.

Very interesting Unwasted. I could never embrace the higher power thing either. Sounds like an intriguing book!

                        Hi, PW.

Good for you for doing the detox. Was there also some rehab involved? Did they bring in speakers from AA? Maybe you could just try one meeting and connest with somebody. I haven't been going faithfully, due to work and also dealing with trying to get my license back, which is frustrating!! I am going to order this book, too.

Have you gotten the CDs? I try to listen to a couple of them, and need to start listening to the first two (Clearing and Hypnotic) again.

Did your work give you the time off for detox? Are you going back?

Keep posting so we know how you are doing.

Unwasted, thanks for mentioning that book. I had issues too with the whole HP thing and therefore thought "AA is NOT for me!" without ever trying it. Well, I also had issues with the idea of not drinking, but that would be nitpicking, right? :H

Anyway...I finally did go to AA and I'm glad I did. You are so right that the fellowship with others "just like me" is very valuable. It was a great way to make some new sober friends and also just feel "understood" in a face to face setting. That was enough for me at first! I have since figured out my own understanding of a higher power, and have worked through the steps. They have really helped me find my footing as a sober person, and also helped me deal with a lot of regrets and remorse from my past.

I think I will order that book! Many people struggle with that issue and I hate to think of people not getting the help that is right there due to fear about HP issues.

Doggygirl, you should definitely get the book. If you're in AA, you could help a lot of people once you read it and share some of the information. I am totally intrigued with the author; her story is amazing. She's a talented writer who struggled with a long-time eating disorder and alcohol addiction. You just wouldn't believe what she's been through and overcome. The book has really helped me.

Another that is doing me a lot of good is called 12 Smart Things to Do When the Booze and Drugs are Gone by Allen Berger. The information on emotional sobriety is helping me understand how sobriety goes beyond just quitting drinking (similar I'm sure to working the Steps in AA)..........Valuable stuff!
